Abstract

Investigating students perspectives on assessment has been widely studied, however, relatively little is known about how university students respond to assessment. Assessment is an important part of teaching and learning process because it is used to measure students knowledge, skills and also to evaluate the program. Students perspectives are particularly important because the power of assessment directly impacts on their motivation and attitudes towards learning. This study focused on finding out the student perceptions of the test, test result, test procedure and feedback of four skill-subjects that they had taken. The study explored the students opinions of English language assessment in English Department of Universitas Nusa Cendana, Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia through the draw and write technique and interview. The results showed that assessment might cause positive or negative feelings among the students. This paper helps understand how assessment impacts the students lives, how teacher can make a well-designed assessment to measure the students ability and skills properly without discouraging them from learning, and how the draw and write technique can be used to document the student perceptions.

Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the grammatical structures used in the written texts of two English as a foreign language (EFL) learners. One of the EFL learners was from stage 2 and the other was from stage four. Therefore, both learners had different periods in learning English, and also grammatical knowledge of English. The learner in stage 2 has studied English for three terms and the learner in stage 4 has learnt English for two terms. The study was conducted using mixed-method approach. The results of the study showed that writing competence highly relied on the learners grammatical structure knowledge in order to express a clear message in writing. The learner of stage 4 was more capable of expressing his message in his writing because of his better ability to use grammatical knowledge in his sentences. The study concludes that the better English grammatical knowledgethe learners have, the better expressions can be written by them.

Firstly, the main character's rebellion against societal norms displays the importance of freedom of thought and self-expression. Secondly, the character's display of courage emphasizes the value of standing up to pressures and following one's conscience. Thirdly, the significance of friendship and solidarity in confronting life's challenges is evident in the narrative. Lastly, the film underscores the importance of embracing uniqueness and individuality in the journey of self-identity. This study provides profound insights into the moral values depicted by the main character, serving as a valuable basis for discussions and reflections within the realms of moral education and personal development. Moreover, the study contributes to a deeper understanding of the far-reaching influence of moral values in shaping individuals' lives within society's fabric.

Abstract

Language shift means replacing one language to another as a communication tool within a community. This study intends to investigate the factors that cause language shift among Acehnese and its impact to the young generations of Acehnese language users. The study reveals that there are two factors causing a shift in Acehnese language, namely: the external factors (i.e., culture, economy, and inter-generational transfer) and (2) internal factors (i.e, language attitude and language ability). In addition to the impact of language use, the study points out that although most of the Acehnese people are able to speak their own community language, their children are rapidly losing their language.

Abstract

Simultaneous interpreting is an interpreting mode which occurs simultaneously between the interpreter and the speaker. This paper discusses simultaneous interpreting and the strategies used in simultaneous interpreting. Simultaneous interpreting gives more challenges for the interpreter since the interpreter has to translate orally what has been said within the time allowed by the speed of the speaker. Thus, it is more complicated and needs more attention to the output and active language skills.
