Abstract

This study aims to see the effect of coaching, supervision and actions given by Banda Aceh junior high school canteen managers on the hygiene and sanitation of the school canteen. A canteen with a low hygiene standard in its physical condition, its raw material for food, food processing and food presentation, can give negative impacts on a child’s health, growth, cognitive development, and nutritional status, which will eventually affect their academic achievement. This research, conducted from 2 to 5th of August 2017, is an analytical survey research with a cross-sectional design. Based on the results of statistical tests using chi-square technique, a positive and significant correlation was found between the canteen manager’s coaching and the canteen’s hygiene and sanitation (p-value = 0.001 0.05), particularly between the supervision, hygiene and sanitation variables (p-value = 0.001 0.05). There is also a strong and significant relationship between the level of canteen maintenance and the canteen’s hygiene and sanitation (p-value = 0.002 0.05). The canteen staff are reported to have complied with the applicable regulations and applied the knowledge they have about the standard hygiene and sanitation. They reported that they regularly maintain personal hygiene when processing the food by washing their hands and keep their work equipment clean. Besides, they maintain the cleanliness of the canteens by throwing waste into the dumping area when the bin is full, and by keeping food and kitchen wares clean. Keywords: Hygiene, Sanitation, Canteen

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate Indonesian students’ self-confidence in learning as one solution for the government to improve Indonesian students’ learning outcomes. The research focused on Math because the evaluation result from Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) showed that Indonesia was in the 39th position in the world in 2007 for Math Excellence, indicating that more effort needs to be made to improve it. The government has approached this issue by improving the education quality and infrastructure; however, it is also necessary to view it from the psychological perspective, particularly from the students’ self-confidence in learning. This research was qualitative research. It used TIMSS data analyzed with Latent Class Analysis. The research sample was 4403 students of grade eight from 149 Indonesian schools. The findings showed that there are three categories of students’ self-confidence: 1) strong self-confidence (25%), 2) moderate self-confidence (55%), and 3) low self-confidence (20%). Due to a high number of students with a moderate and low level of self-confidence, it is thus advised that the government adopts the psychological approach in education, improve the competencies of teachers and supervisors, and improve teaching and learning methodologies in addition to improving infrastructure so that students’ self-confidence in learning can be increased, and the desired learning outcomes can be achieved. Despite focusing on Math, the findings of this study are also applicable to other subjects. Keywords:  Self-confidence, Self-efficacy, Latent Class Analysis.

Abstract

This study aims to describe how the role of parents in strengthening the character of honesty when learning at home during the Covid-19 pandemic. To achieve this goal, a qualitative research approach was used with a case study research design. The research subjects are 3 parents lived in Gedang Kulut Village, Cerme District, Gresik Regency. The instruments used to collect data in this study were observation and in-depth interviews. The data were analyzed using an interactive analysis model proposed by Miles and Huberman. The results of the data analysis show that the strengthening of the character of honesty when learning at home is still weak. This can be seen from the behavior of children who are still not honest to their teachers when working on assignments, midterm tests and final exams. The low character of honesty possessed by children is caused by a lack of independent character and still relying on their parents to do the schoolwork. Character strengthening was carried out by parents to their children by providing exemplary, motivation and punishment. Exemplary is given to children by providing examples of good character, motivation is carried out by providing examples of positive behavior when the child does not have an enthusiasm for learning and wants to do a dishonest behavior. Lastly, the punishment is given when the child cannot behave honestly to their parents, teachers, and themselves. Indirectly, the three strategies of honesty character strengthening certainly have a profound impact on the child's growth process while learning at home in the Covid-19 pandemic. Keywords: Role of Parents, Honesty, Covid-19.

Abstract

This paper aimed to identify: 1) the participant’s ability or disability to implement and utilize what they had learned, and 2) the participants’ financial behavioral changes and attitude changes towards managing money. Using the convenience sampling method, thirty attendees of the managing-money training project were selected to participate in Focus Group Discussions (FGDs). The interview questions were based on the OECD/INFE questionnaire of adult financial literacy. From the FGDs, it was found that most participants mainly relied on agricultural business, labor work, or private micro or small businesses. The FGDs also revealed that the participants had a general understanding of the basic financial knowledge, the implementation of income and expense tracking, budgeting as well as savings. Doing a family account was reported to be a new activity among the participants’ families. Children’s behaviors on expenses and irregular income streams were also found to be the major causes of their financial pressure. Developing the ability to balance income and expenses can be one solution for them to live without debt. However, some of the participants said that they did not have financial goals and would rather live for today than plan for tomorrow. Keywords: finance, saving-behaviors, money-management
