Abstract

This research is motivated by the existing disparities in access to and quality of Islamic education in Kendari City. In this context, the establishment of Muhammadiyah educational institutions becomes crucial to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education). This study employs a descriptive qualitative design, with research sites located in several Muhammadiyah schools and madrasahs in Kendari City. The participants include school principals, teachers, administrators of the Muhammadiyah regional boards, and students. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. The findings reveal that the existence of Muhammadiyah in the field of Islamic education in Kendari contributes to the realization of SDG 4 on Quality Education through four key aspects: (1) the establishment of educational institutions, (2) the improvement of community education, (3) the promotion of moderate and progressive Islamic education through inclusive Muhammadiyah schools, and (4) the integration of Muhammadiyah education with the objectives of SDG 4. This suggests that strengthening the quality of Muhammadiyah education in Kendari requires a collaborative approach involving the organization, the government, and the community. Such collaboration should be accompanied by innovations in financing, management, and human resource development to ensure the sustainable achievement of the goals of providing equitable and high-quality Islamic education.

Abstract

The increasing prevalence of online gambling addiction among young children demands a preventive strategy that is both spiritually grounded and culturally contextualized. This study proposes the integration of Qur’anic Parenting, Digital Literacy, and local Cultural Values as a comprehensive approach to this issue. Qur’anic Parenting emphasizes moral and spiritual development rooted in Islamic teachings, while Digital Literacy enhances children's ability to engage safely and critically with digital platforms. Crucially, cultural values such as gotong royong—as embodied in the traditional Bugis practice of Maccerak Parek in Tanjung Jabung Timur, Jambi—highlight collective responsibility and mutual assistance within the community. In this tradition, the spirit of cooperation transcends familial boundaries and fosters communal vigilance, making it a valuable social mechanism in monitoring and guiding children's behavior. The synergy of these three domains provides a holistic and culturally embedded model to protect children from the harmful impact of online gambling.

Abstract

This article explores the concept of psychological well-being for the elderly according to Abu Hamid Muhammad al-Ghazali, highlighting the psychological problems of contemporary seniors. In old age, individuals often face loneliness, reduced social roles, loss of meaning in life, and anxiety about death. These conditions indicate that well-being cannot be adequately explained through physical or social aspects alone, but also requires an understanding that touches on the spiritual dimension. In modern psychology, well-being is usually understood through self-acceptance, positive relationships, autonomy, life purpose, and personal growth. However, although spirituality is taken into account, it has not yet gained a complete position in the theoretical framework. Al-Ghazali offers a Sufi framework that emphasizes that true well-being (sa'ādah) is rooted in four pillars: ma'rifat al-Nafs, ma'rifat allah, ma'rifat al-'Ālam, and ma'rifat al-Ākhirat. Using a qualitative method based on philosophical-textual studies, this research found that the psychological well-being of the elderly is an integrative process that encompasses psychological, moral, and spiritual dimensions with a transcendental orientation as the main foundation.

Abstract

This article examines how the values of modern boarding schools are integrated into the curriculum of Kulliyyatu-l-Mu'allimāt al-Islāmiyah (KMI) at Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor Putri, as well as how these strategies shape the character of students. Values such as sincerity, simplicity, independence, Islamic ukhuwah, and freedom serve as the foundation of education, integrated into the formal learning process and the life of a 24-hour Islamic boarding school. This study uses a descriptive, qualitative approach grounded in the literature and data validation through source triangulation. The results of the study show that the KMI curriculum is an integrated curriculum that combines religious and general lessons in proportion and is implemented through active learning strategies, direct instruction, strict supervision, and character development through teacher examples. Thus, the integration of modern boarding school values is not only part of the academic structure but also transforms into a character-education system that shapes students into tough, intelligent, and noble individuals.

Abstract

This study aims to examine in depth the three basic principles of leadership: integrity, Authenticity, and commitment to something greater than oneself as foundational elements of effective leadership within the context of Islamic education. These principles are not only moral guidelines but also ethical and existential frameworks that shape a leader’s character and behavior. This research employs a qualitative research design with an interpretive approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with Islamic education leaders (kiai, school principals, and senior teachers), participant observation in selected Islamic educational institutions, and document analysis of leadership texts and institutional policy documents. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns and meanings embedded in leadership practices within Islamic educational settings. The findings reveal that integrity serves as the core pillar that establishes public trust in leaders. Authenticity plays a crucial role in sustaining moral consistency and personal honesty. At the same time, a commitment to a purpose beyond oneself motivates leaders to act in the collective good rather than their own self-interest. In the context of Islamic education, these principles align strongly with the values of amanah, siddiq, and khidmah, which characterize the leadership exemplified by the Prophet Muhammad SAW. This study concludes that the three principles are not only compatible with modern leadership theories but are also universal and highly relevant to the development of Islamic educational leadership. The study implies the need to develop leadership training programs in Islamic education that emphasize character formation and leadership ethics based on these three core principles.

Abstract

This research aims to explore the implementation of curriculum design and the applied curriculum development model in two Ma’had Aly institutions. Grounded in the theories of Allan C. Ornstein, Francis P. Hunkins, Jhon P. Miller, Wayne Seller, Robert S. Zais, and Richard A. Gorton, this study adopts a multi-case qualitative approach. Data were obtained through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis, and then processed using three stages: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal two major contributions. First, the curriculum design integrates four models: subject-centered, learner-centered, problem-centered, and book-centered design. The inclusion of the book-centered model offers a critical addition to Ornstein and Hunkins' framework. Second, the curriculum development process reflects a hybrid between administrative and grassroots models, supported by four orientations: transmission, transaction, transformation, and transcendence. The transcendence orientation, overlooked by Miller and Seller, emerges as a distinctive value in pesantren education, emphasizing spiritual depth. These findings imply theoretical refinements, extending and correcting earlier models by incorporating pesantren-specific values. Thus, this study contributes significantly to the discourse on Islamic higher education by providing a contextualized and integrative curriculum framework that balances traditional pesantren heritage with contemporary educational paradigms.

Abstract

Cultural preservation is a crucial effort to maintain national identity while confronting the challenges of globalization, which have the potential to erode local wisdom values. This study aims to map the development of academic studies on cultural preservation, particularly regarding local wisdom, youth generation, and the Seren Taun ceremony. The method used is bibliometric analysis with Publish or Perish (PoP), collecting data from Google Scholar for the period 2015–2025. Eighty articles were analyzed using VOSviewer to generate three types of visualizations: network, overlay, and density. The results show a significant upward trend in publications, with the highest number in 2025. Network visualization analysis identified four main clusters dominated by cultural heritage, local wisdom, community, and tradition, while Seren Taun appeared fragmented. The overlay visualization showed that the issues of the youth generation and Seren Taun emerged prominently during 2023–2025, indicating a shift in research focus. Density visualization represented high density in Indonesia, local wisdom, and Seren Taun, but the involvement of the youth generation and the term cultural preservation remained restricted. These findings identify a research gap in the roles of youth in cultural preservation, specifically in the context of the Seren Taun ceremony. This study is expected to provide an overview of the research map and direction for the development of more participatory and contextual cultural research in the future.

Abstract

This study examines the curriculum supervision system at Islamic boarding school Taḥfīẓul Qur’an (PPTQ) Al-Madinatul Kamilah Sidoarjo, which integrates professionalism and spirituality within Islamic and cultural values. The research aims to develop a Value-Based and Culturally-Rooted Supervision Model that enhances both educational quality and teachers’ spiritual growth. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through observation, interviews, and direct supervision, then analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model with triangulation. Findings reveal that supervision functions as a form of tarbiyah (nurturing), not administrative control. The process—through ḥalaqah observation, daily monitoring, weekly reflection, and spiritual coaching—emphasizes sincerity, discipline, and moral integrity. Rooted in uswah ḥasanah, iḥtirām, amānah, and ukhuwwah, this model fosters a non-hierarchical, reflective learning culture. It synthesizes managerial rationality and prophetic spirituality, showing that effective supervision is measured not by performance compliance but by spiritual and ethical transformation.

Abstract

This study addresses the limited effectiveness of conventional, ten-session, lecture-centric Hajj Manasik for pilgrims of diverse ages and schooling by evaluating a year-round manasik program at KUA Somba Opu (Gowa). Methods used a descriptive design combining observation, interviews, and pre–post questionnaires in 2022 with 107 participants (of 163) and 15 instructors; measures covered understanding of pillars, obligations, procedures, and timing, plus perceived benefits and barriers through an andragogical lens. The Results of this study show comprehension rose markedly. "Novice" fell from 47% to 17.5% and "limited" from 30% to 11.7%, while "good" increased from 14% to 49% and "ready/independent" from 7% to 22%. The most effective formats were field practice (ṭawāf, sa'i, ramy al-jamarāt), cohort-based learning, and guided Q&A; Pure lectures performed weakest. Barriers included uneven instructor qualifications, budget constraints, inadequate teaching aids, and thin coverage of end-to-end travel. The program effectively builds competence; we recommend standardized curricula, instructor recruitment and training, upgraded facilities, and wider implementation across KUAs.
