Abstract

This study aims to analyze the forms of oppression experienced by Firdaus in the novel Woman at Point Zero through the lens of Gayatri C. Spivak’s postcolonial feminist approach. The novel represents the experiences of women living in an oppressive patriarchal and feudal society. Firdaus, the main character, is confronted with various harsh realities as a woman who lacks power, voice, and control over her own body. This study uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods, aiming to understand social phenomena related to women’s experiences. Data collection was conducted using the reading and note-taking method, which involved analyzing the novel's text and recording relevant quotations. The data source used is the Indonesian translation of Woman at Point Zero (Perempuan di Titik Nol) by Nawal El Saadawi, translated by Amir Sutaarga in 2002. The data consists of narratives describing characters, dialogues, and events that illustrate the forms of oppression experienced by Firdaus. These forms of oppression include physical and sexual violence, economic inequality, and the silencing of her voice. In the face of such marginalization, Firdaus resists in various ways—by remaining silent, rejecting imposed norms, reclaiming control over her body, and ultimately taking the extreme step of killing her pimp. The death sentence she receives is not an act of despair, but a final form of resistance over her body and the choices she makes as a subaltern woman

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the translation techniques and overall quality of the Indonesian subtitles in the film Purple Hearts, with the novel of the same title serving as a secondary source. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method using documentation as the data collection technique. Data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s model, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawaing with verification. Out of 125 identified subtitle segments, modulation was the most frequently applied technique (32%), followed by adaptation (17,6%), and literal translation (12%), while reduction was the least used (1,6%). The assessment of translation quality, based on Nababan dkk. (2015), shows that the subtitles are generally of good quality, with 72% accuracy, 76% acceptability, and 68% readability. Overall, the subtitles are considered accurate and natural, though some inconsistencies slightly affect the overall quality. The findings are expected to contribute to the development of audiovisual translation studies and serve as a practical reference for improving subtitle translation quality in Indonesia

Abstract

This study discusses the meaning relations of synonymous pairs of Indonesian time adjectives using synonymy theory in the realm of lexical semantics. The meaning relations between synonymous words are not absolute. In certain contexts, synonymous words can be used interchangeably, but in other contexts they cannot be used interchangeably. Therefore, this study attempts to identify the distribution of patterns of use of synonymous pairs of time adjectives and what aspects differentiate the meanings of words in synonymous pairs of time adjectives. The purpose of this study is to prove the existence of differences in meaning between synonymous pairs. Data in this study were obtained from newspapers, e-books of short stories, dictionaries, and based on the researcher's linguistic intuition. This study applies a descriptive analysis method with a qualitative approach. The data collection method in this study uses the listening method with the reading and note-taking technique. Data analysis uses Simak method with the direct element sharing technique and the substitution technique. The results show that word pairs have different distributions and in certain contexts their use cannot be interchanged. This is possible because there are differences in meaning caused by differences in implications, applications, one meaning being more general than the other, taste values and differences in the variety of usage

Abstract

Feminism is a form of activity that requires balance or justice, as well as rights for women. Social inequality in terms of gender remains a topic of discussion to this day, South Korea is one of them. The purpose of this study is to understand feminism at the level of representation, reality, and ideology of Blackpink's video entitled How You Like That. How You Like That carries the theme of women's freedom, strength, and opposing those who look down on women. Although the theme of the Blackpink video does not explicitly address the issue of feminism, to identify the representation of feminist ideology in this video clip, the study uses John Fiske's semiotic analysis approach, The Codes of Television theory, and the method of observing, noting, and screenshots. The results of the study indicate three levels according to John Fiske's semiotics, namely reality, representation, and ideology. Furthermore, the level of representation shows women's freedom, self-existence, and self-confidence. Meanwhile, the ideology of the How You Like That video clip contains a form of feminism, especially post-modernism. This study shows that the symbols and signs contained in the video clip represent the ideology of post-modern feminism that creates a new, meaningful message, and provides positive energy to women to be able to fight discrimination. This research has succeeded in revealing the form of representation of Blackpink's feminist ideology in their video clip entitled How You Like That

Abstract

This study analyzes affective meaning in the comment sections of Indonesian TikTok news accounts using Leech's (1981) semantic theory and Ekman's (1992) framework of six basic emotions: happiness, sadness, anger, disgust, surprise, and fear. The research aims to identify how TikTok users express emotions and attitudes toward news content through linguistic choices and emoji usage. A qualitative content analysis approach was employed, wherein twenty-five comments were collected through purposive sampling from five official news accounts: Inilah.com, Kumparan, Kompas TV, CNN Indonesia, and Detik.com. Data collection occurred between June and November 2025, focusing on videos with a minimum of ten million views. From each account, five of the most-liked comments were selected for semantic analysis. Both researchers independently analyzed the comments and compared interpretations to ensure reliability. The findings show that anger appeared most frequently (7 instances), followed by fear (6), sadness (4), disgust (4), happiness (2), and surprise (2). These results indicate that emotional responses on TikTok are often dominated by negative or serious feelings, reflecting users' sensitivity toward issues such as injustice, danger, and tragedy. Overall, the study concludes that affective meaning in TikTok comment sections not only represents individual emotions but also reflects collective empathy and cultural values within Indonesian digital discourse.

Abstract

This study explores the relationship between language, personality, and the moral identity crisis experienced by the main character, Aris, in the film Ipar Adalah Maut. Using a cognitive and pragmatic psycholinguistic approach, the research seeks to understand how shifts in Aris’s register and speech style reflect his inner conflicts, particularly cognitive dissonance and identity fragmentation. The data were collected through a documentation technique, which involved carefully rewatching the film and transcribing all of Aris’s utterances related to social dynamics, interpersonal relations, and moments of conflict. These utterances were then selected and grouped to facilitate a structured analysis. A descriptive qualitative method was employed to interpret Aris’s speech patterns in a systematic manner. The findings reveal that Aris uses language not merely as a tool for communication but as a strategy for shaping and protecting his public persona. In public settings, he presents himself with controlled and polished language. However, in more personal situations, his speech shifts toward rationalization and emotional manipulation. This change reflects his strong desire to conceal guilt and evade moral responsibility. Quantitative findings showing the limited expression of guilt further support the conclusion that Aris is highly skilled at constructing a “linguistic fortress” to shield himself. Overall, the study highlights the dual function of language: it serves both as a mirror that reflects the speaker’s psychological condition and as a rhetorical mask used to preserve one’s image and justify morally questionable actions

Abstract

This study explores the psychological impact of female objectification as reflected in Billie Eilish’s song “Male Fantasy.” Despite significant social progress in gender equality, women continue to experience objectification, where their value is assessed primarily based on appearance rather than individuality or competence. Drawing upon Fredrickson and Roberts’ Objectification Theory (1997), this research examines how objectifying cultural messages are internalized by women and manifest in self-perception, emotional experiences, and behavior. The study employs a qualitative approach using thematic content analysis of the song’s lyrics, focusing on expressions related to self- objectification, body surveillance, body shame, and emotional distress. The analysis reveals that the lyrics vividly illustrate the internalization of societal beauty standards and patriarchal expectations, with the protagonist frequently monitoring her body, expressing dissatisfaction, and experiencing feelings of inadequacy and emotional strain. Findings indicate that music, as a cultural medium, not only reflects the pressures of female objectification but also provides insight into its psychological consequences. The song’s melancholic tone and introspective lyrics serve as a powerful representation of how women navigate the tension between societal ideals and authentic emotional experiences. This study contributes to the literature by highlighting the underexplored domain of lyrical content in examining female objectification, offering theoretical and practical implications for understanding the pervasive impact of objectifying messages on women’s mental health. Future research may extend this approach to additional media forms to further investigate the relationship between cultural representation and psychological well-being in women

Abstract

BIPA learning in the current era requires an approach that is not only oriented in mastering the structure but also in understanding culture and communication contexts. One of the main challenges in BIPA learning is the limitation of teaching media that is able to integrate linguistic and cultural elements simultaneously. This study aims to examine the role and potential of humor caricatures as an intercultural learning medium in the context of BIPA. The focus of the study is directed at the contribution of humor caricatures in supporting the development of communicative competence, cultural sensitivity, and pragmatic understanding of foreign learners. The research method used is a literature review with a descriptive qualitative approach. The data sources are in the form of scientific articles, books, and research reports relevant to the topics of caricature, visual humor, multimodality, and intercultural language learning published in the period 2014–2024. The data was analyzed descriptive-interpretively through the stages of thematic grouping, concept interpretation, and synthesis of previous research findings. The results of the study show that humor caricatures have a function more than just an entertainment medium. Caricatures are able to represent social values, cultural criticism, and local symbols that help BIPA learners understand the context of Indonesian use more fully. In addition, the use of humor caricatures has been proven to increase intercultural sensitivity, critical thinking skills, and visual literacy of learners. The conclusion of this study confirms that humor caricatures are worthy of being developed as an innovative learning medium in BIPA because they are able to bridge language and culture contextually. The integration of this media has the potential to create more reflective, communicative, and meaningful learning

Abstract

This study examines how social inequality is represented in Instagram digital comics @komikfaktap throughout 2024. Using Teun A. van Dijk's Critical Discourse approach, this study seeks to understand not only the messages in text and images, but also the way comics shape, influence, and strengthen the social meaning of their readers. Comics were chosen purposively because they contain social issues that reflect the dynamics of politics, economy, education, and power relations that are close to the daily experience of society. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method. Data was obtained through a purposive sampling technique on digital comic uploads on @komikfaktap's Instagram account, which was collected through documentation in the form of screenshots and recording supporting information. The data were then analyzed by paying attention to the structure of the discourse (macrostructure, microstructure, and superstructure), social cognition, and social context according to Teun A. van Dijk's framework. The findings of the study show that most of the comics (55.6%) highlight the inequality of democracy and political practices. Others discussed economic policies (22.2%), stagnant education situation (11.1%), and various forms of international dominance (11.1%). The results of the analysis showed that the comics used humor, visual metaphors, and symbols that were easily recognizable, so that the social criticism conveyed felt light but still sharp. In terms of social cognition, comics make use of the reader's collective memory and life experiences, making the criticism displayed not only entertainment, but also reflection. In a broader social context, comics serve as an alternative space in providing the public with an opportunity to see the power structures at work in everyday life. The results of this study show that digital comics not only function as an entertainment medium, but also as a means of critical literacy that is able to reach a wide audience quickly and effectively. Follow-up research can broaden the focus to help shape the power of disseminating critical discourse on social media
