Abstract

This article examines how Sunni historiography is taught through the sīrah nabawiyah curriculum at Ma’had Aly Sa’iidusshiddiqiyah Jakarta, a pesantren-based higher education institution specializing in Prophetic biography. Drawing on Paul Ricoeur’s concept of historiography as a “textual operation,” the study analyzes syllabi and seven prescribed textbooks (2023–2027) as institutional instruments that transmit and filter Sunni collective memory. Data were collected through textual analysis, short semi-structured interviews with curriculum implementers, thematic coding, and focused takhrīj of selected reports. The findings show that 62 of 160 credits (≈39%) are devoted to sīrah studies, indicating the centrality of Prophetic history in shaping Sunni identity. The curriculum favors a linear historical narrative, a moral-theological framework, and reverence for authoritative Sunni scholars and transmitters. A notable example is the treatment of Razīyyat Yawm al-Khamīs, a significant historical report that appears in only one of the seven prescribed textbooks despite its prominence in classical sources. This suggests institutional selectivity regarding reports sensitive to Sunni–Shiʿi historiographical debates. The study argues that contemporary pesantren higher education sustains Sunni historical narratives primarily through curricular control over what is taught and reproduced as orthodox knowledge. It concludes by advocating greater curricular diversity through new theoretical frameworks and critical methodologies.

Abstract

Friday sermons play a strategic role in shaping public religious understanding among Muslim communities. This study analyzes the collaborative governance of Friday sermons as an instrument for strengthening religious moderation in two urban mosques in Surabaya, namely Masjid Al-Falah and Masjid Ar-Rahmah. Using a qualitative comparative case study, data were collected through in-depth interviews with mosque administrators, media managers, and congregants, supported by documentation of mosque digital media practices. The data were analyzed through condensation, display, coding, thematic categorization, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal four interconnected dimensions of sermon governance: structural, cultural, substantive, and digital collaboration. These dimensions appear in preacher selection, theme confirmation, sensitivity to congregational characteristics, moderation of sermon content, digital production, and mitigation of sensitive issues. The study concludes that religious moderation in Friday sermons is achieved through collaborative mosque governance that involves administrators, preachers, media teams, and congregants.

Abstract

In the context of contemporary Muslim society, mosques can no longer be understood merely as places of worship, but also as socio-religious institutions with the potential to play a role in local economic development. This article aims to analyze the role of the Nurul Jannah Petrokimia Gresik Mosque as an actor in local economic development and to explain the contribution of mosque-based economic programs to strengthening the livelihoods of the surrounding community. This study employs a qualitative approach using a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with mosque administrators and supported MSME operators, observations, and documentation, and were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study indicate that the Nurul Jannah Mosque plays an active role in transforming informal economic activities into a more structured business ecosystem through the provision of business spaces, the mobilization of institutional resources, facility support, promotion, and relatively organized program management. This program is built on a hybrid resource configuration—a combination of corporate assets, community contributions, and institutional management by the mosque. Research findings also indicate that the program’s contribution to community livelihoods is tangible, though not uniform. For some business owners, this program expands market access, increases revenue, and supports business expansion; however, for others, the primary benefits are more evident in the stability of business operations, legal compliance, convenience, and the sustainability of economic activities. This article emphasizes that mosques can function as intermediary institutions that connect religious values, local resources, and community economic needs within a framework of community development that is more organized, adaptive, and sustainable

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the collaborative Islamic education learning model based on local culture in strengthening the social character of students in Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 2 Gorontalo Regency. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques in the form of observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawn. The results of the study show that collaborative learning based on local culture is applied through group discussions, social projects, and reflection on Islamic values that are integrated with the local culture of Gorontalo, especially the value of huyula which emphasizes cooperation, empathy, and responsibility. This model contributes to increasing student learning participation while strengthening social character, such as tolerance, solidarity, and social concern. The strengthening is supported by the culture of mutual cooperation and madrasah leadership in creating a conducive learning environment. This study confirms that the collaborative Islamic Education learning model based on local culture is effective in integrating cognitive, affective, social, and spiritual aspects to shape the social character of students in madrasah.

Abstract

This paper revisits the hadith of the wife prostrating herself to her husband in the light of Contemporary Islamic Education and Muslim family culture. This hadith is often cited in marriage sermons, family religious gatherings, and premarital guidance, but is often taken literally, which can reinforce unequal marital relations. This study uses qualitative library research, including takhrij al-hadith, i’tibar al-sanad, criticism of the sanad, criticism of the matan, and contextual analysis. The results indicate that the hadith reported by al-Tirmidhi is hasan li dhatihi: its chain is connected, most of its narrators are trustworthy, and the weakness of Muhammad ibn ‘Amr is supported by other routes. The Matan analysis shows that the wording is hypothetical and not a literal command to the wives to prostrate, but an affirmation that prostration is only for Allah. This study emphasizes the significance of hadith literacy as a basis for establishing a Muslim family on the principles of tawhid, mutual responsibility, mutual respect, and justice in the discourse and practice of Islamic education today.

Abstract

The study investigates the egalitarian-transformative communication of mosque managers across varied metropolitan contexts to sustain congregational unity. The study is prompted by disputes among congregations from different Islamic traditions, especially the Nahdlatul Ulama, Muhammadiyah, and Salafi organizations, in which differences in ritual preferences may underpin opposing claims to mosque identity. Data was collected through a qualitative case study approach, employing in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis. The results show that harmony is not maintained through standardized religious practices, but through recognition of differences, creation of dialogical spaces, equitable distribution of religious roles, and informal daily communication. Mosque leadership is not just an administrative authority but also a cultural mediator, negotiating symbols, mitigating potential disputes, and fostering congregational interaction. Egalitarian-transformative communication is presented as a methodology for managing intra-Muslim difference and improving social cohesion in metropolitan mosque communities.
