Abstract

On February 2, 2021, flooding struck Jombang, damaging 38 houses and public facilities due to heavy rainfall from cumulonimbus clouds. The analysis of convective cloud development using Himawari-8 Satellite with RGB Day Convective Storm, 24H-Microphysics, Airmass, and Cloud Convective Overlay methods revealed that the microphysics phase occurred in two different phases on February 1 and 2. The peak temperature of the Cb cloud during the development phase ranged from -20 to -60°C. Convective cloud clusters originated from the Java Sea and the Southern Sea. The peak cloud formation occurred at 12:00 UTC on February 1 and 2. Increased updraft and thickness intensity strengthened convective cloud formation. During the decay phase, downdraft increased with a decrease in cloud distribution, as observed in the Day Convective Storm and 24H-Microphysics images.

Abstract

Indonesia is the largest archipelagic country in the world so it receives large amounts of energy from solar radiation which makes it the most active convective region in the world. In December and January, DKI Jakarta tends to experience the rainy season. On January 1 2023, BMKG gave an early warning that it would rain in Jakarta. Reporting from several news reports, in the new year 2023, Jakarta was hit by heavy rain. Cloud phase analysis is needed to determine the potential for rain. This research identifies cloud phases using Himawari-9 satellite image data which is then processed using the Cloud Convective Overlays (CCO) method and the Red Green Blue (RGB) method. The CCO method can identify the distribution of cumulonimbus clouds and the RGB method can determine the flow of air masses, the type of air mass (Airmass), identify cloud phase, and the presence of high clouds containing ice (Day Convective Storm, Day Natural Color, and Cloud Phase Distinction ). The data used are bands 3 (0.6 µm), 5 (1.6 µm), 7 (3.7 µm), 8 (6.2 µm), 10 (7.3 µm), 12 (9.6 µm), 13 (10 .4 µm), and 15 (12.4 µm) at 7.00, 8.00, 9.00, 10.00, 11.00, 12.00, 13.00, and 14.00 WIB (GMT+7). The data was processed and visualized using Grid Analysis and Display System (GrADS) and GMSLPD SATAID software.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model in enhancing geography learning outcomes among students at SMA Negeri 1 Tombulu, using a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental design (One Group Pretest-Posttest). The sample was selected through purposive sampling from the population of class XI Social Studies. Data collection employed triangulated instruments: motivation questionnaires, grade documentation, and participatory observation. Descriptive analysis revealed a significant increase in mean scores from pretest (56.66) to posttest (80), with 83.33% of participants (5 students) achieving the Minimum Completeness Criteria (KKM) in the final phase, compared to none initially. These findings underscore the pivotal role of PBL in optimizing conceptual assimilation of global-local flora and fauna distribution through inquiry-based learning and collaborative group mechanisms. Pedagogically, the study recommends integrating PBL as an alternative strategy within geography curricula to strengthen cognitive and analytical skills.

Abstract

Seasonal transitions in Indonesia are typically accompanied by extreme weather phenomena, such as hail that occurred in the city of Palembang on November 4, 2023. The analysis of atmospheric conditions is intended to understand the dynamics of the atmosphere during the occurrence of the hailstorm phenomenon. The data used in this study include satellite imagery from Himawari-9 channels 8, 11, 13, 15, GSM data, ECMWF modelling data, and SST anomaly data. The research results indicate that anomalies in sea surface temperature and vertical convergence profiles, as well as relative humidity (RH), strengthen the potential for convective activity leading to extreme weather conditions. Based on Himawari-9 satellite imagery, the time series graph shows the lowest peak cloud temperature at around -80°C, with the Atmospheric Stability Index based on the GSM method indicating a labile atmospheric condition. Furthermore, using the RGB 24 Hour Microphysics and CCO methods, Cumulonimbus clouds were observed to begin growing at 07:20 UTC, entering the mature stage at 09:20 UTC, and starting to decay at 10:20 UTC.

Abstract

A heavy rain event that caused flooding hit several areas of Cilacap on April 28, 2022. This flood was triggered by high intensity rain that occurred since Thursday, April 27, 2023. The heavy rain caused the water discharge to overflow and inundate residents' homes. The phenomenon occurred around 17.00-23.30 WIB (10.00-17.30 UTC). This study aims to analyze the causes of extreme rain that occurred in Cilacap. The data used are surface air observation data, rainfall, satellite images, and Radiosonde observation results. The data that has been processed, then analyzed descriptively in terms of temporal and spatial. Surface air analysis conducted from three AWS locations shows conditions that support the occurrence of extreme rain. The highest rainfall measured was 321 mm/day at AWS Digi Cilacap, including the extreme category (>150 mm/day). Himawari-8 Satellite Image Analysis processed with Satellite Animation and Interactive Diagnosis (SATAID) software is used by looking at the temperature of the cloud tops. Based on the results of satellite image analysis, it shows the presence of Cumulonimbus convective clouds with a cloud top temperature value reaching -82.9°C. Local analysis using Radiosonde at Tunggul Meteorological Station indicates an unstable atmosphere that supports the formation of convective clouds as the cause of heavy rain events in the Cilacap region.

Abstract

Tegal city is located on the main transportation route of Central Java's pantura and has strong trade access. Due to its strategic location, the city's significant development led to an increase in built-up land. The growth of built-up land indicates an overall increase in temperature that affects urban heat island conditions and urban ecology. The data used in this study is from Landsat 8 accessed from Google Earth Engine. The research aims to 1) analyze the phenomena of urban heat island (UHI) and 2) urban ecological conditions related to temperature based on the value of urban thermal field variance index (UTFVI). The results of the research show that spatial relationship between the East and South of Tegal City with Tegal Regency caused almost all of its territory classified as affected areas. In addition, the East Tegal area is the center of the city where all concentrations of economic activities, education centers, and government service centers in Tegal City. Linkage of Evaluation the urban ecological conditions in the aspect of land surface temperature based on UTFVI values showed the same pattern.
