Focus and Scope The Indonesian Landscape Journal (JLI) is a periodical scientific publication of Department of Landscape Architecture, Faculty of Agriculture, IPB University and the Indonesian Institute of Landscape Architects (IALI) with the purpose for enhancing conceptual, scientific understanding and application to develop a sustainable landscape as a solution to landscape change. Various disciplines and perspectives are needed to understand the landscape and harmonize social and ecological values to ensure the sustainability of the landscape. This journal has been published 6 Volume, starting from 2009. One volume of publication consists of two numbers: the edition of April and October each year. We invite researchers, academics and practitioners in the field of Landscape Architecture and other fields related to the science and profession of Landscape Architecture to submit articles in the form of academic research, thought, and academic reports including the following themes: • Planning, design, management, and landscape plants • Planning and development of urban and rural areas • Ecology and the environment • Ecological landscape engineering • Landscape history and culture

Abstract

Jakarta, as a rapidly growing megacity, faces persistent air pollution challenges, particularly along major pedestrian corridors. This study evaluates the ecological and social impacts of the revitalization of the Transit Oriented Development (TOD) pedestrian corridor from Blok M to the Bundaran Hotel Indonesia. Using Sentinel-2 satellite imagery (2018, 2020, 2022) and GIS analysis, changes in land cover were quantified, revealing a significant increase in green space from 49.9 ha in 2018 to 79 ha in 2020, followed by a decline to 71.1 ha in 2022. Gravimetric analysis was applied to measure particle emissions deposition on selected plant species, showing that Bougainvillea glabra exhibited the highest average particle retention capacity (0.030 g/m²/day), while Tabebuia rosea and Spathodea campanulata had the lowest (0.002 g/m²/day). Traffic volume monitoring indicated a correlation between reduced vehicle counts and improved vegetation deposition efficiency. A public perception survey (n = 37) using a Likert scale revealed strong user preference for shaded seating, diverse flowering plants, and unobstructed visibility for safety. The findings highlight the need for species selection that combines high ecological performance with public landscape aesthetic preferences. Strategic integration of high-retention, visually appealing vegetation into pedestrian landscapes, policy reinforcement for green space expansion, and participatory design approaches is needed to enhance the corridor’s landscape quality and user comfortability.

Abstract

Wologai Traditional Village in Ende Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, represents a living cultural landscape of the Lio indigenous people, reflecting a regenerative relationship between humans, nature, and ancestral spirits. The village’s spatial structure is oriented around local cosmology and deeply embedded with strong social and spiritual values. This study aims to analyze the Wologai traditional settlement model based on local cultural wisdom. The methodology includes literature review to identify natural and man-made landscape elements, interviews with Mosalaki (traditional leaders) and village heads regarding socio-cultural aspects, and direct observation of the traditional spatial structure. The findings show that the Mountain, Keda, and Kanga function as cosmological centers that shape the spatial organization and social relations of the community. The clustered and hierarchical settlement pattern reflects the integration of humans, nature, and ancestors, and serves as a symbol of spiritual and social sustainability. This study recommends the preservation of traditional spatial patterns and the strengthening of the roles of village governments and customary communities. The findings are expected to serve as a reference for the development and preservation of Wologai Traditional Village as a living and dynamic cultural heritage.

Abstract

The rapid growth of vertical housing in East Jakarta presents significant challenges in providing adequate private Green Open Space (GOS). This study aims to develop planning strategies for GOS in Rusunawa Jatinegara Barat and Rusunami Samawa Pondok Kelapa by analyzing existing site conditions, oxygen requirements, water supply potential, microclimate conditions, and residents’ perceptions. Data were collected through site observations, structured questionnaires distributed to 100 respondents using the Slovin formula, in-depth interviews, and document reviews. The analysis indicates that the oxygen demand, estimated at 0.864 kg/person/day, is far from being met; the existing vegetation only contributes about 9–10% of the total need, with daily oxygen production reaching approximately 2,714.97 kg/day in Rusunami Samawa Pondok Kelapa and 2,413.6 kg/day in Rusunawa Jatinegara Barat. The calculated GOS requirement for clean water recharge highlights an ideal green space area of around 16.95 ha for Rusunawa Jatinegara Barat and 73.91 ha for Rusunami Samawa Pondok Kelapa. The Temperature Humidity Index (THI) analysis shows an index score exceeding 27, indicating thermal discomfort due to the lack of adequate shading vegetation. The recommended planning strategies focus on optimizing the site’s green design by increasing the proportion of wide-canopy trees, dense shrubs, and ground covers, as well as implementing integrated rainwater harvesting systems, biopores, and green corridors to enhance natural cross-ventilation. This study emphasizes the importance of participatory approaches and policy integration into local RTRW/RDTR frameworks to ensure the sustainability of private green open spaces in vertical housing developments.

Abstract

The melukat tradition is a purification ceremony for the soul and body, with water as the primary medium. Currently, the melukat tradition has become a trend as a self-healing experience, leading to an increase in visits. This has the potential to diminish the sanctity of the penglukatan cultural landscape. This study aims to map the locations of the penglukatan cultural landscape, identify the characteristics of the cultural landscape, and analyse supporting factors from biophysical, socio-cultural, economic, and legal aspects. Additionally, this study provides recommendations for sustainable tourism development using the SWOT method. The qualitative research methods employed include interviews, field observations, and literature studies. Nine penglukatan sites were identified, categorized based on management by traditional villages and individuals. The identification using 11 cultural landscape elements shows that all locations share similarities, such as the Tri Mandala spatial concept. The supporting factors from biophysical, socio-cultural, economic, and legal aspects are crucial for the development of the cultural landscape, enabling the formation of new penglukatan sites in the Tukad Penet Watershed. The strategic development recommendations for achieving sustainable tourism include the provision of healing spaces with disaster-resistant architecture, data-driven development, and community involvement in enforcing customary regulations with strict sanctions.
