Abstract

The presence of social media, especially Instagram, is a blessing for Muslim content creators in teaching Islamic da’wah history. The textual, visual, and auditory features in Instagram allow them to create educational content that can bridge Islamic history information and modern understanding, making it easier to understand and not boring. This study examines an Instagram account @gen.saladin in creating creative means of Islamic history education. Using qualitative content analysis and a media ecology approach, the results of the study have revealed that to create creative educational content about Islamic history, @gen.saladin emphasizes the use of contemporary terms, mentioning film titles, song lyrics, or current news when discussing topics of Islamic da’wah history. Hence, it appears more relevant and interesting to the audience.

Abstract

Social media offers a new space for disseminating ideas about religious tolerance. Efforts to suppress the spread of religious-based radicalism and intolerance have been carried out by various state institutions, organizations, religious figures, and influencers in the digital space. One of the digital media that is quite popular in spreading the idea of religious tolerance lately is the #LogIndiCloseTheDoor podcast initiated by Deddy Corbuzier and hosted by Habib Ja'far. This study focuses on the message of tolerance in the #LogIndiCloseTheDoor podcast. Using the library research method, the results of this study illustrate that the messages of tolerance contained in this channel are found in episodes 18, 26, and 28. In these episodes, several messages of religious tolerance suit the principles of tolerance taught by Islam, namely al-hurriyah al-diniyah and al-insaniyyah.

Abstract

This study aims to examine how the mediatization of religion takes place in Habib Husein Ja’far’s da’wah through YouTube channel Jeda Nulis. Based on the framework of mediatization theory, religion is increasingly being incorporated into the logic of media. This study used a qualitative approch with the netnographic method. The findings show that the mediatization process of da'wah on YouTube Jeda Nulis occurs through adjustments to the da'wah method and its content format. Habib Ja’far displays a millennial persona and carries topics based on trends in society as his da'wah method approach. His da'wah is formed in popular content formats such as vlogs, podcasts, and talk shows. He also collaborated with popular figures who played an important role in increasing the engagement rate. From the perspective of the audience, the content of Jeda Nulis builds narratives about representing peaceful Islam and strengthening tolerance. At this phase, mediatization shows the potential transformation of da'wah in the digital era. At the same time, the mediatization of da'wah facilitates religious expressions which have implications for the emergence of hate speech in the digital space.

Abstract

The Islamic scholarly tradition is rich in fundamental related-communication concepts, including message theory. This article endeavors to undertake a comparison analysis of seminal concepts of message between Islam and Western perspectives in the field of communication science. Employing a library research approach and semiotics perspective, this study argues that aspects of the messages, that is, 'the subject of message' and 'the messenger,' have roots in the theological dimensions of Islam. This differs from the Western concept of messages, which tend to solely rational-empirically explain messages as themselves. However, some seminal concepts about messages in Islamic literature can be integrated into theories of messages in modern communication theory that are relevant to current the Islamic-based scholarly paradigm, namely the comparative-integrative framework.

Abstract

This study aims to comprehend the pattern of news content of Indonesia's 2024 presidential election and the ideology on the media suaramuhammadiyah.id and NU online during the presidential election campaign. Using a qualitative content analysis method, this study found that the news content of the two online Islamic media had different patterns in issue selection and source determination. Meanwhile, in the category of content tendencies, the two online media showed relatively the same pattern, that is, both were neutral. This study also found that the news content of the media suaramuhammadiyah.id and NU online was influenced by the ideology of moderation. This can be seen from the tendency of the content of the two online media which disseminated moderate Islamic ideology developed by Muhammadiyah and NU. The tendency of neutrality is in accordance with the values of Muhammadiyah and NU moderation, as contained in the doctrine of Muhammadiyah's "Islam Berkemajuan" (Progressive Islam) and NU's "Islam Nusantara" (Islam of the Archipelago).

Abstract

This article discusses the role of broadcast media in spreading religious-based radicalism content in Indonesia. Using a literature review, this study found three negative impacts of broadcasting institutions, especially television, on Indonesian society. First, spreading hateful information against certain social or religious groups. Second, the potential for national disintegration due to the spread of media content that is contrary to national values. Third, the emergence of potential legal violations that occur due to weaknesses in monitoring digital-based broadcast content. From here, it is necessary to increase the capacity of the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI), restore contradictory statement regulations and norms in broadcasting behavior guidelines and broadcasting behavior standards, as well as the need for institutional coordination between state institutions.

Abstract

This study examines the populist rhetoric of political actor, Muhaimin Iskandar, delivered on @CakIminNow during the 2024 Indonesian presidential election campaign, especially in the tweet dated October 1, 2023 regarding the Celebration of Pancasila Sanctity Day. This study uses a critical paradigm and Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis technique in analyzing nine units of analysis posted on @CakIminNow. The results of this study have revealed that the representation of moderate Islam has been utilized as a tool of populist rhetoric by Muhaimin Iskandar (Cak Imin) as one of the vice presidential candidates in the 2024 election. In addition, moderate Islam is not only seen as a system of beliefs and religious practices but also as a commodity in political marketing communication efforts by political actors. In short, this populist rhetoric functions as a strategy to strengthen the political image and garner voter support during Indonesia’s 2024 presidential election campaign.

Abstract

This study investigates Generation Z's trust in mainstream and social media in Indonesia and Lebanon. Using a descriptive research design and survey method, data were collected from 114 respondents through Google Forms in April 2022, including students from Universitas Islam Negeri Sunan Ampel (UINSA) Surabaya and participants from @iCademy in Lebanon. The research explores the critical role of mainstream media in modern information dissemination and social media as a powerful communication tool. The results indicate that while social media is widely used, mainstream media maintains credibility due to its verified information. The findings emphasize the importance of reliable information sources for Generation Z, especially in predominantly Muslim contexts where ethical standards and factual accuracy are crucial. These findings suggest that media organizations must uphold high journalistic standards to retain the trust of young audiences.

Abstract

This article reports on the textual thematic research conducted with 100 Netizens' comments on the YouTube channel of Al-Bahjah TV entitled "Tanggapan Buya Yahya tentang Fatwa MUI Haram Membeli Produk Isra*l/Yahudi (The Response of Buya Yahya to the MUI Fatwa on the Prohibition of Buying Israeli/Jewish Products)”. This study uses thematic analysis and Stuart Hall's reception theoretical framework to examine Netizens' (mad’u) reception towards Buya Yahya's online preaching regarding MUI recommendation for Muslims to avoid buying any products affiliated with Israel. The findings illustrate three different mad'u receptions, namely dominant hegemonic reading (48), negotiated reading (22), and oppositional reading (30). The Netizens' (mad'u) cultural background influenced the variety of their reading positions of Buya Yahya's preaching, which resulted in several different types of arguments: humanity, religion, economy, socio-politics, and commodification of religion.
