Abstract

This article aims to describe the da'wah activities of Indonesian Muslim communities on social media—specifically in producing, distributing, and consuming religious information—amidst the growing trend of Islamophobia and the negative framing of Islamic news in Western mass media. This study employs a literature review approach and utilizes the participatory culture theory proposed by Henry Jenkins to analyze the data. The results of this study indicate that the active participation of Indonesian Muslims on several social media platforms, such as Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and Twitter, reflects an increase in the creativity of da'wah among Indonesian Muslims. In addition, their active participation in cyberspace represents an effort to build relationships, engage in collaborative da'wah, and formulate identity. However, their activities on social media also have negative impacts—namely, the potential distortion of religious messages, as not all digital da'wah content creators possess the necessary competencies and religious authority.

Abstract

The controversy surrounding Islamic preaching (da'wah) involving a prominent religious figure in Indonesia, Miftah Maulana Habiburrahman, well known as Gus Miftah, arose from his use of the word "Goblok" toward an iced tea seller during a religious gathering (pengajian), which became a topic of public discourse on social media at the end of 2024. The statement triggered a polarized response on platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, and Meta, reflecting the dynamics of social and religious values in digital media discourse. This study aims to analyze netizens' responses to the controversy surrounding Gus Miftah's statement as a form of preaching discourse on social media. Using discourse analysis, the study's results showed a polarization of netizen responses into two groups: critical expressions and support. Those who expressed criticism highlighted violations of moral and social norms, while those who supported Gus Miftah's statement emphasized the need to contextualize it properly to avoid misunderstanding.

Abstract

This study examines the persuasive communication strategies employed by the organizers of the "Kurban sampai Pelosok (Qurban to the Remote Areas) "program, initiated by the Zakat Collection Unit (UPZ) at Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta. The research was motivated by the consistent yearly increase in the number of sohibul qurban (qurban donors), which has continuously surpassed the program's target. Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with program coordinators and direct observations at the UPZ UNS office. The findings reveal that the program's success is closely tied to the effectiveness of persuasive communication strategies. These include: (1) rebranding the tagline from “Kurban dari Kampus (Qurban from Campus)” to “Kurban sampai Pelosok (Qurban to the Remote Areas)”; (2) crafting diverse and creative message content; and (3) disseminating information consistently across various social media platforms and official UPZ UNS channels.

Abstract

This study explores the emergence of Islamic relationship themes on Indonesian social media platforms, specifically Instagram and TikTok. It primarily draws on the concept of the mediatization of religion. A qualitative content analysis was employed in this research. In this regard, the researcher observed several TikTok and Instagram accounts that feature Islamic relationship content and analysed narrative messages, videos, captions, sound effects, and user reactions in the comment sections of those accounts. The findings of this study show that the Islamic relationship theme has emerged as a new alternative to traditional da’wah topics. This shift is largely due to the theme’s social relevance for social media users. Furthermore, Islamic relationship content serves as a counter-narrative to the trend of casual relationships that are increasingly popular among younger generations. This content also constructs and presents an imagined profile of the ideal romantic partner according to Islamic values.

Abstract

This study explores the portrayal of Islamic boarding schools (pesantren), religious scholars (kiai), and Islamic students (santri) in Indonesian religious films, including 3 Doa 3 Cinta (2008), Perempuan Berkalung Sorban (2009), Negeri Lima Menara (2012), and Sang Kiai (2013). Through a qualitative-descriptive approach, the findings reveal that pesantren are often depicted as conservative educational institutions with challenging environments. However, the figure of the kiai is generally portrayed as a wise and open-minded leader who addresses socio-cultural issues and serves as a patriotic figure in Indonesia’s struggle for independence. The santri are commonly shown as resilient and united. Notably, Negeri Lima Menara presents a contrasting depiction by portraying Islamic boarding schools as modern educational institutions that play a significant role in shaping the nation's future generation.
