Abstract

Architects, interior designers, and contractors are key professionals in the construction industry who play a vital role in Indonesia's development. In the design process, designers must consider a wide range of building materials and furniture options, which are constantly evolving. Design District facilities serve as a platform for construction industry players to select appropriate materials based on their specific needs and preferences. One notable example is the Indonesia Design District (IDD), one of the country's largest design and lifestyle expo centers, spanning 12.1 hectares. It features a shopping center that acts as a primary destination for design inspiration and high-quality materials. The Borneo Design District is an innovative initiative aimed at responding to shifts in architectural design and form. It focuses on becoming a central hub for finishing materials and home furnishings, with the goal of consolidating building design needs within a single, integrated area. The project also seeks to enhance the potential of local materials in West Kalimantan. The design approach follows R. Whittaker's five-step method, which includes the stages of introduction, definition, preparation, analysis and synthesis, and evaluation. The outcome of this process is the Borneo Design District building design, developed under the Mixed-Use District theme and incorporating a Contemporary Architectural approach. This includes sustainable design, the use of innovative materials, and an emphasis on user experience. This serves as a solution to the challenge of attracting visitors to shop, enjoy recreational activities, work, and collaborate.

Abstract

Plantations, agriculture, and livestock farming are the main sources of raw materials that will be processed into food to meet basic human needs at all times. Aligned with the development of technology and knowledge in producing and developing these foodstuffs, architectural objects are needed as facilities to increase community potential and opportunities through innovative learning, applied research in the agricultural industry, sustainable plantations, as well as creating economic, educational, and cultural engagement activities, as well social issues related to food and agriculture. The Kubu Raya Agriculture Learning Center can act as one of the supporting institutions for improving the quality of agriculture in Kubu Raya. The design process of the Kubu Raya Agriculture Learning Center involves several stages, starting with collecting primary and secondary data through case studies, analysis, concept synthesis, and pre-planning. Through a Sustainable Architecture design approach that considers aspects of safety, comfort, health, and aesthetic and adapts its function, the Kubu Raya Agriculture Learning Center building is divided into seven radial masses, creating a mass division according to the building's main function, such as education, management and service, and support. In addition, the Sustainable Architecture design approach is presented through building orientation, window placement in areas that require a lot of light and air, building facades with local ornaments, roof design, utilization of vegetation as a natural buffer, and the presence of electricity reserves can optimize the function of the building.

Abstract

A retreat is an activity that involves withdrawing from daily routines to a quiet and safe place, where one can deepen one's spirituality and gain a better understanding of oneself, others, and God. In the Catholic tradition, retreats play an important role in nurturing faith through prayer, reflection, and discussion. However, the retreat facilities in the Archdiocese of Pontianak are not commensurate with the growing number of Catholics. Out of a total of approximately 738,000 Catholics, only 14 retreat houses are available. As a result, most retreat activities are conducted in places not specifically designed for such purposes, thereby diminishing the quality of the spiritual experience. The objective of this design project is to create a retreat area with facilities that can support and accommodate the spiritual activities of Catholics in the Archdiocese of Pontianak. The design method follows R. Whitaker's eight-step process, including problem identification, needs analysis, concept synthesis, and design evaluation. The approach used is a functional approach, involving analysis of space, users, activities, and inter-space relationships. The design resulted in eight building masses, with the chapel as the central structure, surrounded by participant accommodation facilities, a convent house, staff quarters, a dining hall, an educational area, and an open communal space. Vegetation was incorporated into the design as both a natural buffer and an element that enhances the cooling and aesthetic appeal of the area.

Abstract

The lifestyle changes of urban communities in the modern era are shaped by technological advancements, globalization, and the daily use of social media. These factors have created new tendencies in public activities, particularly among Generation Z and millennials, driving greater interest in culinary, fashion, sports, and recreational activities. Such trends demand urban spaces that are not only functional but also capable of offering meaningful social experiences as a new spatial concept in the city. In major Indonesian cities, this demand is addressed through lifestyle centers"”integrated areas combining retail, culinary, recreation, and open public spaces. These facilities emphasize green open areas, pedestrian accessibility, and social interaction, offering a different experience from conventional shopping malls. As a developing city, Pontianak lacks facilities that comprehensively accommodate various lifestyle needs within a single, well-planned area. The Lifestyle Center design in Pontianak aims to fulfill this gap by providing integrated facilities for culinary, recreation, sports, and fashion. The design method applied refers to the five design steps by Snyder & Catanese, which consist of the initiation stage, preparation stage, analysis and synthesis stage, evaluation stage, and implementation stage. The outcome is a Lifestyle Center envisioned as an adaptive, inclusive, and representative urban hub, fostering both functional and experiential qualities that reflect the evolving lifestyle of Pontianak"™s urban community.

Abstract

Public services play a strategic role in supporting effective and accountable governance. However, the quality of public services in Indonesia still faces various challenges, such as low service standards, limited supporting facilities, and the absence of an integrated service hub. Melawi Regency, as a relatively new autonomous region in West Kalimantan Province, also experiences similar conditions, where no integrated service center is yet available despite the increasing demand for public services. This situation has led to low public satisfaction with basic services and decreased bureaucratic efficiency. To address these challenges, the Melawi Regency Government has planned the development of a Public Service Mall (Mal Pelayanan Publik/MPP) as a solution to integrate cross-sectoral services within a single complex. The design process of the MPP was carried out through a rational approach that includes needs analysis, policy studies, and space program formulation based on the principles of integration and efficiency. The design concept emphasizes accessibility, social interaction, connectivity, and user comfort as the main criteria of the placemaking approach, while also considering local identity by adopting the traditional architectural form of the Dayak’s Rumah Betang. The implementation of this MPP is in line with national policy directions on public service reform based on community needs and the principles of good governance, and it is expected to improve service quality, accelerate bureaucratic processes, and strengthen public trust in local government.

Abstract

Singkawang City is a city located in West Kalimantan Province, known for its significant population of ethnic Chinese residents, making it one of the largest ethnic Chinese communities in Indonesia. Cultural heritage from the ethnic Chinese community is easily found in Singkawang City, ranging from traditions, cuisine, to buildings with a distinct Chinese flair. This has led to Singkawang City joining the Indonesian Heritage Cities Network (JKPI), prompting the Singkawang City Government to begin planning areas that can be used to preserve Chinese cultural heritage. The planning of Chinese cultural areas in Singkawang City is a solution to existing issues. The existence of this design is intended to develop and preserve the existing Chinese cultural heritage in the urban area. The design method used is J.C. Jones' (1989) design method, which consists of ideas, information, analysis, synthesis, evaluation, and optimization. The design of this cultural center area will utilize the concept of a living museum. The results of the design will be divided into three spatial hierarchies: main spaces (traditional Chinese houses, performance buildings, thematic pedestrian paths), supporting spaces (public and green open spaces, informal economic zones, temporary festival zones), and complementary spaces (art and cultural installations, cultural facades for buildings, city parking, river bridges, public toilets). This design is realized by integrating existing cultural heritage into the area in accordance with the current physical conditions of the site, thereby creating an area that can interpret Chinese cultural values within it.

Abstract

Singkawang is a city in West Kalimantan known as the “City of Tourism,” enriched by the arts, culture, and traditions of three major ethnic groups: Chinese, Dayak, and Malay. This diversity serves as an essential foundation for developing public spaces that accommodate various community activities while strengthening social interaction. One of the most strategic public spaces is the city park, which functions not only as a recreational area but also as a hub for social, cultural, educational, and environmental activities. The redesign of Cahaya Madani Gayung Bersambut Park is carried out to address the limited availability of public spaces in Singkawang. The park is envisioned as a facility that can accommodate recreational activities, art performances, exhibitions, as well as environmental and cultural education. Beyond enhancing the city’s visual appeal, the park is also expected to maintain ecological balance and serve as a learning space for visitors. The aim of this proposed design is to redevelop Cahaya Madani Park into a supporting facility that meets the needs of the community and cultural activities in Singkawang through stages of analysis, synthesis, evaluation, and iterative improvement. Located in a strategic area, the park is expected to become a new inclusive, multifunctional, and sustainable landmark that can be enjoyed by all segments of society and tourists.

Abstract

The surging number of pet ownerships has mirrored the trajectory of the growth of human population, ultimately contributing to the commercialization of pets. Practices carried by breeders or pet shops often neglect animal welfare. The lack of public education and awareness about pet ownership"™s responsibilities eventually has led to higher abandonment rates of animals, particularly for cats and dogs frequently found roaming unsupervised in urban environments. Moreover, ineffective animal population control policies, combined with limited shelter capacity and operational constraints, further exacerbate the issue of stray animal overpopulation. In Pontianak City, there is currently no adequate and integrated animal shelter facility. Therefore, this design aims to provide a space that not only houses stray animals, but also cares for, trains, educates, and provides a means of interaction between animals and humans. The design method applied refers to Snyder & Catanese's 5 design steps, which include the initiation, preparation, proposal submission, evaluation stages, and action.. The design approach applied focuses on accommodating the natural behaviour of animals with the theme of Freedom & Engage, which is translated into the building's form, circulation, and functions. The design outcome is an animal shelter facility which relevanst to current challenges and needs in field.

Abstract

Vocational High School (SMK) is a secondary education level in formal education in Indonesia after graduating from Junior High School (SMP). Data from the Central Statistics Agency states that Pontianak Tenggara District does not yet have a State Vocational High School. The design of the Vocational High School is an effort to increase the distribution of public service facilities. The planned State Vocational High School will have a concentration in business and management because Pontianak City has economic potentialsa, namely in the trade sector. The designer's goal is to produce plans and designs for educational facilities at the State Vocational High School (SMKN) level in Pontianak Tenggara District. The methods applied in this design include the idea stage, data collection stage, analysis stage, synthesis stage, and design stage. The results of the State Vocational High School building plan have a typical three-story building type with 18 classrooms and a practice room with a linear pattern and has a building area of 4,584 m². The building consists of two masses, namely the building mass with educational functions and supporting functions. The concept applied in the building is form follows function with a functional approach, where this concept is able to provide building functions according to needs.
