Abstract

Background: In the Philippines, students with disabilities continue to face challenges in higher education, including limited accessibility, lack of initiatives, and insufficient health support. These issues affect not only their academic performance but also their overall well-being. While national laws advocate for disability inclusion, there remains a limited body of localized research exploring the lived experiences of differently-abled students in university settings, particularly regarding their health-related needs and accessibility to student services. This study aimed to examine the lived experiences of differently-abled students at the Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology (NEUST) and use their insights as a basis for developing university-based health programs tailored to their specific needs. Method: The researchers used a qualitative phenomenological approach, involving semi-structured interviews with eleven (11) differently-abled students across two (2) NEUST campuses. Through purposive sampling, participants were selected, and data were analysed using thematic analysis to extract recurring patterns and core experiences. Results: Five major themes emerged, including Health Behind the Hallways, Learning through Limits, Belonging Matters, Voices from the Journey towards Campus Readiness, and Building Better Spaces. Conclusion: The findings highlight opportunities for the Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology (NEUST) to consider enhancing health services, improving campus accessibility, and establishing more inclusive support systems to create a more conducive learning environment for differently abled students. These efforts are crucial for creating equitable educational environments where all students, regardless of their abilities, can thrive.

Abstract

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is a critical life-saving procedure in the management of cardiac arrest. High-quality chest compressions significantly determine the effectiveness of CPR, including adequate depth, rate, and consistency. Rescuer stability plays a crucial role in maintaining compression quality, and the use of a footrest may help maintain ergonomic posture, reduce fatigue, and enhance the effectiveness of chest compressions. This study aims to analyse the effect of footrest use on the quality of chest compressions during CPR simulation among professional nursing students at Kusuma Husada University Surakarta. This research employed a quasi- experimental design with a post-test only control group approach. A total of 44 participants were selected using purposive sampling, with inclusion criteria of having received CPR training and possessing a normal body mass index (BMI). Observational instruments were used based on the five indicators of CPR quality according to the 2020 AHA guidelines: depth, rate, hand placement, interruptions, and chest recoil. The sample was divided into experimental and control groups. The results showed that CPR quality with the use of a footrest was predominantly in the high category (90%) compared to those without a footrest (81.8%). The Mann- Whitney test (p= .000) indicated a significant effect of footrest use on the quality of chest compressions. Further research is recommended under actual clinical conditions.

Abstract

People with pulmonary tuberculosis often experience ventilation disorders due to lung tissue damage, leading to decreased elasticity and increased airway resistance. This condition reduces tidal volume and disrupts gas exchange and oxygenation. One nonpharmacological intervention that can help improve tidal volume is deep breathing exercise, which enhances lung ventilation and oxygenation. This study aimed to analyze the effect of deep breathing exercise on tidal volume in pulmonary tuberculosis patients at the Main Clinic of Purwokerto Community Lung Health Class A. A quasi-experimental design with one group pre-test and post-test was used, involving 28 patients in the intensive phase selected through total sampling. The intervention was conducted for three days. Tidal volume was measured via interactive video calls at the patients' homes using balloons and calculated with the formula V = ?r²t. Each session was measured three times, and the highest value was recorded. The mean tidal volume increased from 2834.32 ml before intervention to 5365.00 ml after. Wilcoxon test results showed a p-value of 0.001, indicating a significant difference. In conclusion, deep breathing exercise is effective in increasing tidal volume in pulmonary tuberculosis patients and can be considered a supportive therapy.

Abstract

Electronic Medical Records (EMR) are a component of the hospital management information system (SIMRS) that is currently being developed. The complexity of the challenges in implementing EMRs necessitates a readiness assessment before they are fully implemented. This is an important step to help identify procedures, levels of importance, and to accommodate the formation of operational functions that support the optimization of EMR implementation. One of the methods that can be used to analyze the readiness for implementing information systems based on EMRs is the Doctor’s Office Quality-Information Technology (DOQ-IT) method. The implementation of EMRs at Mitra Siaga Hospital in Tegal began in April 2024, but it has not yet been fully executed. This study aims to determine the readiness for implementing outpatient EMRs at Mitra Siaga Hospital Tegal using the DOQ-IT approach. This is a descriptive quantitative study with 32 subjects, consisting of IT staff, medical record officers, doctors, and nurses. The results of the study indicate that the readiness for implementing outpatient EMRs at Mitra Siaga Hospital Tegal using the DOQ-IT approach falls into the "very ready" category. Based on the research findings, it is recommended that Mitra Siaga Hospital Tegal continue to monitor, evaluate, and periodically review the implementation of EMRs, as there may still be challenges or obstacles during the implementation process.

Abstract

Acne is a common skin problem that occurs among teenagers and adults, often caused by bacterial activity on facial skin that becomes blocked due to the accumulation of oil and dirt. Cutibacterium acnes is one of the bacteria that can infect the skin and trigger acne formation. Synconine is an alkaloid compound that has been proven to inhibit the activity of gram-positive bacteria; therefore, it was formulated into an ointment preparation. An important component in ointment formulations is the base, which functions as a carrier to deliver the drug to its site of action and achieve the desired pharmacological effect. This study aimed to optimize the PEG 400 and PEG 4000 bases in synconine ointment formulations. The optimum concentration was determined using the disc diffusion method for antibacterial activity testing, while formula optimization was carried out using Design Expert® software version 13 with the Simplex Lattice Design method. The results showed that the optimum concentration obtained was 1.5%, producing an inhibition zone of 13.26 mm, which falls into the moderate category (10–15 mm). The optimum ointment formula was achieved with a PEG 400 concentration of 30% and PEG 4000 of 60%, with a desirability value of 0.911. In conclusion, synconine compounds demonstrated potential antibacterial activity against Cutibacterium acnes, and formula optimization using the Simplex Lattice Design method with variations of PEG 400 and PEG 4000 significantly influenced viscosity, spreadability, adhesion, and pH responses of the ointment preparation.

Abstract

BPJS Kesehatan (Indonesia's National Health Insurance Agency) claims refer to the process of submitting health service costs to BPJS Kesehatan, which requires complete administrative, medical, and coding documentation. Pending claims occur due to discrepancies or incomplete documents, causing delays in payments and hospital cash flow. This study aims to identify the factors causing pending inpatient claims at Ajibarang Regional Public Hospital based on the elements of Man, Money, Material, Machine, Method, Motivation, and Media. Using a qualitative descriptive method with a case study approach, data was collected through in-depth interviews with the Head of the Medical Records Unit, internal verifiers, and coding officers, as well as a documentation study of pending claims in 2024. Data analysis applied the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, which involves data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. Results revealed that out of 17,892 inpatient claims in 2024, 2,109 claims (11.79%) were pending. The primary cause was coding issues (54%), followed by administrative issues (29%) and medical issues (17.1%). Dominant factors included inaccurate diagnosis coding, incomplete documentation, differences in perception between physicians and BPJS verifiers, and technical system barriers. In conclusion, the causes of pending inpatient claims were mainly related to coding issues, followed by administrative and medical problems. Enhancements can be made through improved staff accuracy, coordination, and optimized information systems for smoother claim processing.
