Abstract

This study aims to gather data from public and private primary school parents located in the urban, suburban, and rural areas that would contribute to understanding parental roles regarding fully online learning for their children during COVID-19. We also discussed several parents’ self-identified issues on their ability to participate in their children’s fully online learning experiences. A qualitative study was employed as the methodological basis for eliciting 12 parents whose children in 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade attending conventional learning before school closure due to the pandemic. The semi-structured interview was conducted, and verbatim transcripts were analyzed using inductive and thematic analysis approaches. Four major themes were identified from parents’ role during home learning, including organizing and managing, mentoring and instructing, facilitating, and motivating children learning. Online learning relied on how active parents engage and maintain children’s interaction with learning content, teachers, and peers to familiarise their children with online educational settings successfully. However, personal issues arise, which can be stressful as teaching young learners virtually need special attention. Having significant responsibilities to their children learning, parents disclosed key issues and struggled, resulting in a rapid move from face-to-face to online instructions; learning value, learning efficiency, mental and physical health, accessibility.

Abstract

Accommodating learners’ individual differences including personalities and language learning strategies is important in implementing the learner-centred instruction. This current research investigated the correlation of EFL learners’ Big Five personalities, language learning strategies, and speaking skills. It tried to answer the questions if there is (a) any correlation between the EFL learners’ Big Five personalities and speaking skills, (b) any correlation between the EFL learners’ learning strategies and speaking skills, and (c) any correlation between the predictor variables (EFL learners’ Big Five personalities and language learning strategies) and the criterion variable (speaking skills). This present study involved 357 students from 3 senior high schools in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, academic year 2018/2019. The data were obtained through questionnaires and speaking test. The data were analysed using statistical analysis through correlational and regression tests to answer the research questions. The results revealed that there was no significant correlation found between the EFL learners’ Big Five personalities and speaking skills (Sig. (2tailed)=0.464>alpha level 0.05), between the learners’ language learning strategies and speaking skills (Sig. (2tailed)=0.575>alpha level 0.05), and between the predictor variables and criterion variables (Sig. (2tailed)=0.712>alpha level 0.05). These results showed that other variables outside personality and language learning strategy might correlate to the learners’ speaking skills

Abstract

Islamic junior high schools have more duties than the public schools. They have the duty of teaching Islamic values to their students because these schools are established based on Islamic teachings. Islamic values must be included in all aspects of the school program. The materials used for teaching the students should also contain Islamic values. Unfortunately, based on the writers’ observation, not all Islamic junior high schools integrate Islamic values in the materials taught to the students. This fact challenges the English teachers in Islamic schools to select and to consider the appropriate values, cultures, and ideologies in teaching and learning English process. As a result, this paper is based on a study conducted to develop materials which integrate Islamic values for teaching Speaking in a private junior high school in Yogyakarta. The study was aimed to reveal the students’ needs in relation to the integration of the Islamic values in the materials for teaching the speaking skill and to know the appropriateness of the materials. This is an R and D study. To design the textbook the ADDIE Model was employed. To meet the textbook appropriateness, the designed textbook is analysed by conducting theoretical and empirical validation. The result of the study indicates that the designed materials are appropriate to be used in the Islamic schools.

Abstract

Lecturers in universities preparing for future teachers often teach materials which they think are up-to-date. However, is it true that what they teach may be useful for their students in their teaching in the future. Students may graduate in four to five years and they may not get jobs as soon as they leave universities. When they get a job as teachers, it might be five to six years after they graduate. At that time in schools, a new curriculum may be introduced, new theories on language teaching may emerge, and new problems may be faced. What they got from their lecturers in universities may not be relevant for solving the new problems. So, they need new knowledge or even new skills. This paper tries to explore the ways lecturers can do to prepare their students to face the ‘real’ challenges in their time of teaching.

Abstract

This study aims at exploring the blended learning implementation in English for Arts Education Program and reporting lessons learned from the practice. Some theories regarding blended learning adoption and English for Specific Purposes (ESP) were utilized as the theoretical framework. As this case study was conducted in the ESP course in the Arts Education study program of a private university in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, a qualitative case study research design was employed, resulting in an in- depth description of the overall implementation. The data were collected through in-class and online observations, a semi-structured interview, and a focus group discussion (FGD) conducted in two classes employing blended learning, 20 representative students recruited by purposive sampling technique, and the lecturer of the course. The results were analyzed descriptively using content analysis. Based on the analysis, some stages undergone by the lecturer were drawn as they are in line with blended learning adoption stages and framework. Thus, some lessons learned reveal concerns on flexibility and accessibility to technologies and learning sources, a balanced portion of collaborative and independent learning, Information Technology (IT) knowledge, and material clarification and immediate feedback that play significant roles to students’ skill improvement and effectiveness of a blended learning course. This study offers new insights for lecturers, institutions, and students planning to adopt this approach for the findings present consideration of elements required in developing a blended learning course.

This study sought to find whether there is influence of students’ language learning strategies to their writing skill, students’ technology use to the writing skills, and combination of both to the writing skills. This study was quantitative research. The respondent were 459 high school students from six High schools. The students were 11 grade students in the first semester. The study employed Strategy Inventory Language Learning questionnaire, students’ technology use questionnaire, and a writing test to collect the quantitative data. The instruments were through experts to ensure the validity and reliability. The quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS to look for the regression value between variables. Findings suggest that both language learning strategies and students’ technology use significantly influence their writing performance. Moreover, language learning strategies as well as technology use, when analyzed separately, positively influence students’ writing performance. The findings confirm that including and promoting both language learning strategies and technology use could help student improve their performance in the classroom.
