Abstract

In 1870 the Dutch Colonial Government had a new policy towards the Dutch East Indies as its colony. The promulgation of the Agrarische Wet and Agrarische Besluit by the Dutch Colonial Government, it opened opportunities for investors to invest in the Dutch East Indies. European investors flocked to the Dutch East Indies to invest. The business that was run was a plantation, by growing agro-industrial plants that were selling well in the European region at the time. This research used historical methods to explore the secrets behind the courage of European investors to lease land in the Indies, especially the Oosthoek area. The results of the research proved the success of European investors doing business because of the large role of a research laboratory named Besoekisch Proefstation. From this research, there has been a success in minimizing crop failures which impacted the high profits earned by the investors. Keywords: Besoekisch proefstation; European investor; Oosthoek region

Abstract

This thesis examines the history of Ponoragan wedding customs in Ponorogo Regency in 2008-2019. The purpose of this study is to explain the history of the formation to the inauguration of the Ponoragan bridal custom in Ponorogo Regency and the existence of the Ponoragan bridal custom after it was nationally confirmed by the Central Leadership Council of the Indonesian Bridal Makeup Expert Association (HARPI) "MELATI" in 2017. The method used in this study is a historical method consisting of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The approach used is cultural anthropology with anthropological theory in socio-cultural dynamics put forward by Kingsley Davis. The results of this study indicate that the Ponoragan bridal custom is a new cultural identity inspired by several iconic elements found in Ponorogo Regency, especially the Reyog Ponorogo Art. The early formation of the Ponoragan wedding tradition was inseparable from the influence of Mataraman culture, namely Solo and Yogyakarta. Prior to the existence of the Ponoragan wedding custom, the Ponorogo people wore Solo and Yogyakarta wedding customs. After 2008 the wedding customs used by the Ponorogo people were the Ponoragan wedding customs, the Modern wedding customs, and the Sunda Siger wedding customs. In 2008 Sutji Hariati who was chairman of the HARPI "MELATI" Ponorogo District Leadership Council had aspirations to create a regional bridal custom typical of Ponorogo Regency, then the idea was discussed in monthly meetings with the management of the HARPI "MELATI" Ponorogo District Executive Board with an agenda Excavation of traditional bridal traditions from the Ponorogo Regency area. The Ponoragan bridal custom was nationally confirmed by the HARPI Central Leadership Council "MELATI" in 2017 and won second place in the national level traditional bridal make-up event in the city of Bandung in 2019. Abstract

This research is the dynamics of the Gandrung dance in Afdeling Banyuwangi from 1890-1930. The problem statement in this research is 1. How did the Gandrung Banyuwangi dance appear? 2. How was the condition of the Gandrung Banyuwangi dance in 1890-1930? 3. What influenced the Gandrung dance influence for the Banyuwangi people in 1890-1930 ?The method of this study used the historical method consisting of: heuristic, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The approach used is a socio-cultural one. The analytical tools to obtain the substance needed in the research consist of Homi K Bhabha’s theory of hybridity and Edward W. Said’s theory of orientalism. The resultsshowed there was a change in the art of the Gandrung dance in Afdeling Banyuwangi from 1890-1930. These changes consist of: changes in the function of Gandrung dance from ritual dance to profane dance in performing arts, a change in costumes that significantly converges to the aesthetics of the Gandrung dancer's costume based on the manifestation of the resulting attractiveness, and a change in the musical instruments of the Gandrung dance art orchestra from simple become more complex. Incidentally, the art of the Gandrung dance creates an economic impact on the Gandrung dance artists and society. Politically, the identity bias of the Gandrung Banyuwangi dance is distorted by the profanity of the Gandrung dance from Banyuwangi. Gandrung Poem became a medium for the struggle of Banyuwangi artists to fight Dutch colonialism by using resistance reporting through “gending podo nonton”. The fading of the traditional grip on the Gandrung dance has made this art able to exist in the realm of art. Abstract

Opium is a plant that is included in class 1 narcotics, this plant is a type of annual plant and cannot be cultivated in other areas except in the mountains of the subtropics. During the colonial era, the opium plants in the Dutch East Indies came from several regions, including India, Persia, Turkey and Singapore. In fact, during the Dutch colonial era, opium was not the only imported commodity. Judging from the previous records it is stated that imported goods were transported during the Dutch East Indies colonial administration by using ships with the final route to ports in various regions, including cloth, oil, iron or other goods made from iron. , weapons, candles, liquor and various other items including opium. The opium trade in the Java region began to spread since a binding agreement was obtained between King Amangkurat II and the Dutch, who at that time was led by the VOC, to monopolize the opium trade to the Mataram territory which covered almost the entire island of Java at that time. From what was originally only the aristocratic class, over time it has turned into people of all groups becoming consumers of these goods. The Lasem people were no exception, they were famous for distributing opium, even at that time in the black market trading model. They even earned the nickname as the "dark funnel" of Java as a form of their expertise in distributing these goods. Keywords: Opium; Colonial; Trade; Chinese; Lasem

Abstract

This research aims to explain the dynamics of the women's movement in Makassar City after the Indonesia Proclamation of Independence (1945-1960). During the physical revolution, women participated in the battlefield by involving themselves as nurses, taking care of public kitchens, and being active in the army. Once Indonesia received recognition of sovereignty, women began to form and develop various organizations that were active in the social, economic, educational, cultural, and political fields. In Makassar, female figures such as Emmy Saelan, Siti Mulyati Hasyim, Salawati Daud, and Milda Mathilda Towoliu were recognized. By 1955, some of them were actively involved in the Indonesian parliament. This research relies on historical research by tracing static archives, magazines, and newspapers of the time along with related literature. The research found that the experience during the physical revolution, followed by the regional upheaval in the 1950s, became the background for the women's ideas of unity and love for the motherland, involving themselves in politics in Makassar. Abstract

This article discusses the enactment of Ekadasa Rudra ceremony in 1963 and 1979 in Pura Agung Besakih, Karangasem, Bali. As the greatest Balinese Hindu ceremony held once in a century, the events were substantial and nationally widespread. The noted events in Indonesian history were in 1963 and 1979, it means that the spatial period was less than twenty years. That problem is an interesting topic to discuss. The discussion uses theory of power relation by Foucault and principle in historical research by Kuntowijoyo, these are determining topic, heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The analysis conducts from explaining each moment of Ekadasa Rudra in both years, then the analysis goes on into the discussion of applying theory of power relation to answer the research question. The process of maintaining the existence of the metal music communities in Bandung starts from the spirit of creation which results in music festivals, and compilation albums. In 2008, the existence of the metal music community in Bandung faltered due to the AACC Tragedy which made it difficult for metal bands to perform. The metal music communities in Bandung made it a difficult time to carry out international movements by performing abroad. The movement made an outcome through a program called Wacken Metal Battle Indonesia. The metal music communities in Bandung make their collaborate with Sundanese culture through metal music, which is called Sundanese Metal.
