Abstract

As a result of global movement, either by voluntary migration or forced displacement, interpreter-mediated court proceedings are becoming increasingly common. Most courts established interpreter’s codes of conduct, preferring verbatim rendering of litigants’ utterances, in anticipation of potential cultural bias and partiality. However, this code of conduct seems to fail to accommodate complicated legal and language realities in intercultural court proceedings. In adversarial legal systems, the presentation of evidences highly relies on the skillful language manipulation by the lawyers. In terms of refugee status determination, the ability to retell traumatic experience determined asylum seekers’ credibility. Communication breakdowns and failure to provide cultural context are amongst the downside of verbatim rendering, since speakers have to breakdown their confession into short sentences to be fully translated. On other hand, in offering context and preserving intention, interpreter might be tempted alter speakers’ original voice/style, including eliminating repetitions, hesitations and inexplicitness. Considering this, it is suggested that pragmatic meaning interpretation is utilized by taking more caution to preserving speakers’ original style. In doing so, sufficient training for interpreters and sufficient number of interpreters must be provided.

This paper aims to analyze the grammatical structures used in the written texts of two English as a foreign language (EFL) learners. One of the EFL learners was from stage 2 and the other was from stage four. Therefore, both learners had different periods in learning English, and also grammatical knowledge of English. The learner in stage 2 has studied English for three terms and the learner in stage 4 has learnt English for two terms. The study was conducted using mixed-method approach. The results of the study showed that writing competence highly relied on the learners’ grammatical structure knowledge in order to express a clear message in writing. The learner of stage 4 was more capable of expressing his message in his writing because of his better ability to use grammatical knowledge in his sentences. The study concludes that the better English grammatical knowledge the learners have, the better expressions can be written by them.

Abstract

This study was carried out to overcome the difficulties in reading comprehension encountered by high school students. The SQ6R method was offered as the appropriate method to solve the problem in this school. It is aimed at assisting students to get reading information and its meaning. This research utilized quantitative method, i.e. experimental research to find the answer as to whether the SQ6R method could increase students' reading comprehension. The sample of this study was 30 students, equally distributed in both experimental group (class IX3) and control group (class IX2), of a junior high school in Central Aceh, Indonesia. The data of the study was gathered by conducting two tests (pre and post with the treatment in between) which was further analyzed by using t-test. The results indicated that although both classes increased their scores in the post-test, the scores of experimental class who experienced the SQ6R method in their learning increased significantly (39 – 84) and outperformed those in the control class (33 – 63). Furthermore, the result of t-test was found to be 13.53 which was higher than t-table of 1.4 at a significance level of 0.05. This signified that the hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the hypothesis (H0) was rejected. Thus, SQ6R method could increase the students’ reading comprehension. Based on the results, the teachers are recommended to apply this method in their teaching and learning process.
