Abstract

Toothbrushing skills in preschool children are crucial for dental health. However, children often struggle to apply the correct techniques. A preliminary study conducted on 5-6-year-old children at Raden Paku Kindergarten in Surabaya revealed that most of them had inadequate skills in performing toothbrushing movements. Educational media serve as an effective tool for conveying messages to enhance toothbrushing skills. Efforts to improve these skills can be implemented using the TURBODENT (Try Using Box Dental) media. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Try Using Box Dental media on the toothbrushing skills of 5-6-year-old children at Raden Paku Kindergarten in Surabaya. This research employs a quasi-experimental method with a pretest-posttest control group design. The study sample consists of 40 children aged 5-6 years, divided into two groups: the intervention group and the control group. Data collection instruments include an observation checklist for toothbrushing skills. Data analysis techniques involve the Wilcoxon test and the Mann-Whitney test. Results: the Wilcoxon test for the intervention group shows a p-value of 0.000, while the control group has a p-value of 1.000. The Mann-Whitney test results in a p-value of 0.000 or < 0.05. Abstract

Preschool children represent a critical developmental stage in which foundational health behaviors, includingtoothbrushing, begin to form. Although most Indonesian children aged ≥3 years brush their teeth daily, only a small proportiondo so correctly, resulting in persistently high rates of dental and oral health problems. This study addresses the problem oflow toothbrushing knowledge and inadequate brushing practices among preschool children. The aim of this research was toevaluate the effectiveness of video tutorial–based dental health education in enhancing preschool children’s independence, knowledge, and practical skills in toothbrushing. A pre-experimental study with a pre-test–post-test control group design wasconducted among 38 preschool children enrolled in Putra Harapan Kindergarten and Dewi Sartika Kindergarten, Tuban.Participants were divided into an experimental group receiving video tutorial education and a control group receiving verbaleducation only. Data on knowledge and toothbrushing practices were collected using structured observation sheets, andanalyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test and Mann–Whitney U test. The results demonstrated a significant improvementin both knowledge and toothbrushing practices in the experimental group after 21 days of intervention (p < 0.001). In contrast, the control group showed no significant changes in either outcome. Between-group comparisons further indicated that videotutorial education was significantly more effective than verbal instruction in increasing correct toothbrushing knowledge andpractices (p < 0.001). In conclusion, video tutorial media is an effective educational tool for enhancing preschool children’sindependence in toothbrushing. Its engaging visual format improves comprehension and encourages children to imitate properbrushing movements, leading to better oral hygiene behaviors. The findings support the integration of video-based learninginto early childhood dental health programs and future studies with longer follow-up periods are recommended to assesslong-term behavioral retention.

Abstract

Particularly during the 5th week of gestation when primary tooth enamel begins forming. Disruptions during this crucial period can lead to suboptimal enamel structure, increasing susceptibility to cavities in toddlers. A study conducted observed dental examinations of 10 stunted toddlers, all of whom exhibited dental caries. This prompted an investigation into whether maternal nutrition during pregnancy correlates with primary tooth caries in stunted toddlers. The research, a retrospective case-control study using purposive sampling of 90 respondents, utilized maternal BMI data and assessed primary tooth caries incidence. Analysis using Spearman's non-parametric correlation test indicated a significant relationship (p=0.001, r=0.351) between maternal nutritional status and primary tooth caries. Findings from the Umbulsari Community Health Center revealed that most mothers had below-normal nutritional status during pregnancy, and stunted toddlers averaged 7.3 dental caries. It was concluded that there was a relationship between maternal nutritional status during pregnancy and primary tooth caries in stunted toddlers at the Umbulsari Community Health Center with a weak correlation coefficient and the direction of correlation between variables was negative or inversely proportional.
