Jurnal Komunikasi Islam is the flagship journal, published biannually in June and December, of Islamic Communication and Broadcast Department, Dakwah and Communication Faculty, Islamic State University of Sunan Ampel (UINSA) Surabaya in collaboration with Indonesian Professional Dakwah Association (APDI). Jurnal Komunikasi Islam provides academic articles to the professional needs of both Islamic communication scholars and practitioners. The journal helps encourage in disseminating empirical and theoretical research findings, developing theory, and introducing new concepts related to Islamic oration and sermon, Islamic Journalism, mediated-dakwah and religious film, Islamic communication-related studies to its readership.

This study discusses the forms of the message and the principles of Islamic communication at Gayo ethnic culture in Central Aceh District. Using qualitative research with the semiotics analysis approach in analysing the text of the customary speech written by A.R. Hakim Aman Pinan, this research found that the form of messages contained in the custom of downcast is the form of informative messages namely messages spoken by pemelengkan only in the form of persuasive messages, namely pemelengkan give advice containing persuasion so that awareness arises in the communicant, and coercive messages, namely pemelengkan give orders to comply with customs and sanctions against these violations. Additionally, the principles of Islamic communication contained this culture are the principle of qaulan sadiddan, qaulan kariman, qaulan layyinan, qaulan maysuran, and qaulan ma’rufan.

In the 2019 general election, social media became an important part in building a political image as well as a channel for political communication. One of the opposition movements against the incumbent was the #2019GantiPresiden movement. The movement was a channel of political communication for people who personally wanted to have a new president. This study aimed to reveal how the #2019GantiPresiden political communication movement during 2018 and the repressive treatment experienced by them. This study used a qualitative research method of text analysis of several online media such as Twitter and micro-blogging. The results showed that the #2019GantiPresiden movement was an organic and voluntary based political communication movement. The spread of this movement was increasingly massive with the support of social media in the form of Twitter in building mass political support.

This paper examines the relationship between da'wah and politics based on a symbiotic paradigm. Through a historical-critical approach, this paper found that the relationship between da'wah and politics has an inseparable relationship. Historically, the Prophet Muhammad and the Muslim scholars have practised a symbiotic pattern of political da'wah. In this context, da'wah conducted within the frame of idealism, which is to spread the goodness of religious teachings. In this regard, various benefits and goodness for the community and get the pleasure of God. Furthermore, political propaganda emphasizes balance and benefit for the people. Therefore, propaganda and political symbiosis, at a certain level, have given room for the development of democracy. In this regard, it is necessary to have a proselytising management approach.

This article discusses trends in the study of da'wah, specifically communication and Islamic broadcasting, which are discussed in scientific journals. This study uses a literature study approach to 11 journals published by the Islamic Communication and Broadcast Study Program in Indonesia. 581 articles were determined to be the subject of research. Each article is mapped based on (1) the theme and subject of the study, (2) the data collection method, (3) the approach or theory used, (4) the reference source used. The results of the data analysis showed that most of the articles with the theme 'Da'wah' from various platforms of various research subjects. This study opens a new paradigm in communication in general. This is marked by the enrichment of communication and broadcast theories through research in da'wah studies.

This article discusses the transcendental communication of the Ulu Kapuas Muslim community, which is represented in the oral tradition of Ulak Manah. Through a descriptive qualitative method that focuses on analyzing the story of the Umung Putri Raja and the Shaman Agreement with the crocodile king, this study found that the Ulu Kapuas Muslim community believed that there was a familial relationship between humans and descendants of crocodiles. This tradition is manifested in the tradition of buang-buang, maintaining relationships and descent, as well as reminding of promises owed. Preservation of these traditions forms transcendental communication between human descendants and crocodile offspring in Ulak Manah.

Abstract: This article is the result of a descriptive qualitative research report in the laboratory of the Da'wah and Communication Faculty, Walisongo State Islamic University (UIN), Semarang. This study has concluded that the design of the Da'wah laboratory at the Da'wah and Communication Faculty of UIN Walisongo Semarang was developed based on the department, which included the Islamic Community Development Laboratory (PMI), the Islamic Communication and Broadcasting Laboratory (KPI), the Da'wah Management Laboratory (MD), the Guidance and Islamic Counseling Laboratory (BPI) In addition, the laboratory development is in line with university Tridharma. The laboratory development phase is carried out through four stages, namely the initiation phase and the construction of a quality management system, the optimization phase of academic support capabilities, the intensification and extensification phase of research services, and the external capacity building phase.

This study aims to describe the direction of the development of Da'wah science developed by the Faculty of Da'wah and Communication of UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya. This research uses a qualitative approach. Data collected through interviews and documentation. Data analysis techniques using the flow model stages. The results showed that the development of da'wah that occurred at the Faculty of Da'wah and Communication of UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya was carried out through a system approach, which was centered on the study of da'wah elements and represented in the area of interest in the KPI Study Program as the basis for the development of Da'wah science that manifested in the study area at the BKI, MD, and PMI Study Program. However, the development of da'wah scholarship was also developed through other disciplines (interdisciplinary) when studying the phenomenon of da'wah.

This article reports on research conducted in 2018 about the dialectic of Muslim minority da'wah in the multicultural-metropolitan community in Pakuwon City Surabaya, using a qualitative descriptive approach. Findings illustrate Muslim minority in Pakuwon City has a strong religious identity and the pleasure of ukhuwah Islamiyah. This is supported by the central role of the commodification agent, namely takmir (mosque committee) of the Al-Madani mosque. In additin, Muslim minority in Pakuwon City makes the Al-Madani mosque a center for da'wah through oral, written, and social movement methods, such as religious sermon, religious forum, web-based media, zakat and qurban, and fundraising for social services. Another finding reveals that the dialectic proselytising of Muslim minority in the multicultural-metropolitan community in Pakuwon City Surabaya produces a symmetrical environmental harmony which is in line with the satisfaction of the da'wah partners.

This article examines the study design and methodology applied in proselytizing science at the Faculty of Proselytizing (Da'wah) and Communication UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya during the period 1985 to 2015. This study analysed the scientific works of the faculty academic staff and students between 1985 and 2003 through the qualitative methodology. The data collected by observation and documentation and analysed through coding, categorizing, and theming procedure. The study found that the methodology used for studying da'wah science can be categorized into five approaches: factor approach, system model or interpretive approaches or understanding the meaning of da'wah for individuals, communities or society, the developmental approach and participatory approach or Participatory Action Research (PAR).

This study aims to explain how the use of word of mouth communication (getok tular) and the rationale behind the usage as a method of da’wah within Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI). This study used a qualitative approach with a case study design. The results of the study revealed that the word of mouth communication was applied for two activities, namely as a method of delivering da’wah messages and as a method of cadre with a chain system to official members who were stratified based on the study book or HTI curriculum. The reason why HTI used word of mouth communication as a method of da’wah was because of the effectiveness and efficiency factors as well as socio-cultural factors.
