Abstract

Nomadland (2020) film directed by Chloé Zhao, dives deep into the world of modern nomads in America after the recession, inspired by Jessica Bruder's real-life research. This study uses a thematic approach to unpack how the movie portrays stigma, increasing in on issues like financial struggles, loneliness, and feeling pushed to the edges of society. By closely examining the story, conversations, camera work, and audio, it shows how the film pushes back against the shame society loads on these nomads, while celebrating their strength and grit. What stands out is how stigma shows up as outright rejection and treating people like they're less than human, but the movie flips that by making the characters feel real and alive, and by pointing out the bigger unfair systems at play. This has broader currents for talks about how media and society treat marginalized folks, stressing why we need more compassion for those on the fringes. Overall, it adds to our understanding of movies and stigma by showing how film can break down harmful stereotypes

Abstract

This study aims to analyze narrative development in early childhood using Applebee’s narrative development model. The main focus of this research is on a 3-year-and-9-month-old child’s ability to construct narrative structures through spontaneous storytelling that emerges during play. Data were collected through naturalistic observation and audio recording during free play, daily conversations, and storytelling activities. The resulting narratives were transcribed and analyzed using Applebee’s developmental stages: heap, sequence, primitive narrative, and true narrative. The findings indicate that the child’s narrative development varies, ranging from heap and sequence to primitive narrative, with some stories approaching a true narrative structure. This analysis also highlights the importance of symbolic play media and social interaction in supporting children’s narrative development. This research is expected to contribute to the development of language and literacy learning for young children through storytelling approaches

Abstract

This study goal is to analyze the types and meanings of polysemy found in Ariana Grande’s album 'Positions'. Polysemy, as a linguistic phenomenon, refers to a single word that has multiple related meanings. The research focuses on identifying polysemous words in song lyrics and analyzing their contextual meanings based on Cruse’s theory (1986). The qualitative descriptive method was employed, and the data were collected from the official lyrics of selected songs. The findings revealed that polysemy is commonly used in Ariana Grande’s lyrics to enrich the aesthetic and emotional value of the songs. The dominant type of polysemy found was contextual polysemy, where words convey meanings dependent on the song’s narrative and tone. This study contributes to semantic analysis in linguistics and provides insights into how pop music employs polysemy to create artistic ambiguity and emotional resonance.

Abstract

This article aims to uncover the dimension of prophetism in the existential journey of the main character through an interdisciplinary approach between Kuntowijoyo's prophetic literature and Jean-Paul Sartre's existentialism. This research method uses a qualitative hermeneutic method. The data collection technique uses the read, record, and triangulation methods of data to ensure the validity of the data. The data in the study includes narratives, monologues, dialogues presented in the form of words, phrases, and sentences that contain the dimension of prophetism. The source of this research data was taken from a novel entitled A Portion of Chicken Noodles Before Death by Brian Khrisna. The results of the study show that in the existential journey of the main character, there is a prophetic dimension, including humanization, liberation, and transcendence according to Kuntowijoyo's theory. The humanization dimension is depicted by the actions of the characters that reflect the humanizing attitude of humans, such as maintaining brotherhood, helping, and respecting others. The dimension of liberation is shown in the form of liberation of the economic system by efforts to free oneself from poverty, liberation of the knowledge system, and internal liberation in the form of self-acceptance of His destiny. Third, the dimension of transcendence is reflected in the behavior of the character who is khauf, qana'ah, ridha, sincere, tawakkal, raja', gratitude, and aspects of spiritual awareness in the main character. The prophetic dimension plays a role in resurrecting the consciousness and existence of the main character to return to living an authentic life (Sartre). This study confirms that works of popular fiction can be explored for their prophetic values and can be integrated with the philosophy of existentialism as a medium of inner reflection in the face of the complexities of modern life

Abstract

The ruwatan tradition in Javanese culture is a profound spiritual ceremony, intended to balance an individual's life through purification and liberation from negative influences. The purpose of this research is to explore and understand the ruwatan tradition in a deeper context, both in terms of its history, practices, and philosophical meaning. This research is ethnographic, aiming to describe the circumstances of a community group closely related to culture. Data collection in this study used interviews and relevant literature review. The data obtained were analyzed through verification and interpretation stages to describe the history, practices, and philosophical meaning of ruwatan in the village of Kambeng Slahung, Ponorogo. Research shows the origins of this tradition are linked to the mythology of Batara Kala, who is believed to influence bad luck. Ruwatan is primarily aimed at the Sukerta group, who are considered born with bad luck and need to be physically and spiritually cleansed. The ceremony involves various stages, from tirakatan (templation), obligatory bathing, hair and nail cutting, to slametan (prayer offerings) and a murwakala (wayang) performance, all of which are imbued with symbolic and philosophical meaning. The philosophical meaning of ruwatan encompasses self-purification and the relationship between humans and nature and supernatural powers, with the hope that the individual undergoing the ritual will be protected from suffering and misfortune. Besides serving as a form of religious belief, this tradition also strengthens social bonds and preserves Javanese cultural values rich in local wisdom

Abstract

This study aims to describe the process and characteristics of word derivation with unique morphemes in Indonesian. The research is motivated by the limited specific studies on this morphological phenomenon, necessitating a comprehensive description to enrich the linguistic treasury of Indonesia. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, with structural theory as the analytical foundation. Data were collected through field survey, observation, and elicitation methods in Suralaga District, East Lombok, while data analysis used the distributional method with substitution techniques. The results indicate that the process referred to as "word derivation" is essentially a compounding process, where a unique morpheme is combined with a base morpheme to form a compound word. The unique morpheme functions as the attached element, while the base morpheme serves as the host element. This study identified ten constructions, such as kering kerontang (dry as a bone) and gelap gulita (pitch dark), which demonstrate the unique and syntactically bound nature of their constituent morphemes. These findings provide a theoretical contribution to Indonesian morphology and practical implications for language teaching.

Abstract

Language as a communication mode reveals certain patterns to both our conscious and unconscious minds which help to index people as a part of certain groups such as determining speech in gender study. Gender study is now commonly grouped into men’s and women’s speeches. Men’s and Women’s sociocultural behaviors are different and can be reflected through their speech. This study aims to analyze the phatic expressions used by two genders: men and women. This study applied a qualitative method with thematic analysis to discover the pattern of gender speech and used quantified data to determine the frequency. The data were collected using BNC64 and the frequency distribution was also taken from the corpus. The findings show that women speak in a more prolonged speech to keep the communication going compared to men who are still using it but in shorter ways than women. The findings show phatic speech in the form of expressing greetings, invitations, comments, and condolences. These results indicate that women are speaking in a more caring and friendly way than men. Therefore, phatic expressions can be used for further study to analyze the characteristics and stereotypes in men’s and women’s conversations in a certain community
