Abstract

In society, directive illocutionary is very important to establish good communication. Directive speech is used in giving commands, requests, and suggestions to make the hearer do something. This study entitled “Command Directive Illocutionary Performed in Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV Movie” It aims for finding out the command directive illocutionary acts and the context of situation of directive illocutionary acts utterance performed by the main characters and the secondary characters. This study also focusses on finding command illocutionary act that used imperative and declarative as their sentences. The command directive illocutionary acts are discussed using the theory of directive illocutionary acts proposed by Kreidler (1998: 189-190) and the context of situation is discussed using theory of the context of situation proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1985: 12). In collecting the data, the writer watched the movie and noted the utterances that contain command directive illocutionary acts in the movie script. The method used in analysing data was descriptive qualitative method. In presenting the findings, formal and informal methods are used. The formal method is used to show the percentage of sentence structure of command directive illocutionary acts using table and the informal method is used to explain the data descriptively through words. In this study, 21 data were found regarding illocutionary acts of directive command. The finding in the analysis also shows command uttarance that uttered by the characters in the film Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV used declarative sentences and imperative sentences in their uttarances.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the types of Moral Values and the context of the situation when delivering the types of moral values expressed in the film "Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2. Moral values are discussed using the theory of Types of Moral Values proposed by (Audi, 2007), and the context situation is discussed using the situation context theory proposed by (Halliday & Hasan, 1989). In collecting data, the first step is to watch the film and mark the utterances that contain moral values in each scene and film dialogue. The method used in analyzing the data is a qualitative descriptive method. The writer classified the data based on the type of moral values and then analyzed the context of the situation. The author presented the types of moral values in "Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2" the film. The author will use screenshots of scenes with subtitles from the film to analyze moral values and utterances or statements related to moral values that are displayed in bold style. Self Confidence, Respect, and Optimism are more dominantly used by characters in this film than other types.

Abstract

The study aims to identify the many types of figurative language found in Madison Beer's album Life Support. Knickerbocker and Reninger's (1974) theory was employed to determine the figurative language found in Madison Beer's album Life Support. The information was gathered through downloading and listening to each song on the Life Support album, as well as reading up and taking notes on the lyrics. The data were analyzed using a qualitative method. Madison Beer's Life Support album contains eight out of ten types of figurative language, according to the study's findings. There are 12 data in simile, four data in personification, metaphor, irony, and metonymy, three data in synecdoche, and two data in each type of metaphor and paradox. A simile with 12 facts is the most prevalent figurative language used in Madison Beer's Life Support Album.

Abstract

This study focus on the external conflict the minor character faces in “The Martian” movie. External conflict occurs between the character and something outside of himself. External conflicts are divided into three: a conflict between a man, a conflict between man and society, and a conflict between man and nature. This study aims to find out what external conflict the minor character face in the movie faces and how they resolve the conflict. The data for this study were taken from the movie "The Martian" and the screenplay using note-taking techniques. The data were analyzed using qualitative research methods. The theory used is from Kenney (1966:19) and Rahim (2002:81-84). Based on the analysis, found man against man happens mostly in the movie. Further, for handling conflict the main character found mostly is dominating, from 5 types of conflict management: Integrating, obliging, dominating, avoiding, and compromising.

Abstract

This study analyzes the figurative language used in the song lyrics of Adele’s album “30”. The song writer plays words and language to create attraction and distinctiveness towards the lyric of the song. Figurative language has the ability to be more impactful for the readers. This study is aimed to answer two problems of the study, they are: (1) To identify  the types of figurative language used in the song lyrics of Adele's album "30". (2) To analyze the meaning of figurative language found in the song lyrics of Adele's album “30”. The data was analyzed based on the theory of figurative language proposed by Knickerbocker and Reninger (1974) and theory of Meaning proposed by Geoffrey Leech (1974).The result of this study showed there are 7 types of figurative language found in Adele’s album “30”. They are simile, personification, metaphor, synecdoche, hyperbole, irony and paradox. This study found 3 simile, 2 personification, 4 metaphor, 2 synecdoche, 13 hyperbole, 1 irony and 3 paradox. And otherwise in analyzing the contextual meaning this study found some types of meaning used in lyrics of song, those are connotative meaning, thematic meaning, affective meaning, reflected meaning, and stylistic meaning. The data were presented descriptively and formally by using some tables.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the kinds of translation techniques applied in the translation of The Broken Ear comic and how the loss and gain occur. The theory applied was Molina, and Albir's translation strategies (2002) and the concept of loss and gain from Nida’s was also applied in this study. The data of this study were taken from comic entitled The Broken Ear. In collecting the data, the researcher used the observation method by reading, taking note, and classifying the data based on the theories used. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. There are ten types of translation techniques within the highest number was modulation 21, 21% (7 data) and the linguistic compression 21,21% (7). Then, it is followed by amplification that takes 12,12% (4 data), borrowing takes 6,06% (2 data), literal translation takes 3,03% (1 data), calque takes 6,06% ( 2 data), discursive creation takes 6,06% (2), reduction takes 18,18% (6 data). The last lowest percentages occurred were particularization 3, 03% (1), and adaptation 3, 03% (1 data) techniques. Of 33 data in the form of comic, loss of information occurs in the highest percentage, that is 84, 84% (28 data) and the lowest was gain of information takes 15, 15% (5 data).

Abstract

Slang is very informal language or specific words used by a particular group of people. Slang words are usually spoken more often in emails or other written text. This included song lyrics. The study aims to analyze the types of slang and the meaning of slang words from the song lyrics of Katy Perry songs in MTV Unplugged album. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. The selected song lyrics by Katy Perry were chosen as the data source. Descriptive study in textual analysis is applied to elaborate the types and meaning which occur in song lyrics on MTV Unplugged Album. The theory proposed by Partridge (1984) was referred to analyzing the types of the slang words and the theory proposed by Leech (1981) for the meanings of the words. Based on the data were 16 words of society slang, slang in theater have 1 data, cockney slang have 2 data, public house slang have 1 data and 1 data from slang in art. Meanwhile, based on the theory of Leech (1981) this study found conceptual meaning occurred with 14 data, connotative meaning occurred with 6 data, and reflected meaning occurred with 1 data. There is no data that can be classified into social meaning, affective meaning, collocative meaning, and thematic meaning.

Abstract

This study is concerned with analyzing the research entitled The Directives Speech Act Found in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn novel. This research is concerned with identifying the directives speech act used by the characters, how often the types of directives speech act occurred, and which types appeared most frequently in the novel. This research utilized a qualitative method, which is the data were achieved by reading the novel attentively. Five types of directives speech act were discovered in the utterance of the characters in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn novel as a result of this analysis. Those are: warning, forbidding, asking, requesting and telling. The qualitative method was applied to find out the frequency and the types of directive speech act used in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn novel. The researcher found five types: warning 8 data or 10%, forbidding 6 data or 9% , asking 45 data or 57%, requesting 8 data or 10%, and telling 11 data or 14% used in The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn novel. The most frequent type used was asking acts ( 45 utterances or 57% from total data).

Abstract

This study is aimed to analyze the type of idiom in The Addams Family Movie. The data source of this study was taken from The Addams Family Movie transcript. This research used a descriptive qualitative method in analyzing the data. The theory of type of idioms by Seidl & McMordie (1988) was used to analyze the types of idioms found in The Addams Family Movie. As a result there are 9 pieces of data that contain idiom expression. They belong to 4 phrasal verb type (4 data) and 5 key words with idiomatic uses type (5 data).

Abstract

Global warming advertisements are used to invite people to save the earth by reducing the use of plastic, planting trees, etc. that may cause global warming. Verbal and nonverbal communication tools that are used by humans to interact, whether through messages, sounds, pictures, and gestures. This study aims to find out the verbal and non-verbal signs used in global warming advertisements and to analyze the meaning of those signs. The data were taken from the redbubble website on Pinterest. The data were collected by observation method. The analysis was done by the descriptive qualitative method. The study started by analyzing the verbal and non-verbal signs which are based on the theory of semiotics by Saussure (1893). Then, the analysis of the meaning of the verbal and non-verbal signs was done by using the theory of meaning proposed by Barthes (1977). In addition, the study of colors was done using the approach of color term submitted by Wierzbicka (1996). The result of the research shows that global warming advertisements invite and persuade people to avoid the action that will damage nature or the environment and from the advertisement we can find verbal and non-verbal signs and the meaning of an advertisement.
