Abstract

This study aims to examine the kinship of Sumbawa and Madurese languages with three main objectives, namely are 1) identifying the sound correspondence between Sumbawa and Madurese languages, 2) determining the level of kinship between the two languages based on lexicostatistical calculations, and 3) calculating the separation time between Sumbawa and Madurese languages. This research is a descriptive study that applied quantitative and qualitative approaches. The data sources used consist of 200 basic Swadesh vocabularies. Data collection for Sumbawa and Madurese languages was carried out using interview techniques with native speakers of both languages. Data analysis uses lexicostatistics and glottochronology based on comparative historical linguistic studies described by Crowley & Bowern (2010) and Keraf (1996). The results of the study show that the correspondence of consonant sounds between the two languages tends to remain constant and unchanged, but vowel sounds experience irregular changes. There are also strong sounds that are maintained such as the sounds of mata, lima and empat gloss. The level of kinship of Sumbawa and Madurese language is 39.3% and is included in the family category. In addition, the Sumbawa and Madurese languages are estimated to have originated from the same proto-language around 1,962 to 2,154 years ago

Abstract

Language plays a central role in the teaching process because they connect, complement knowledge, and shape learners’ worldviews. When learning a language, textbooks play a very important role in conveying language input as well as shaping leaners’ knowledge of language structure and social roles. In Indonesia, English textbooks are expected to meet the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) standards to supports communicative competence across educational level s. However, recent studies show that many high school English textbooks fail to meet the expected ECFR B1 level. Addressing this issue this study investigates how transitivity processes and participants are represented in the reading sections of Pathway to English textbook for SMA/MA Grade X with the aim of discovering how language structures facilitate students’ linguistics and cognitive development. Using descriptive qualitative method and discourse analysis grounded in Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics theorized by Gerot and Wignell, the study analyzes 297 clauses from selected texts. It determines the process types of transitivity and explores participant roles in each process. The results reveal dominance of material processes (51.85%), which implies focus on physical activity and concrete events, followed by elational (29.97%), mental (7.74%), verbal (6.06%), existential (3.03%), and behavioral (1.35%) processes, none of the meteorological processes. Participant roles such as actors and goals mainly took place in material processes, while sensors and phenomena were common in mental processes. This distribution shows that although the textbook offers diversity in types of transitivity, it may fall short in offering balance to ensure diversified linguistic exposure. These findings offer suggestions for textbook developers and teachers to strengthen the expression of the process of transitivity, thus improving English instruction and enriching students’ linguistic and critical thinking skills in EFL context.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the semantic meanings and emotional content embedded in the lyrics of Ina’, a traditional song by Apang from Sumbawa, which centers the figure of a mother as the embodiment of love and sacrifice. Unlike previous studies that rarely combine semantic and emotional analysis within the context of Sumbawan folk songs, this research applies a lexical semantic approach and emotion analysis grounded in cultural linguistics to explore how word choices convey deep affective, spiritual, and social values. The study employs a qualitative-descriptive method, collecting data through lyric documentation, observations of local cultural contexts, and semi-structured interviews with native speakers and cultural practitioners. Data were analyzed by identifying denotative and connotative meanings, as well as interpreting emerging emotional themes. The findings reveal that the lyrics of Ina’ contain positively connoted expressions that evoke empathy, gratitude, and respect toward the mother figure. This highlights that language in traditional music serves not only as an aesthetic medium but also as a means of transmitting familial and spiritual values deeply rooted in Sumbawan culture. The implications of this research are expected to enrich cultural linguistic and semantic studies based on local wisdom, while also supporting efforts to preserve oral literature through scholarly approaches

Abstract

Fillers are words, phrases, or even sounds which are utilized to fill the silence phase of the speaking process that always be viewed as a lack of speaking skills or disfluency. There are two types of fillers based on Rose (1998) which are unlexicalized fillers and lexicalized fillers. However, there are 5 functions of fillers based on Stenstrom (1994) namely, hesitating, empathizing, mitigating, editing terms, and time-creating devices. Furthermore, this study intends to uncover the types of fillers and the functions of fillers utilized by Aga Murdoch as an English native speaker in her live YouTube video. In this live YouTube video, she teaches about English grammar especially tenses. Therefore, the utterances that utilized in this teaching is a source of data that will be studied. Content analysis and qualitative approach are used as the methodology of this study. However, this study also uses data reduction, data presentation and drawing conclusion to manage the data. In order to ensure the validity and trustworthiness of the results, this study will also utilize investigator triangulation. On the other hand, the outcome of this study showed that Aga Murdoch used 147 fillers. In this study, there were 67 unlexicalized fillers dan 80 lexicalized fillers. As a conclusion, fillers have a prominent role to maintain a good speaking process. Besides, several aspects should be fulfilled when using fillers in daily interactions. Moreover, this study is expected to enhance speaking skill awareness and provide more comprehension regarding filler

Abstract

This study aims to present the mode of transactional messages contained in the short story Jangan Kau Beli Rumah Itu (Don’t Buy That House) by K. Usman. The research method used in this study is descriptive qualitative research. Data collection was carried out through literature review techniques, namely observation and note-taking. Data analysis was conducted using the five codes proposed by Roland Barthes. The research findings yielded a total of nineteen data points. Four data points related to the hermeneutic code reveal the mysterious presence of the character Gurun, whose identity remains unknown and whose absence during congregational prayers at the mosque is perceived as unusual by the worshippers. Three data points related to the connotative code illustrate figurative expressions reflecting the absence of Gurun, the congregation's boredom due to repetitive and uninspiring sermons, and a metaphor suggesting that preachers should study harder from various teachers and sources. Three data points concerning the symbolic code indicate the presence of three symbols: statues or monuments representing individuals who refuse to learn and thus possess stagnant knowledge; full-grown rice grains symbolizing humility; and evening time representing old age. Seven data points related to the action code highlight active actions performed by characters in the short story. Two data points related to the cultural code refer to the respect a son-in-law shows to his in-laws and to Gurun's religious knowledge and steadfast faith. The main message conveyed in the story emphasizes the importance of preserving one's faith

Abstract

The rapid influence of modernization in this digital era has led to a decline in the use of Sumbawa regional languages, especially among the younger generation. This phenomenon will lead to language decline or even extinction if no concrete efforts are made to preserve them. In this context, linguistic studies of structural aspects such as phrases have become increasingly urgent. Phrases in the Sumbawa Besar dialect of Sumbawa are a field of study worthy of further exploration. Therefore, this study aims to identify Sumbawa phrases in the Sumbawa Besar dialect based on their categories. The analysis stage utilizes the distribution method, a method whose analysis is sourced from the linguistic data itself, namely the Sumbawa language in the Sumbawa Besar dialect. The main technique in the distribution method is the direct element division technique (BUL), which is used to break down phrases into core elements and their boundaries. The analysis is carried out using basic and advanced techniques. The basic technique is the direct element division technique where lingual units (e.g., phrases or clauses) are divided into their constituent direct elements. Furthermore, the substitution technique is also used in order to determine the core word class of the phrase by replacing one of the phrase elements and seeing whether the phrase structure remains intact or changes. Data collected in the field in the form of Sumbawa language phrases are validated using triangulation techniques, namely: data triangulation; researcher triangulation; theory triangulation; and method triangulation. This study did not use researcher triangulation because this study was not a group study. Phrases found in the Sumbawa dialect of Sumbawa Besar have similarities with the types of phrases found in Indonesian. This is proven by the phrase data in the Sumbawa dialect of Sumbawa Besar which consists of: a) noun phrases; b) verb phrases; c) adjective phrases; and d) prepositional phrases. Each phrase in the Sumbawa dialect of Sumbawa Besar is built with core elements. As found in the data: nominal phrase → its core is a noun (ñIr uda); 2) verbal phrase → its core is a verb (maan rawi); 3) adjectival phrase → its core is an adjective (tpa jaka bal); and 4) prepositional phrase → preceded by a preposition (pa dalam lat).

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the short story Rindu Menjelang Senja by Raidah Athirah in the perspective of Carl Thompson's travel writing theory (2011) and postcolonial studies, focusing on three main aspects: Reporting the World, Revealing the Self, and Representing the Other. The method used is qualitative text analysis with a close reading approach to identify how diasporic narratives in this short story reflect identity negotiations between Indonesian (Eastern) and Polish (Western) cultures, as well as postcolonial power dynamics. The results show that this short story meets Thompson's travel writing criteria: (1) objective description of Poland (Reporting the World), such as snow weather and local customs; (2) expression of Sri's subjectivity as a diaspora (Revealing the Self), including the conflicts of adaptation and loneliness; and (3) ambiguous representation of Western culture (Representing the Other), the character does not explicitly criticise Polish domination but reveals inequality through personal experiences (for example, working as a nanny despite having a higher education). This analysis also reveals diasporic ambivalence through the concept of mimicry, Sri imitates Polish culture while missing Indonesia. This short story is a complex form of postcolonial travel writing, how diasporic identities are formed through constant negotiations between the self and the Other.

Abstract

This study examines the development of literary literacy in schools in the era of algorithms, automation, and artificial intelligence, with a focus on the specific role of creative learning. Using a qualitative approach and literature review methods, the study analyzes secondary data from books and journals to identify trends, challenges, and strategies in creative literature learning that utilizes technology. The rapid evolution of technology and the increasing complexity of information highlight the importance of literacy skills in the information age. Cultivating literacy now includes the ability to access, evaluate, and utilize rapidly changing information from diverse sources, as well as navigate the vast amounts of available data. These findings suggest that integrating technology into creative learning can significantly enhance students' reading interest and critical thinking skills. For example, platforms like 1000Kitap and Perusall have been shown to increase reading motivation and facilitate collaborative reading, supporting diverse learners through inclusive pedagogy. However, the study also identifies persistent barriers, such as disparities in technology access and suboptimal digital literacy among students. The rise of misinformation and conspiracy theories online further underscores the importance of information literacy in distinguishing credible sources and combating the spread of false information. Creative learning makes a significant contribution to fostering an adaptive and inclusive literary learning ecosystem in the digital age. This emphasizes the need for innovative and collaborative learning models to address the dynamics of contemporary education. Project-based learning and game-based learning are seen as relevant models that encourage critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration by engaging students in real-world projects and interactive game elements. Furthermore, the integration of AI can produce innovative and efficient learning experiences if a balanced approach is adopted that combines AI technology with innovative teaching methods and maintains a continuous focus on research and development. The implications of this research indicate that creative learning is crucial for enriching students' literary literacy and stimulating their creativity in today's complex era
