Abstract

This research originates from the increasing environmental degradation on Lombok Island and studies of ecospiritualism within Buddhist communities in Dusun Tebango and Jeliman Ireng as an alternative solution based on local wisdom. It aims to analyze the concept of ecospiritualism, its transmission, and the implications of ecospiritual values on community life, and their implementation in sustainable development. The study adopts a qualitative method with an ethnographic approach, utilizing semi-structured interviews, non-participant observation, and documentation, which are analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model. The results indicate that the community understands ecospiritualism as the sacredness of nature that is in harmony with humanity and the spiritual dimension. These values are transmitted orally and through religious practices and traditions, thus forming the collective experience of the community. In the context of sustainable development, ecospiritualism serves as a moral foundation that shapes social and cultural behavior and environmental awareness, as reflected in efforts at natural conservation, respect for the sources of life, and the maintenance of local traditions that preserve the balance between humans and nature. These research findings indicate that ecospiritualism functions as an important foundation for sustainable development rooted in local wisdom.

Abstract

Character education increasingly draws on religious and contemplative practices, yet how repeated ritual practice becomes internalized as character remains underexplored. This study examines character formation through chanting practice among students at the Institut Nalanda Jakarta dormitory by integrating Kelman’s theory of attitude change with the Abhidhamma perspective. Using a qualitative phenomenological design, data were gathered through in-depth interviews with six purposively selected students, participant observation, and documentation, and analyzed interpretively. The findings show that chanting fosters character development through three processes: compliance, identification, and internalization. Students first participate because of institutional norms, then build social bonds through shared participation, and finally internalize the values as personally meaningful. From the Abhidhamma perspective, this transformation is interpreted through citta and cetasika, which underpin mindfulness, self-control, and ethical conduct. The study proposes an Attitude Change Pyramid modelling the movement from external practice to internalized character, offering a transferable lens for religiously grounded character education.

Abstract

The digital era demands new approaches to cultural preservation, including the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage such as the Malangan mask dance of Malang Regency. This study examines how Generation Z engages with and processes digitalized Malangan mask content on social media, using the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM). Content was published on two dummy accounts (@topeng_ngalaman on Instagram and TikTok) and evaluated through a mixed-methods design combining a questionnaire of 22 Generation Z respondents with qualitative thematic analysis. Addressing the gap left by prior promotion-focused research, the study proposes a five-indicator content model content creativity, cultural narrative, audience engagement, information accessibility, and media optimization. The results show that content creativity and cultural narrative most strongly influenced engagement, yet most respondents followed the peripheral route, showing shallow elaboration of cultural–religious meaning. The findings indicate that digital preservation must move beyond visual appeal and algorithmic reach toward deliberate support for meaning-making and value transmission. As an exploratory pilot study with a small convenience sample (n = 22), the findings are indicative rather than generalizable.

Abstract

A global wave of digital feminism has emerged, and the slogan “My Body, My Rules (abbreviated MBMR)” has spread widely across social platforms including TikTok and Instagram. However, after this discourse entered Indonesia’s Muslim communities, it required reinterpretation through integration with three core Islamic values: amanah, iffah, and maslahah, and the framing of bodily autonomy thus generated cross-cultural tensions. The author team of this paper centered their research on the core question of how Muslim women aged 20 to 40 in Jakarta negotiate and address this tension. Under a qualitative research framework, the study adopted a dual-path approach combining semi-structured interviews with digital discourse analysis. The study found that participants developed a form of negotiated agency, and that social media holds the dual attribute of being both an empowerment space and an arena for ideological contestation. This study supplements relevant research outcomes in the field of communication studies, proving that after localization, global feminist discourse can generate a hybrid agency that integrates individual empowerment and religious responsibility, and reshape the identity construction logic of contemporary digital communication.
