Abstract

This study examines the Goendih-Soerabaja railway line for the period 1903-1922. The purpose of this study is to explain the reasons for the construction of the railroad, the process of building the railroad, and its impact on the surrounding community. The results of this study indicate that the construction of the Goendih-Soerabaja railway line had a positive impact on the economy of the Dutch East Indies Government. Inaugurated on February 1, 1903, rail transportation encouraged economic growth in areas that became the path of the Goendih-Soerabaja railroad. The forced cultivation system has had a major impact on plantations, problems that have occurred due to the damage of export commodities before arriving at the port can now be resolved by the presence of rail transportation. Another factor is that the start of oil drilling operations in the Tjepu area has created the need for large-capacity oil transport in shipping to ports. Another impact of the existence of rail transportation is that the mobility of people who travel now saves more travel time. Keywords: Infrastructure; Railroad Extension; Goendih – Soerabaja Line; Capitalist Economy.

Abstract

This study delves into the role played by the Mindere Welvaart Commission in addressing welfare concerns within the Dutch East Indies. Employing the historical method, including heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography, the study examines the commission's formation and its impact. Findings indicate that the colonial government established the Mindere Welvaart Commission in response to pressure to address the welfare of the indigenous population. While the commission effectively investigated the economic and social issues facing the population, it faced controversy and criticism. Some contemporary figures argued that the commission was formed to delay immediate improvements, while others questioned the accuracy of the presented data. Abstract

This paper discusses the efforts made by the Mangkunegaran government in eradicating disease outbreaks that occurred in the early XX century using both traditional and modern methods. Magkunegaran as a modern kingdom whose initial success came from a sugar factory that had been pioneered since Mangkunegara IV ruled. The economic improvement that was tried to be pioneered turned out to be constrained by the disease outbreak that hit causing casualties. From historical research using document analysis obtained by researchers proves that Mangunegaran has applied both traditional and modern medicine so that disease outbreaks can be resolved. An important conclusion in this research is that Mangkunegaran as a modern kingdom also combines traditional and modern medicine for handling disease outbreaks. Abstract

The construction of Kedungputri Irrigation in Purworejo was carried out to overcome the economic and water crises in Purworejo. The Cultuurstelsel program, deforestation, and the Java War in the mid-19th century caused the crisis. As a solution, the colonial government carried out massive modernization and renovation of irrigation, both physically and institutionally. Modernization of Kedungputri Irrigation was carried out by making new weirs, water locks, and an institutional system that was previously managed by local officials into a special public works department by the Dutch East Indies government. These efforts resulted in an increase in agricultural and plantation yields in Purworejo so that the community's economic conditions became more stable and avoided water and economic crises. In addition, this irrigation also managed to become a power plant for school buildings, government, and military headquarters in Purworejo. In the field of geography, the expansion of irrigation resulted in changes in the morphology of the Purworejo region from moorland to cultivated land for both plantations and agriculture, as well as the expansion of residential land. The method used is the historical research method. The method consists of five stages, namely, topic selection, source study, source verification, interpretation and historiography. Keywords: Modernization; Irrigation; Kedungputri; Purworejo

Abstract

This article discusses the Cikar Festival as a Local Culture of the People of Ambulu District, Jember Regency, 1989-2018. The purpose of this paper is to find out the history of the beginning of the Cikar Festival in Ambulu Subdistrict, what efforts have been made by the community and the government to preserve the Cikar Festival, and to know the development of the Cikar Festival in 1989-2018. This research uses historical methods to uncover the problems that are being studied. This festival originated from the habits of the owners of the cikar in Ambulu Subdistrict, who traveled to Watu Ulo Beach, which is held at every Lebaran Ketupat celebration. In 1989 these activities began to be contested by several Ambulu people. This is evidenced by establishing the Margo Rukun Association, as a forum for cikar artisans to preserve these activities to be more coordinated. Cikar itself is a traditional transportation tool in the form of a cart pulled by two adult cows, which some people in Ambulu District still use. The dynamics related to the reduction in the number of cikar participants are due to the decreasing number of cikar owners and the progress of an increasingly modern era. The significant reduction in the number of participants in the Cikar festival in 2018 made the government not remain silent. So that year the Regent of Jember and the Department of Tourism and Culture of Jember Regency (Disparbud) who were present at the festival made an effort to keep the cikar at Ambulu holding this festival every year and strive for the Cikar festival to become one of the cultural icons in Jember. Abstract

Chinese-Indonesians have long been the subject of discrimination and racism since the colonial period which lasted until the regime of Indonesia’s second president, Soeharto, later known as the New Order Era. Soeharto enacted the policy of assimilation which they were not allowed to have Chinese identity and should abandon their cultural heritage. The May ’98 Tragedy was the turning point to realize that their rights have been violated. After the Reformation, some groups of Chinese-Indonesians tried to voice their rights to seek justice as part of Indonesian citizens by forming the Chinese-Indonesian Association, or INTI. The organization aims to resolve Chinese-related issues, especially the issue of discrimination that has long been experienced by Chinese Indonesians. This paper will explore further the issues faced by Chinese Indonesians, what efforts they have made to solve the problems and the results of their struggle to get their rights back. The study uses a series of interviews with the founders of the Chinese Indonesian Association and literature studies related to this topic. The results of this study indicated that Chinese Indonesians faced some issues related to discrimination and racism in many facets of life including, politics, economy, society, and culture. Through the formation of INTI as a channel to voice their aspirations as well as to negotiate with a wide range of influenced figures, the government eventually enacted policies to restore their rights as Indonesian citizens.
