Abstract

Today, the numbers of English speakers are geographically and culturally diverse. The discussion on which pronunciation model of English should be introduced to learners of English has become under discussion among English language practitioners. Should English teachers teach pronunciation aiming at near native accents or at intelligibility in which learners can understand different models of English? As a country where English is a foreign language and Non Native-English-Speaking Teachers (NNESTs) are vastly available, Indonesia has posed its uniqueness due to its diverse learners and teachers backgrounds. Under this circumstance, then, there has been a frequent question to whether NNESTs can help learners to develop their English pronunciation. This paper discusses English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) model as suggested by Jenkins (2000) in teaching English pronunciation that can be implemented in the Indonesian context. It suggests that what matters more to learners is improving their intelligibility in English pronunciation rather than aiming for near native accents. English teachers are encouraged to develop a pronunciation instruction that suits the learners needs and interests without discriminating any model of English. Finally, a conclusion is provided with my argument that ELF model will be a better model to be implemented in the teaching of pronunciation in the English classroom in Indonesia.

Abstract

The way people connect with one another is referred to as communication. People interact to communicate things like asking, asserting, promising, thanking, apologizing, and complaining. Thus, utterances have a purpose in communication. The goal of this study was to identify the sorts of illocutionary acts used in Zootopia. Specifically, the study examined any illocutionary acts found in the main characters utterances. This qualitative study used descriptive methods as a technique analysis. The study also used documentary techniques and classification methods to analyze the data obtained. The data were the utterances of the main character, Judy Hopps. The results of this study revealed that the speeches of the main character contained five categories of illocutionary acts: representative acts, directive acts, commissive acts, expressive acts, and declarative acts. In addition, the most illocutionary acts used were the expressive acts. Thus, it can be concluded that the type of illocutionary acts that appears the most in the speeches of the main character is the expressive acts.

Abstract

This study was carried out to overcome the difficulties in reading comprehension encountered by high school students. The SQ6R method was offered as the appropriate method to solve the problem in this school. It is aimed at assisting students to get reading information and its meaning. This research utilized quantitative method, i.e. experimental research to find the answer as to whether the SQ6R method could increase students' reading comprehension. The sample of this study was 30 students, equally distributed in both experimental group (class IX3) and control group (class IX2), of a junior high school in Central Aceh, Indonesia. The data of the study was gathered by conducting two tests (pre and post with the treatment in between) which was further analyzed by using t-test. The results indicated that although both classes increased their scores in the post-test, the scores of experimental class who experienced the SQ6R method in their learning increased significantly (39 84) and outperformed those in the control class (33 63). Furthermore, the result of t-test was found to be 13.53 which was higher than t-table of 1.4 at a significance level of 0.05. This signified that the hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the hypothesis (H0) was rejected. Thus, SQ6R method could increase the students reading comprehension. Based on the results, the teachers are recommended to apply this method in their teaching and learning process.

Abstract

Writing has been a very challenging skill for students especially for eight grade learners of one Islamic junior high school in Central Aceh. This research was conducted to see whether the picture and picture-learning model could increase the students’ capability in writing. To investigate it, the quantitative approach, i.e., experimental method was employed. The population of this study was four classes, totaling 124 students. By using random sampling, classes VIII1 and VIII3 consisting of 30 and 32 students, respectively, were selected as the sample of this research. To collect the data, both pretest and posttest were given to the students before and after applying the picture-learning model. The results showed that the learners performed better after the intervention for both groups; however, the experimental group made better improvement in their writing (post-test = 84; pre-test = 60). In addition, the t-test also displayed that t-test (3.603) was higher than t-table (3.0) indicating that Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. The conclusion, therefore, was that the picture and picture-learning model increased the students’ writing ability.

Abstract

This study investigated the use of dicto-comp in minimizing errors in students writing. The study concerned the type of errors frequently made by the students after the implementation of dicto-comp and the effectiveness of dicto-comp in reducing the students errors in writing. The study used the quantitative approach using the quasi-experimental research design. The instrument of the study was writing tests. The study took place at a senior high school in Banda Aceh, Aceh Province, Indonesia. Findings showed that after the implementation of dicto-comp, the students frequently made grammatical errors at 46.42% and mechanical errors at 40.66%. Further, the t-test results showed that t-test = 2.12 and t-table = 1.70. This indicated that t-test score was higher than t-table, and thus, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. Therefore, it can be concluded that dicto-comp decreased the errors in the students writing. It is suggested that teachers of English apply dicto-comp technique and/or combine it with another method/ strategy in teaching writing in classroom

Abstract

Some students consider that reading comprehension is still one of the most challenging subjects in English. Others find topics covered while reading English books to be uninteresting. Teachers attempt to address these issues by utilizing a variety of strategies that boost students' reading comprehension abilities. Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) is one strategy used to help solve these issues. This study investigated the use of CRS in reading comprehension among undergraduate students. The study was carried out at English Language Education Department of Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Ar-Raniry Banda Aceh. This study used quantitative research method namely pre-experimental research design in which the class chosen was only one class consisting of 32 students and given the pre-test, teaching presentation, and post-test. The treatment was the CSR as the method during four times meetings in reading comprehension class. The mean score of the pre-test was 62.1 while, the mean score of the post-test was 77.3. The study concluded that the CRS strategy had a postive impact to the students reading comprehension as seen from the increase of test scores. The use of CSR is therefore useful in teaching reading for students at the university level.
