Journal of Language and Applied Linguistics (TRAVERSE) is a journal aims to be a peer-reviewed platform and an authoritative source of information. According to Yule (1996: 47), expressives are utterances by speakers that express their mental state, they categorize psychological states and can be in the form of statements of pleasure, pain, dislike, joy and sorrow. This study concerns the expressive illocutionary act used in the After movie. The aim of this study is to analyze the types of expressive illocutionary acts and the context of the situation. This study used a qualitative method to analyze the data and documentation method used in collecting the data found in the movie. The data were taken from the After movie. Based on Searle (1967) and Yule (1962) theory about the types of expressive illocutionary act and supported by theory context of the situation by Halliday and Hasan (1985).

Jargon is a language variety containing a set of unique vocabulary that is used by the people who have the same interest, class (social status), or same position in the same area, for distance in the working area. The purpose of this study is to identify the form and the meaning of jargon used by Mechanic Hold Baggage Screening in I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport. This study uses qualitative methods by using field research. Descriptive study in textual analysis is applied in this study to analyze the form and meaning of jargon through the record of interview with the mechanics. It was analyzed by using the theory from Halingga (2004) that divided the form of jargon and the theory from Leech (1981) about the theory of meaning. The study concluded that there were 12 data (60%) for the word form, 3 data (15%) for the phrase form and 5 data (25%) for the abbreviated form. Acronyms are not used in this community. This percentage is proven if words, phrases and abbreviations are widely used in the data source.

The aim of this study is to find the types of characterization of the main character found in The Dictator movie. This study used the theory proposed by (Kennedy 1996; 28) in analyzing the types of characterization of main character Wellek and Warren (1956) which was used in analyzing the characterization of the main character. The data were qualitatively analyzed and presented descriptively based on theories adopted in this research. The result of this research shows that there are two types of the character namely antagonist and protagonist character. In showing the types of character and characterization of the main character the writer used some dialogue from the movie. There are three aspects of the characterization of the main character found in The Dictator movie. There are physiological dimensions, physiological dimensions, and sociological dimensions.

This study is entitled “Moral Values Reflected by the Main Characters in Heroes (2020) Movie. The aim of this study was to analyze and find out the types of moral value reflected by the main character in Heroes (2020) Movie. This study used the theories proposed by Audi (2007) to analyze the types of moral values and supported the theory by Klarer (2004) to analyze the character. Descriptive qualitative method was used in the data analysis while the method of observation was used to collect the data. The result of this study found that there are 6 data containing moral values occurring in the movie reflected by the main characters as follows. (1) Virtue consists of Courage, Generosity, Honest, and Loyalty (each of types occurred 1 times with 16, 6%), 2) Kantian and Intuitionism and 3) Utilitarianism also occurred 1 times with 16, 6%). The frequency of the appearance of moral values by the main character is balanced.

Characterization is the way that can be used to analyze characters in a movie. This study raises two problems, namely what the types of characters and how is the characterization of the characters from Cruella movie. The theory is taken from Tarigan (1985) and Warren and Wellek (1962). The data source of this research was the movie Cruella by Craig Gillespie. The data were collected through qualitative research method. Observation and note taking are used to collect the data. The result shows that there are 12 characters appear in the movie. Most of the characters have complete aspects of characterization, those are physiological aspect, psychological aspect and sociological aspect. The rest of them only have one or two aspects because they are as supporting characters who appear only several times in the movie.

This study concerns the types of Maxim Violation related to the language that consist in the dialogue of the Little movie. This study used the theory of maxim violation which was proposed by Paul Grice (1975). The method used a qualitative method by following the data with the observation through watching and analyzing the dialogue in characters’ utterances and also reading the dialogue repeatedly and taking notes in the process of analyzing the data. The analysis found the character’s utterances violate maxim types mostly conducted by the main participants or the character in the movie, where the total of data is 32 times of maxim violation. The highest is 11 data or 34,38% violation maxim of quality, followed by 10 data or 31,25% of violation maxim of quantity, 6 data or 18,75% violation of maxim relevance and lastly 5 data or 15, 62% maxim violation of manner

Slang words are non-standard vocabulary either spoken or written. Generally, slang words are spoken by a group of people informally. The goals of this research are to discover the types of slang words and the process of creating slang words found in Blackbear's song lyrics from the Cybersex album. The observation method was used in collecting the data in this study. The descriptive qualitative method was used to analyze the data. Based on the data there were two theories used in analyzing the data, first is theory by Champman (2007) to analyze the types of slang word and theory by Yule (1985) to analyze the process of creating slang word. The result of this study shows that 76% of primary slang and 24% data of secondary slang. In the process of creating slang, this study found 6 types from 9 types process of creating slang, there are blending, clipping, coinage, compounding, acronym, and borrowing.

This study focused in analyzing the illocutionary act found in Justice Movie. The aims of this study are to identify types of illocutionary acts that found in Justice Movie and to analyzed contexts of situation that found in Justice Movie point to the meaning of illocutionary acts. This study employed descriptive and qualitative method. The data of this study were obtained by watching and Note-taking the utterances which contained in illocutionary acts in Justice Movie. The researcher used two theories to analyze the data in this research, the first theory is from Yule (1996) to find out the types of expressive illocutionary acts in the Justice Movie, the second is the theory that proposed by Halliday and Hassan (1989) about the context of situation. There are 13 data of expressive illocutionary act found in Justice Movie such as, complimenting (3), praising (1), sorrow (2), welcome (1), blaming (1), apologizing (2), pleasure (1), dislike (1) and thanking (2).

The aims of this study to classified type of personification in All Things Bright and Beautiful selected songs and their meanings. The theory that is used for this research from Kennedy (1995:677) to analyze the type of personification from the lyrics in the songs, such as: Alligator Sky, Plant Life, Angels, The Real World which lyrics contain with personification in the lyrics. Meanwhile, to describe the meaning contained in the lyrics of the song, this research used theory meaning from Leech (1981:5-9) and used descriptive qualitative method based on context situation. In this study used a table to describe the classification of the data that were analyzed. After classifying the data according to the type of personification and the meanings obtained, it continued by concluding the meaning of lyrics in each selected song. There are several lyrics containing personification found, based on the theory from Kennedy (1995:677) but there were only found 4 types of meaning from 7 types meaning based on the theory of Leech (1981:5-9) they are affective meaning and reflected meaning.

The purpose of this study is to identify the types and analyze the meaning of figurative language that appeared in six songs by The Weeknd. This study used a qualitative method by using two theories. The first theory is about the theory of figurative language by X. J. Kennedy (1979), which is used to identify the types of figurative language in four songs by The Weeknd. Meanwhile, another theory is the theory of meaning by Leech (1981), which is used to analyze the meaning of figurative language in four songs by The Weeknd. The data used in this study was taken from four songs by The Weeknd. In collecting the data, documentation techniques were used in this study. The study's findings indicate that The Weeknd uses four different types of figurative language in four of his songs: simile, personification, hyperbole, and metaphor.There are 8 figurative languages appeared in the song lyrics. one (1) lyric is identified as simile, one lyric (1) is identified as personification, and five (5) lyrics are identified as as hyperbole, and one (1) lyric is identified as metaphor. Hyperbole is the highest dominant type and appears in four of The Weeknd's songs.
