Abstract

The use of taboo words is prohibited in some places or situations. But even the use of taboo words are prohibited, a lot of people still use them, especially for teenagers. They use taboo words to express their emotion. Taboo words are commonly used in movies or films with comedy genres. The aim of this research is focused on analyzing the type of taboo word that is used by the character in the Me Time movie. The researcher used this film as the data source because it consists of a lot of taboo words used by the characters because this film has a comedy genre. The researcher used an observation method in collecting the data by watching and observing the movie then taking note of the important word. This research used the theory proposed by Batistella (2005) to analyze the data. According to Batistella (2005), there are 4 types of taboo words: Profanity, Epithet, Vulgarity, and Obscenity. The result of this research is that the highest frequency type of taboo word found is Vulgarity with 7 words, and the second is Profanity with 5 words and the third is Obscenity with 2 data and the lowest frequency is Epithet with only one data.

Abstract

This research deals with the psychological aspects of human behavior found in “All Is Lost” movie by Jeffery McDonnell Chandor. This research aims to analyze behavior and identify the psychological aspects of the main character in “All Is Lost” Movie. The data are taken from. Scenes of the movie. The theory used in this paper is the theory of the self-defense mechanism by Sigmund Freud's semium (2006), Anna Freud (1936), and the theory of personality structure by Sigmund Freud in semium (2006). This study used the descriptive qualitative method. The result of this study represented the fourth type of psychological aspect of the main character found in the movie. The dominant type that appears in this research is survival genius. In this study, the data were collected using the observation method. The data were observed using note-taking techniques to identify and analyze the data.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the use of multiple languages in the linguistic landscape of coffee shops in Surakarta City. This research is a descriptive qualitative type conducted in the Surakarta City area. The data used in this study are lingual units on coffee shop signboards in Surakarta City. Meanwhile, the data source in this research is the signboard of coffee shops in Surakarta City. The methods of data provision applied in this research are observation and interview methods. The techniques used in this research are systematically recording and documenting the symptoms that appear on the research object. The data that has been collected will be analyzed using the linguistic landscape analysis method by assessing the frequency of language use on coffee shop signboards. The presentation of data analysis results uses formal and informal descriptive methods. The results show that coffee shop names using multilingualism consist of Indonesian-English, Indonesian-Javanese, Indonesian-Japanese, Indonesian-Arabic, Indonesian-Dutch, Indonesian-German, Javanese-English, English-Sanskrit, English-French, English-Korean, English-Mandarin, English-Spanish, and English-Japanese.

Abstract

This study focused on analyzing the conjunctions, especially additive conjunction and its functions in a novel entitled “The Hobbit” by J. R. R. Tolkien. In this study, Data collection carried out with an observational approach. The data were analyzed by applying qualitative method. The analysis was started by determining the types of conjunction namely additive conjunction in a novel entitled “The Hobbit” by J. R. R. Tolkien. Then, it followed by the analysis of the functions of additive conjunction found in the novel, namely: Simple Additive Relation; or, and, and…to.., Complex Additive Relation (Emphatic); In addition, moreover, furthermore, Complex Additive Relation (De- empathic); By the way, Cooperative Relation; similarly, and Appositive Relation; that is, I mean. Finally, this conjunction has the main function of adding new ideas or facts to a sentence to make it more.

Abstract

Digital media have become an important part of students' learning environments, shaping how learners access information and interpret social realities (Hatlevik et al., 2021; Pangrazio & Sefton-Green, 2022) exposing them not only to educational content but also to ideologically loaded media such as advertisements. Among digital platforms, YouTube plays a significant role in shaping students’ perceptions through its pervasive advertising content. This study investigates how gender representation is constructed in YouTube advertisements and examines its implications for students’ critical literacy in educational contexts. Employing a qualitative descriptive research design, the study analyzes eight YouTube advertisements from diverse product categories using Fairclough’s (1995) Critical Discourse Analysis framework, focusing on textual, discursive, and social practice dimensions. The findings reveal recurring gendered patterns in which home cleaning and domestic products are predominantly associated with female characters, while luxury, automotive, and technology-related products are more frequently represented through male figures. These representations reinforce conventional gender ideologies that link femininity with caregiving, emotional labor, and appearance, and masculinity with agency, productivity, and public success. The study argues that critical literacy practices are essential for raising students’ awareness of gendered social values embedded in digital advertising, enabling them to question dominant representations and develop more inclusive and equitable perspectives on gender.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the pragmatic strategies employed in agreement and disagreement expressions during business negotiations within the hospitality sector in Denpasar. Utilizing the framework of pragmatic theory, specifically speech acts and implicature, this research explores how hospitality business practitioners in Denpasar effectively and politely convey agreement and disagreement in negotiation contexts. Data were collected through direct observation and recording of negotiation conversations involving various stakeholders in the hospitality business, such as hotel managers, suppliers, and travel agents. The findings indicate that the use of appropriate pragmatic strategies, including hedges, indirect statements, and consideration of cultural context, plays a significant role in negotiation success. This research offers valuable insights for hospitality professionals and English language learners to understand the nuances of cross-cultural business communication and enhance effective and polite negotiation skills.

Abstract

This study examines the discrepancy between international and national educational frameworks, specifically the International Standard Classification of Education (ISCED) and the Indonesian Qualification Framework (IQF/KKNI) and their implementation in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) instruction within vocational hospitality education, particularly in restaurant contexts. Although both frameworks emphasize competency-based learning and authentic workplace preparation, classroom practices frequently remain dominated by traditional approaches, including the use of general English textbooks, written examinations, and limited opportunities for authentic communicative practice or technological integration. The lack of specialized ESP training among instructors, combined with institutional resource constraints, further exacerbates this mismatch. As a consequence, many graduates possess theoretical linguistic knowledge but lack the communicative competence required in the hospitality service industry. Addressing this issue requires comprehensive curriculum reform, continuous teacher professional development, simulation-based pedagogical approaches, integration of digital technologies, and stronger collaboration with industry stakeholders. These measures are essential to bridge the gap between educational policy and practical workplace demands in vocational English education.
