Abstract

The implementation of the Writing-to-Learn method is an effort to integrate ecological literacy in student paper writing. This research uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive design, involving students of the Indonesian Language and Literature Education study program who take the Writing Scientific Papers course. Data was obtained through observation, document analysis, and in-depth interviews. The analysis was carried out in the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawn. The results of the study show that the application of the Writing-to-Learn method effectively increases students' ecological awareness, both from cognitive aspects (environmental knowledge), affective (concern and attitude), and behavior (real actions towards the environment). The average increase in these three aspects reached 0.8 points or equivalent to 28.8%. In addition, the quality of student paper writing also improved with an average overall score of 3.65 in the excellent category, especially in the aspects of writing structure, depth of analysis of ecological issues, and accuracy in the use of scientific language. These findings confirm that the Writing-to-Learn method not only functions as a writing learning strategy, but also as a means of internalizing ecological values that foster environmental awareness and responsibility in students. The integration of ecological literacy through scientific writing activities is a strategic step in realizing continuous education in higher education. Abstract

This study aims to reveal the meaning contained in the poem entitled “Tak Ada Signal” (No Signal) by Dinullah Rayes using Riffaterre's semiotic theory, namely heuristic reading and hermeneutic reading. The research method used is descriptive qualitative research. Data collection was carried out through literature review techniques, namely observation and note-taking. Data analysis was carried out using the descriptive analytical method. The results show that the poem conveys the meaning of a person's lack of response to the guidance they experience. This occurs as a result of the heart being enveloped in darkness, making it insensitive to the whispers of the Most Merciful God. Humans who are still alive physically but have lost their inner sensitivity. They can still see, hear, and speak, but their hearts are no longer sensitive to the truth. He should realize that death is inevitable and that the existence of the afterlife is something that cannot be known with certainty. The poet's introspective attitude reflects that mistakes or evil are not attributed to one person alone, but are possibilities that exist within every human being. Sometimes humans are arrogant and stray from divine values. This indicates a closed state of mind. Thus, awareness of divine guidance cannot remind and accept deep love in the heart. So, the poem actually invites readers to cleanse and soften their hearts so that divine love and light can return to their hearts. Because the obstacle to the relationship between humans and God is not the absence of guidance or light from the divine, but rather the human heart itself, which is too hard and closed

Abstract

The urgency of this research lies in the need for inclusive STEM education in under-resourced settings, demonstrating that low-cost technology can effectively foster innovation and active learning. The purpose of this study is to analyze the representation of the use of simple and low-cost technology in the context of education in the film Spare Parts (2015), as well as to examine how the characters in it demonstrate creativity, collaboration, and innovation in facing resource constraints, in order to identify educational values related to STEM empowerment conveyed through the film’s narrative. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method to analyze the representation of low-cost technology and STEM empowerment in the film Spare Parts (2015). The object of the study is the film directed by Sean McNamara, with scenes, dialogues, character actions, and visual elements as the primary data. Data collection was conducted through repeated film viewing, documentation of relevant scenes, and literature review of scholarly sources related to STEM education, educational technology, and film studies. Data analysis involved identifying, categorizing, and interpreting film elements based on the theoretical framework. To ensure data validity, theory triangulation was applied by integrating the Philosophy of Technology, STEM Empowerment Theory, and Sociocultural Learning Theory. This study concludes that Spare Parts (2015) portrays low-cost technology, creativity, and STEM learning as interconnected processes shaped by limited resources. The film shows that resource constraints can stimulate innovation through improvisation, trial and error, and collaborative problem-solving, where students transform simple materials into functional technology. By emphasizing student agency, mentorship, and teamwork, the film represents STEM empowerment as a holistic learning process that fosters confidence, creativity, and meaningful educational experiences in resource-limited contexts. The findings suggest that film-based narratives like Spare Parts can be used as pedagogical tools to inspire creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving while promoting affordable STEM learning approaches.

Abstract

This article aims to examine a literary work that has been adapted into a film through the perspective of ekranisasi as proposed by Pamusuk Eneste. This study employs a qualitative research method. The research data were collected using a note-taking reading technique and data triangulation to ensure data validity. The data consist of excerpts of dialogue, plot elements, and narration from the film Gadis Kretek, directed by Andini and Isfansyah, as the primary source. Meanwhile, the novel Gadis Kretek by Ratih Kumala serves as the comparative source in this study. Ekranisasi encompasses three main processes: reduction, addition, and variation. These three stages form the basis for adapting and reconstructing the storyline to meet the demands of film production without altering the original message of the literary work. The implications of these findings provide insights into the process of ekranisasi in literary works adapted into films, indicating that differences in storyline or narrative ideas between a film and its source novel arise due to certain reasons, limitations, and other influencing factors in the adaptation process.

Abstract

This study examines resistance to gender norms in Sayaka Murata’s Convenience Store Woman through a feminist literary perspective. This study focuses on the representation of women’s roles within Japan’s patriarchal society where social expectations surrounding marriage, career, and femininity strongly shape women’s identities. This research employs a qualitative method using feminist literary criticism by Judith Butler about Gender Performativity. The analysis explores the narrative strategies and the characters in reinforcing feminist discourse within the context of modern Japan. The findings reveals that the main character, Keiko Furukura, is portrayed as a form of resistance to the dominant gender norm in Japan. Her rejection of conventional life trajectories such as marriage and corporate success destabilizes hegemonic ideals of femininity and exposes the constraints imposed by patriarchal values. Through its characters and narrative strategies, the novel also advances a feminist critique by revealing patriarchal values that marginalize women. Ultimately, this study demonstrates that Convenience Store Woman articulates a subtle yet powerful feminist critique by foregrounding nonconformity as a form of resistance. This study also reveal that the novel redefines female autonomy beyond socially imposed ideals of womanhood.

Abstract

In the digital era, integrating social media into language learning has become increasingly important to address students’ writing challenges and align instructional practices with their technological realities. This study aims to explore how social media can be used to improve students’ writing skills at the tertiary level. A qualitative descriptive research design was employed to examine students’ experiences in using social media. The participants were 54 university students enrolled in the Short Functional Text course at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta, with 25 students purposively selected for semi-structured interviews. Data were collected through online questionnaires and interviews, while triangulation was applied to ensure validity. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify social media platforms used, reasons for usage, as well as perceived advantages and disadvantages. The findings indicate that students most frequently used Instagram, TikTok, Twitter/X, WhatsApp, and Duolingo. These platforms were chosen due to ease of access, practicality, and the availability of abundant learning content. The main benefits included improved writing skills, increased confidence, flexible learning opportunities, access to reliable resources, and enhanced vocabulary. However, students also faced challenges such as distractions, poor internet connection, low confidence in English ability, and decreased grammar and spelling accuracy.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the glorification of the Roaring Twenties in Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris through a biographical criticism approach. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach using biographical criticism to analyse the glorification of the Roaring Twenties in Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris (2011). The data consist of dialogues, visual scenes, and audio elements taken from the film, supported by secondary sources such as scholarly articles and director interviews. The analysis is conducted through hermeneutic interpretation to examine how narrative, visual, and sound elements reflect Allen’s personal worldview and artistic longing. The findings reveal that Midnight in Paris (2011) strongly glorifies the Roaring Twenties through nostalgic figures, events, products, characterisation, style, and setting. The film represents the 1920s as a cultural and artistic golden age, portraying writers and artists as idealised cultural icons while emphasising creativity, elegance, and emotional fulfilment. This romanticised depiction contrasts sharply with the cynical, materialistic modern world, illustrating how nostalgia functions as an emotional response to contemporary dissatisfaction and shapes viewers’ perceptions of the past.
