Abstract

ABSTRACT This research tries to analyze nonverbal communication types employed by native speaker teachers when teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classes and the effect of those nonverbal communications on students. This study employed descriptive methodology. Two native-speaking teachers in English and fifteen students comprise the study's participants. Observation and interviews were utilized to acquire data. This study found that teachers frequently employ six types of nonverbal communication. These included the application of kinesics, proxemics, ocelusics, chronemics, paravocalics, and physical appearance. The data analysis also revealed that the teachers’ nonverbal communication had both good and bad effects on the pupils. The teachers’ use of appropriate hand gestures, eye contact, and voice emotion when teaching the topic significantly helped to develop healthy teacher-student relations, particularly in motivating and appreciating students. However, eye contact can induce anxiety in students. Keywords: Nonverbal Communication, Effects of Nonverbal Communication, EFL Classroom, Native Speaker Teacher

Abstract

ABSTRACT Students needed to gain comprehension of the material to participate in reading activities. Many students still struggled to read English-language texts, nevertheless. They encountered unfamiliar words regularly. Consequently, contextual guessing and project-based learning emerged as a method that students may use to deduce the text. The goals of this study were to: (1) ascertain how students felt about using the technique to raise their reading comprehension levels; and (3) look into the challenges that students faced when using the technique to understand the text. An explanatory sequential design with mixed methodologies was employed in the study. The instruments included an open-ended interview, a closed-ended questionnaire, and a multiple-choice exam. Thirty-two students from one of the junior high schools in Cimahi served as the research subjects. These two conclusions are the result of this research: The use of the contextual guessing technique and project-based learning had an impact on students' reading comprehension, according to the following findings: (1) the questionnaire data; and (2) the interview data, which indicated that students' positive responses to the use of the contextual guessing technique in teaching reading comprehension were based on two factors: (1) a lack of vocabulary and (2) weak English proficiency.

Abstract

This study investigates students' responses to utilizing discovery learning using PowToon for writing recount texts. The students' responses include four variables from Muhlisin (2018): attention, relevance, confidence, and satisfaction. Moreover, the challenges encountered by students are also examined. This research utilizes a descriptive qualitative approach. This research focuses on tenth-grade students from a vocational high school in Cimahi. Data is gathered through questionnaires, tests, and interviews. The findings indicated that the research was well-received by the students. The methodology and instructional materials facilitated the student's comprehension of the course, leading to increased motivation in producing a well-written recount text. The integration of PowToon in teaching recount text had a favorable response from the students. They continued to have difficulties in grammar and vocabulary, as indicated by the low scores on the test results. The assessment labels most students' writing exam results as good or high percentages. The study determined that students comprehend the topic effectively using the discovery learning approach and PowToon. Keywords: challenge; discovery learning; recount text, response; writing

Abstract

The Philippines comprises 7, 641 islands and with it, an approximately 170 languages spoken by almost 104 million Filipinos. Because of this, Filipinos are naturally bi/multilingual. Bilingualism is also a widely studied topic in the field of language education. In this study, however, a narrative inquiry is used to determine the advantages, disadvantages, strategies and views of the subject towards bilingualism. The subject’s life narrative being bilingual was written based on the result of the interview and an unstructured questionnaire. From the data, codes were extracted and were discussed in the paper. The experience of the participant is a mirror of the linguistic experience of Filipinos where children acquire their mother tongue used in their communities. Then at a very young age, they also learn another language, almost always Filipino because this is what is used in Philippine schools. A conscious effort is then used to learn English, the second language of the country. Other languages learned are either for personal or practical reasons. It is indeed very difficult for the general public to get by without knowing English these days.

Abstract

This study aims to explore Elizabeth Gilbert's repertoire on the island of Bali in the novel Eat, Pray, Love and to reveal what Elizabeth Gilbert wants to convey through the novel. Eat, Pray, Love tells the story of Gilbert's journey in seeking inner peace in three countries, namely Italy, India, and Indonesia where each country gives her a different aspect of life. This research focuses on Elizabeth Gilbert's repertoire on her trip to the island of Bali in terms of Wolfgang Iser's Aesthetic Response theory. The data source of this research is a novel by Elizabeth Gilbert which was published in 2006 by Viking Penguin, USA. This research was conducted by tracing the reality of terrorism that had occurred in America in 2001 and in Bali in 2002 as the background. The data collection technique was carried out by reading notes accompanied by a careful and thorough recording of the entire novel related to Elizabeth Gilbert's repertoire. This research technique is carried out through the following steps: reading, identification, classification, interpretation, and inference. The results of this study are not directed at static and absolute meanings, but meanings that continue to move according to the expectations of each reader. Thus, science will continue to roll as the process of reading each at different times and socio-cultural realities.

Abstract

Literacy is crucial for the height of a nation’s civilization. However, Indonesia’s literacy rate is still regarded as poor. To address the problem, Kemdikbud creates Kamjar (Kampus Mengajar), a program for college students to help relieve literacy issues in rural areas. Given that many students in remote areas are still illiterate despite having reached school age, the study created reading clinics to encourage students to learn to read by embracing personalized learning principles. Its purpose is to find out how one-on-one reading clinics can assist students who struggle with reading. Four students of an elementary school in Lembang West Jave were selected to participate in the study. Each one has a different age, personality, and different literacy skills. The instructions for those four students were created in such a way as to satisfy their needs. Employing a case study as the design of the research, the study utilized observation and interviews as data collection. The result of the study showed that one-on-one reading clinic can act as a good strategy for helping inconsistent struggling readers. However, collaboration with other peers is still needed to help the beginning readers assess their achievements, agency, and ownership over their learning.

Abstract

A Song is a good medium for children to learn about culture. Through songs, songwriters can convey their native culture, which they regard as valuable for future generations to inherit. There are several songs for children in Indonesia written by talented songwriters that portray the distinctive qualities of Indonesia’s culture. For the listeners to recognize the Indonesian virtues implied in the songs while simultaneously enjoying the songs, the songwriters demonstrated some strategies that allowed them to convey the intended culture. This study attempted to determine how songwriters managed to pass culture through songs and what culture they tried to convey. A semiotic analysis, including textual analysis, thematic progression, and sign analysis, was conducted on five popular songs for children from four well-known songwriters in Indonesia. The results showed that the songwriters utilized the material process to help the children visualize the content of the songs and used existential phrases and a variety of marked themes, including conditions, adjuncts, and dependent themes, to convey many key points in a single sentence. In addition, the songwriters also employed a combination of multiple thematic progressions to develop the subject, zigzag thematic development to maintain the text's logical relation, and reiterative thematic progression to emphasize the theme of the text. The findings are valuable as references, especially for those who wish to write music for young listeners

Abstract

Effective communication is crucial in education as it plays a pivotal role in fostering student engagement and participation in the classroom. Students encounter numerous challenges when engaging with teachers, particularly in English classes. They must exert greater focus and be more proactive in the learning process to comprehend the information, which hinders their ability to remain engaged and actively participate. Researchers aim to explore questioning strategies and cold-calling techniques to enhance students' comprehension, increase their engagement in the learning process, and create avenues for them to articulate their viewpoints using cold-calling approaches facilitated by the teacher. This study aims to analyze how students react to the combination of the questioning method and cold calling in a collaborative setting. The study employed the qualitative descriptive method as its research approach and design. The research findings demonstrated that integrating the questioning method and cold calling was not beneficial in facilitating the development of practical lessons. It was evident from the shift in class dynamics observed after the study. Conversely, cold calling continues to pressure students, causing them to lose concentration on class issues. Implementing questioning and cold-calling strategies in the classroom yields distinct effects. There were two opposing situations in which students attempted to maintain their focus to respond to the teacher's questions while also experiencing anxiety simultaneously.
