Abstract

Down syndrome children are mentally retarded and most of them have poor oral health and are unable to carry out dental hygiene independently due to cognitive and motor limitations. It was found that 83% of dental hygiene (debris index) was in the moderate category in children with Down syndrome. Efforts to improve dental hygiene can be done by using a modified toothbrush. The aim of the research is to determine the difference in the effectiveness of using a conventional toothbrush and a modified toothbrush with a handle (SIGIGA) in reducing the debris index in children with Down syndrome. This type of research is quasi-experimental. The sample size was 30 respondents from children with Down syndrome who were selected using a total sampling technique. The data collection instrument used was the debris index examination sheet. The data analysis techniques used are the Wilcoxon test and the Mann-Whitney test. The results of the Wilcoxon test to see the difference in plaque scores before and after treatment obtained significant results ρ (0.001) < 0.05 in the conventional toothbrush group and the modified handled toothbrush group. The results of the Mann-Whitney test showed ρ (0.000) < 0.05. This value shows that H0 is rejected, so there is a difference in the effectiveness of using a conventional toothbrush and a modified toothbrush with a handle (SIGIGA) in reducing the debris index in children with Down syndrome. Conclusions from the research : There is a difference in the effectiveness of using a conventional toothbrush and a modified toothbrush with a handle (SIGIGA) in reducing the debris index in children with Down syndrome.

Abstract

Particularly during the 5th week of gestation when primary tooth enamel begins forming. Disruptions during this crucial period can lead to suboptimal enamel structure, increasing susceptibility to cavities in toddlers. A study conducted observed dental examinations of 10 stunted toddlers, all of whom exhibited dental caries. This prompted an investigation into whether maternal nutrition during pregnancy correlates with primary tooth caries in stunted toddlers. The research, a retrospective case-control study using purposive sampling of 90 respondents, utilized maternal BMI data and assessed primary tooth caries incidence. Analysis using Spearman's non-parametric correlation test indicated a significant relationship (p=0.001, r=0.351) between maternal nutritional status and primary tooth caries. Findings from the Umbulsari Community Health Center revealed that most mothers had below-normal nutritional status during pregnancy, and stunted toddlers averaged 7.3 dental caries. It was concluded that there was a relationship between maternal nutritional status during pregnancy and primary tooth caries in stunted toddlers at the Umbulsari Community Health Center with a weak correlation coefficient and the direction of correlation between variables was negative or inversely proportional.

Abstract

Nutritional status during pregnancy is important for fetal development. Poor maternal nutritional status can cause delayed eruption of primary teeth in toddlers. This study was conducted because it was found that 6 out of 10 stunted toddlers who underwent dental examinations had delayed tooth eruption. This study aimed to investigate any potential associations between the pregnant women’s nutritional status and the toddler’s teeth who experience delayed eruption. This research is retrospective analytic. The total sample was 78 respondents, taken by purposive sampling method. The first visit of the Maternal and Child Health (KIA) book utilizing the Body Mass Index (BMI) to evaluate nutritional status of expectant mothers. Tooth eruption in toddlers was measured through dental examination. The analysis used was the Spearman correlation test. The findings indicated that most of mothers of toddlers during pregnancy had a nutritional status between 18.5-24.9 kg/m2 or fell into the typical group (52.6%), but from the results of dental eruption examination it was found that most of the stunted toddlers experienced delayed tooth eruption (66.7%). The conclusion of the study is that the pregnant women’s nutritional status is connected to the primary teeth’s eruption in stunted toddlers with ρ = 0.035 (p<0.05). This study has implications for the importance of paying attention to pregnant women’s dietary consumption in an attempt to avoid delayed tooth eruption in stunted toddlers.
