Abstract

Sharia cooperatives in Indonesia have become an important element in the sharia financial system which is based on Islamic values, such as justice, cooperation and equality. The development of sharia cooperatives in Indonesia can be traced to the early 1900s, with the establishment of Baitul Maal Wa Tamwiil (BMT) Insan Kamil in 1992 which marked an important moment in the history of sharia cooperatives in this country. This cooperative was formed to provide financial services in accordance with sharia, by avoiding usury, uncertainty (gharar), and speculation (maysir), which are contrary to Islamic teachings. According to data from the ODS of the Indonesian Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs, the number of Sharia Savings and Loans Cooperatives (KSPS) increased from 3,905 units in 2019 to 4,011 units in 2023. This research examines the developments and challenges faced by sharia cooperatives in Indonesia. The aim of this research is to identify the opportunities and obstacles faced by sharia cooperatives in facing the development of the sharia financial industry in Indonesia. The research method uses descriptive analysis with secondary data from the Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs as well as sharia financial indicators. The research results show that sharia cooperatives have challenges in terms of sharia financial literacy and limited capital. Apart from that, Sharia Cooperatives also have great opportunities with the support of a significant Muslim population and government regulations. The implications of this research are expected to help sharia cooperatives in increasing the competitiveness and sharia financial literacy of their members.

Abstract

The Minasari Koperasi Unit Desa (KUD) has an important role in helping local fishermen increase their income through increasing production capacity and productivity, expanding employment opportunities, and expanding the marketing reach of fishery products. However, in the process KUD Minasari faces several challenges and opportunities that can affect the sustainability and growth of its business. This research aims to analyze the challenges and opportunities faced by KUD Minasari, a fisheries cooperative in Pangandaran Regency. The method used is descriptive qualitative with a field study approach based on primary data obtained through visits, interviews and internal document review. KUD Minasari faces a number of challenges, such as dependence on one business unit, namely the Tempat Pelelangan Ikan (TPI), low technology adoption, and limited digital marketing. Less active member involvement and non-compliance with cooperative rules are also problems that result in slow development of cooperatives. This research also found opportunities for business diversification, increased use of technology, and market expansion through digital marketing strategies. By utilizing the potential of other business units, cooperatives can reduce the risk of dependence on TPI.

Abstract

The implementation of Sharia principles in Koperasi Merah Putih presents significant opportunities to enhance member trust, expand access to Islamic financing, and strengthen governance grounded in fairness and transparency. This study identifies critical challenges, including regulatory disharmony, limited literacy in Sharia contracts, insufficient capacity of Sharia Supervisory Boards, and heightened managerial and financing risks during the transition phase. The analysis reveals that successful implementation requires regulatory harmonization, capacity building for human resources, optimization of Sharia supervisory functions, and integrated risk management. These findings provide strategic insights for developing a sustainable cooperative model that fully embodies Sharia principles in both form and substance.
