Jurnal Komunikasi Islam is the flagship journal, published biannually in June and December, of Islamic Communication and Broadcast Department, Dakwah and Communication Faculty, Islamic State University of Sunan Ampel (UINSA) Surabaya in collaboration with Indonesian Professional Dakwah Association (APDI). Jurnal Komunikasi Islam provides academic articles to the professional needs of both Islamic communication scholars and practitioners. The journal helps encourage in disseminating empirical and theoretical research findings, developing theory, and introducing new concepts related to Islamic oration and sermon, Islamic Journalism, mediated-dakwah and religious film, Islamic communication-related studies to its readership.

Abstract

This paper seeks to explain the urgency of the philosophy of da'wah for developing students' understanding of da’wah science-related units in the Department of Islamic Communication and Broadcast, Faculty of Da'wah and Communication, State Islamic University of Sunan Ampel (UINSA) Surabaya. Applying a library and field research, this study has found that the da’wah philosophy unit has contributed to the increase of students' understanding about the scope and area of da'wah science. In addition, the unit of da'wah philosophy has provided philosophical methodology that is useful for examining the process of da'wah, including critical thinking, for those who are candidate of Islamic preachers (da’i), namely the students of Da’wah and Communication Faculty.

Abstract

The growing phenomenon of hijrah lately has been used by many groups to campaign various religious issues. However, the campaign contents are often discriminatory through flouring the logic of gender as natural. This study analyses the discourse of contemporary Muslim women's resistance to the marginalisation and domestication on mubadalah.id site. Using a qualitative research design and Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis, the results of this study indicate that mubadalah.id considers the discourse of marginalisation of women is contrary to gender equity taught in Islamic teachings. This online media also provides a counter discourse that men are also responsible for domestic works.

Abstract

This article reports on a quantitative explanatory research conducted with nationwide survey 1000 of millennial Muslim generations in five major cities in Indonesia regarding the digital literacy. The results have found that the level of millennial Muslim’s digital literacy in Indonesia is quite good. Although the majority learn the internet independently, they denote quick response in adapting to cyber culture. Unfortunately, the duration of internet access has remained high that is likely to open up opportunities for negative effects of the internet. In addition, this study argues that several generations of millennial Muslims unwittingly have contributed to spreading hoax because they mostly do not check or validate information to authoritative sources.

Abstract

This article discusses intersection between dakwah and politics in contemporary Indonesia. It demonstrates the use of dakwah as political vehicle in electoral politics by looking at dakwah actors and their methods. Examining valuable sources, mainly online data, the article further concludes that the 2019 presidential election had led to the division within the dakwah actors. They are divided along the lines of presidential candidates and this division resonates clearly though their dakwah activism. From ideological perspectives, this article further finds out that dakwah actors and institutions with Islamist ideology inclines to vote for Prabowo Subijanto, whereas his rival as well as incumbent president Joko Widodo gains a significant support from the traditionalist Nahdlatul Ulama and the so-called “moderate Islam” had been central issue dividing the two.

Abstract

This paper discusses how Kompas.com and Republika.co.id framed the coverage of the repatriation of ex-ISIS members to Indonesia. This study was a qualitative study using the approach of Robert N. Entman framing analysis model. The findings revealed that Kompas.com and Republika Online framed the return of the former ex-ISIS fighters to Indonesia differently in terms of the selection of news sources, legal analysis, and approval. Kompas.com tended to choose state officials to be a source to conduct analysis based on state law and reject repatriation of ex-ISIS. Meanwhile, Republika Online tended to select religious leaders to analyse based on Islamic law and allowed them to repatriate to this country. In other words, Kompas.com focused on the principle of humanism, while Republika Online more emphasised on Islam values and nationalism in their news coverage.

Abstract

This article aims to analyse the meaning of the construction of Islam in the "Resik V” advertisement of the "Sakinah Family" version on television. There are two research questions raised as a focus of the study, namely the reason why the producer of "Resik V" Ad does "Islamisation" the product? How does "Resik V" Ad put the narratives and codes of Islam on this product? Using Roland Barthes's semiotic analysis, the results of this study found that, first, “Resik V“ advertising was the result of the construction marketing strategy which provided an illusion and adaptation in order to be accepted by Muslim consumers. Second, the narration and co-de of Islam within Ad product was a commodification of religion since the main key for the sakinah family mainly because of faith and obedience to Allah Swt, and not merely maintaining the cleanliness and firmness of the female sex organs.

Abstract

Ecology of da'wah is the integration of envi-ronmental aspects with Islamic values in da'wah. The citizen of Surabaya has an uncharted ecological potential. This study attempts to map the the elements of preaching ecology in Surabaya such as the potential of preachers, da'wah messages, proselytising methods, the proselytism object (mad'u) , media of proselytising, mosques, prayer rooms, and majelis taklim . By using qualitative-descriptive methods, the results of this study revealed that Muslim proselytisers have a very dominant role in empowering religiosity of society, however, the da'i-mad'u ratio is not adequate for the needs. Further, the da'wah message delivered by da'i seems did not meet a standardized da'wah curriculum. The majority of preachers also use one-way communication while preaching and only a small number of them provided a question-and-answer session. Mean-while, the ratio of the number of Muslims to religious facilities was 513: 1.

Abstract

This article discusses the form and function of pro-selytizing phatic communication on the Instagram account vi-deo @caknunquotes. By using descriptive qualitative methods through the techniques of listening and note taking, the study found that most of the categories in da’wa on the Instagram video @caknunquotes carried a lot of regional elements or re-gional dialects in the form of particle fat, fatic words, and fatic phrases. With regard to phatic communication function, it expresses courtesy to the congregation, convinces the congre-gation, confirms the contents of the da'wah, asks for approval, greetings to familiarize themselves, as a form of proof of the intent or contents of the preaching, Javanese expression, as emphasis on the sentence sentence, and as a form of clarifying the contents again propaganda. In addition, flabby communi-cation with dialect or local language style makes the speech partner more deeply the contents of his da'wah.

Abstract

Western media is considered to have an important role war in constructing a negative image of Islam throughout the world, especially after the 9/11 WTC attacks. It inspired the emergence of various popular cultural products, especially in several Muslim-populated countries, which carried out a counter-culture to this reality. This study discusses how the construction of Islam within Western media in the novel Bulan Terbelah Di Langit Amerika. This research used a qualitative method utilising a media text analysis approach. The results showed that the media played an important role in constructing the identity of Islam, as the world enemy, was a media marketing strategy to increase product circulation. This negative view of Islam may be due to the absence of comprehensive information about Islam.

Abstract

Mosques as mosaics of Islamic civilization have a variety of functions. Islamic civilization, from the classical period (650-1250 AD) to the current modern period, has a central institutional movement through the mosque. This study discusses the role of mosques as public spheres and centres for proselytisation of moderation. By using library research, this study illustrated that the mosque as an institutional centre of the implementation of worship both mahdloh and mu 'amalah. In addition, the mosque also functions as a public space in solving various problems of society as well as as a centre for preaching based on moderate Islamic values. The results of this study will enrich the treasure of the development of the role of the mosque in the current era to become a centre for socio-religious activities based on moderate Muslims.
