Abstract

This study aims to find out reading strategies used by students at a public university in Aceh in cultivating their reading habit. Data were collected by means of questionnaire and interview. The results showed that most of the students were interested in reading and they had started it before coming to university. Family and friends had a little influence on them as they were self-motivated. The two most common reading habits that they had were having a reading schedule and making a reading list of their favorite book genres. On the other hand, none of them like to either bring books everywhere or read for others. They believed that reading has a lot of benefits, however, they did not want to force others to love reading.

Abstract

Reading, similar to other language skills, possesses its own unique techniques and strategies to employ. Every strategy has its distinct purpose and a particular context in which it is applied. Furthermore, it is crucial to employ specific procedures in order to ensure that these techniques are user-friendly. This study specifically focuses on this topic. The objectives of this study are to investigate the reading approaches often employed by students and what strategies they apply in order to increase their reading techniques and abilities. This quantitative study used questionnaire to collect the necessary data, from a sample of 28 second-year students at a private senior high school in Banda Aceh, Aceh. The findings showed that scanning and skimming were the most common reading techniques the students used. In addition, in order to sharpen the reading techniques, most of the students tried to enrich reading material and time management as well. Most of them also joined an extra English class in the afternoon outside the class.  They were enthusiastic to sharpen their ability in critical thinking and background knowledge in reading.  This study hopes to add insights into strategies of reading comprehension for other learners of English.

Abstract

As one of the language skills, reading also has two types of testing, namely subjective and objective testing. Each type of test has several forms. Although teachers must have their own purposes in choosing what type of test should be given to the students, some types of tests look more difficult than others. This is what this study focused on. The aim of this study is to look deeper into what and why some types of tests seem difficult to students, especially to Darul Ihsan students, which consist of 28 students. The result of this study shows that prediction, conclusion, details, and purposes are the most difficult question types. Meanwhile, the main idea, reference, and inference are quite difficult. In addition, the title, synonym, and antonym are not really difficult for them. The reasons behind this were that predictions, conclusions, details, and purposes need much critical thinking and background knowledge. This was what the students faced and surely should be a vital consideration in the teaching and learning process.

Abstract

Teaching English to young learners (TEYL) is different from teaching adults. Children need constant attention and assistance as well as motivating methods to keep them engaged particularly during online learning in the pandemic era these days. This study aims to investigate English teachers perception on teaching English vocabulary to elementary students by using storytelling method in a virtual environment. The study asked the following question: What is the English teachers perspective on teaching English using storytelling virtually during the pandemic? The study interviewed an English teacher of a private school in Bekasi, Indonesia using a semi-structured interview guide. The study found that the English teacher agreed that storytelling is beneficial to use in teaching English for young learners. In addition, the teacher mentioned that there were several issues during the online learning such as unenthusiastic students, students limited access to the gadgets, and students passive involvement during the learning. Further, in terms of teaching with storytelling, the teacher would request the students to make a video and retell stories in the textbook. This study concludes that it is paramount for English teachers to continuously provide varied teaching methods in order to solve problems faced by Indonesian elementary students during online learning.

Abstract

One of the key characteristics that students should possess when learning a second language is motivation. This article elaborates on how important motivation is when learning a second language. Two types of motivation are integrative motivation and instrumental motivation. A desire to encourage students to learn a language for a more practical reason is instrumental motivation. As opposed to this, integrative motivation is the motivating factor behind learning a language brought about by learners' positive attitudes regarding the target language and their eagerness to integrate into the community of that language. Hence, teachers or educators should strongly motivate the students in studying their second language to reach the goals of learning.

Abstract

Working memory is used to process information of our mental representations and new knowledge. In learning English language, students are faced with various kinds of material and instruction that relate to the development of their knowledge and skills. However, extraneous information may overload their cognitive load and inhibit their knowledge and performances. Therefore, the theory of cognitive load effects provides a solution towards the overloading of cognitive capacity by introducing cognitive load effects. Cognitive load theory itself deals with the instructional design methods that use the limited cognitive capacity of learners. There are three sources or types of cognitive load: the intrinsic load, extraneous load, and germane load. By analyzing an English textbook for class VIII secondary level in Indonesia designed by the Ministry of Education and Culture for distance learning in the Covid-19 pandemic era, this paper points out several cognitive load principles that create a better schema construction and automation that contribute to the decreased cognitive load.
