Abstract

This study provides a psychoanalytic exploration of Alexandra Oliva’s novel The Last One (2016), examining the protagonist Zoo’s psychological endurance through a global pandemic. By utilizing a qualitative symptomatic reading of the text, the research investigates how Zoo maintains her equilibrium by adhering to the "Symbolic Order" of a reality television show even as the "Real" foundations of civilization collapse. Central to this analysis is the mechanism of fetishistic disavowal, expressed through the formula "I know very well, but nevertheless," which allows the protagonist to reframe catastrophic evidence—such as corpses and societal decay—as elaborate production "props" and scripted "challenges" (Žižek, 1997; Oliva, 2016).The findings reveal that Zoo’s survival is predicated on an "internalized gaze" and a persistent performance for an imagined audience, illustrating the profound power of mediated narratives over visceral reality (Lacan, 1978). However, the study also identifies the "Abject" as the ultimate point of psychological failure, where maternal anxiety and sensory intimacy finally pierce her symbolic shield (Kristeva, 1982). Ultimately, this article argues that The Last One serves as a haunting allegory for a hyperreal culture, demonstrating that the human psyche may prioritize a constructed "Script" to defer the trauma of the unassimilable Real.

Abstract

This study explains the representation of the id, ego, and superego in selected poems by Sylvia Plath through a literary psychology approach, particularly based on Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory. The purpose of this study is to describe how Plath's inner conflict and psychological turmoil are reflected in her poems, as well as to reveal the messages conveyed through the representation of the id, ego, and superego in the selected poems of Sylvia Plath. The researcher uses a descriptive qualitative method by selecting three poems from The Collected Poems anthology, edited by Ted Hughes: "Dialogue Between a Ghost and a Priest," "Fiesta Melons," and "Mushrooms". The analysis focuses To identifying and describe textual elements that represent the id (instinct and desire), ego (reality and reason), and superego (moral judgment and conscience). The research findings show that the id appears most dominantly in Plath's poems with (11) data, reflecting raw emotions, personal longing, and unresolved trauma. The ego is reflected through rational responses and internal conflicts with (6) data, while the superego appears less frequently with (2) data, primarily related to moral reflection and feelings of guilt. These findings indicate that the selected poems of Sylvia Plath are heavily influenced by her psychological condition, and her poetry serves as a medium for emotional expression shaped by subconscious urges.

Abstract

This study presents a biocultural analysis of Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express (1934) through the theoretical lens of Literary Darwinism. While traditional scholarship often focuses on the novel’s formalist "puzzle-box" structure, this research explores the underlying evolutionary pressures that drive its unconventional resolution. By utilizing key concepts such as inclusive fitness, altruistic punishment, and reciprocal altruism, the article argues that the narrative functions as a cognitive simulation of ancestral justice. The findings reveal that the "Armstrong Circle" operates as a surrogate kinship unit responding to a catastrophic fitness insult—the murder of a child. The collective execution of the predator, Cassetti, is analyzed as a biological correction triggered by an evolved punitive sentiment when formal legal structures fail. Furthermore, the study interprets Hercule Poirot’s final acquittal of the killers as a biocultural compromise, where the detective’s "modular mind" recognizes the validity of proximal biological imperatives over distal social laws. Ultimately, this research suggests that the novel’s enduring global popularity stems from its profound alignment with the fundamental evolutionary heritage and moral intuitions of the human species. Keywords: literary darwinism, inclusive fitness, altruistic punishment, biocultural compromise, cheater detection, fictive kinsh

Abstract

This article examines the status negotiation of the orphan in late Victorian Canadian literature through a postcolonial and settler-colonial lens. The primary objective is to analyze the transformation of the protagonist, Anne Shirley, from a marginalized Street Arab to an enfranchised Scholar, illustrating how this trajectory mirrors the consolidation of the British-Canadian settler state.  The methodology employs a qualitative literary analysis of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables (1908), utilizing close-reading techniques and coding for themes such as linguistic re-colonization, domestic discipline, and academic meritocracy. The study specifically maps the racialized and classed anxieties of the era by tracing the shift from Anne’s initial classification as a manual labor unit to her recognition as an intellectual vanguard. Main outcomes and results reveal that settler belonging is achieved through the systematic erasure of the original inhabitants of Prince Edward Island. Anne’s imagination serves as a colonial tool to rename the landscape and impose Eurocentric romantic ideals, while education functions as a primary mechanism for individual and professional recolonization. The conclusions indicate that the orphan heroine’s success is an affirmation of the settler’s radical underlying title to the land. Ultimately, the study demonstrates that achieving domestic and social belonging in Avonlea is contingent upon mastering the imperial canon and adopting a specific British-Protestant social sensibility.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the lexicons found in the Gending Gender Wayang in the Ngaben (Balinese cremation) ceremony in Taman Bali Village and to analyze the cultural meanings contained in each of these lexicons. This study employed a qualitative descriptive design with a naturalistic approach. The data were collected from three informants selected through purposive sampling. Data collection were conducted in Taman Bali Village, Bangli Subdistrict, Bangli Regency, Bali, through in-depth interviews and observation. The research instruments used included an interview guide, a smartphone, and a notebook. Based on the results of data collection and analysis, nineteen lexicons were identified in the Gending Gender Wayang during the ngaben ceremony in Taman Bali Village. These lexicons were classified into two types of gending: gending petegak and gending bebatelan. All the lexicons found contain cultural meanings reflected in five core values: the spiritual journey of the soul, spiritual protection, emotional transformation, spiritual purification, and cosmological balance. These findings indicate that the lexicons in Gending Gender Wayang serve not only as linguistic elements but also as representations of the cultural and spiritual values of Balinese society. This study emphasizes the importance of preserving the lexicon in Gending Gender Wayang as an effort to maintain local identity and ensure cultural sustainability in the midst of globalization. Furthermore, this study is expected to contribute to ethnolinguistic research, particularly in cross-cultural studies and efforts to preserve the Balinese language and culture.

Abstract

Abstract

This article examines the portrayal of motherhood in Jane Austen’s Persuasion (1817), focusing on the supporting character Mary Musgrove, who is depicted as a selfish and emotionally detached mother. The study aims to identify the factors that shape Mary’s selfishness and to explain how her childhood experiences influence her behavior as an adult and as a mother. This research applies Sigmund Freud’s theory of the dynamics of personality (id, ego, and superego) and Nancy Chodorow’s concept of the reproduction of mothering, as outlined in The Reproduction of Mothering: Psychoanalysis and the Sociology of Gender (1978). A qualitative method was used, with Persuasion as the primary data source and relevant journal articles and books as secondary data; the analysis was carried out through close reading, thematic analysis, and interpretation, then presented descriptively. The findings show that Mary’s selfishness stems from an imbalance between her id, ego, and superego, in which her id-driven need for attention dominates while her superego fails to instill a sense of maternal obligation. Five interrelated factors are identified as contributing to her selfish mothering: the effects of early mothering, the mothering relation and self-identity, maternal ambivalence and emotional influence, social and psychological expectations of mothering, and unresolved preoedipal conflicts. These factors, rooted in Mary’s own emotionally unavailable upbringing, in turn affect her sons’ emotional security, trust, and long-term capacity for healthy attachment

Abstract

This research aims to identify the lexicons used in the Gebug Ende ritual in Seraya Village, Karangasem Regency, and to analyze the cultural meanings embedded in those lexicons. The study is based on the declining understanding of ritual lexicons among the younger generation of the Seraya community, which poses a challenge to the preservation of the Balinese language and local cultural heritage. This study employed an ethnographic approach. The data were collected through non-participant observation and in-depth interviews with Penglingsir (a respected senior figure), ritual practitioners, and Jero Pendalem (a traditional ritual custodian), selected through purposive sampling. The findings reveal that there are 37 lexicons used in the Gebug Ende ritual, categorized into four groups: 20 lexicons related to the ritual stages, 9 lexicons related to ritual tools, 4 lexicons related to ritual participants, and 4 lexicons related to ritual offerings. The identified lexicons represent the Seraya community's spiritual beliefs, cultural identity, local wisdom, and the values of harmony among humans, nature, and the divine. In conclusion, documenting and understanding the lexicons used in the Gebug Ende ritual plays a significant role in preserving the Balinese language, strengthening cultural identity, and supporting the continuity of this traditional ritual for future generations.
