Abstract

This article reports on research conducted through observations, document studies, and in-depth interviews, with several Salafi activists in Southest Sulawesi regarding the strategy of da’wah movement. Using a phenomenological hermeneutic approach, this study has revealed that the traces of salafism in Southeast Sulawesi began in 1998 when a number of Middle Eastern alumni from this area returned and became agents of spreading the idea of salafism in Southeast Sulawesi. Furthermore, the growth of Salafi communities is attributed to effective institutional management, particularly their ability to mobilize  da’wah resources and establish communication with external parties. However, other Salafi communities tend to remain rigid, prioritizing stability and consistency in adhering to the manhaj sunnah.

Abstract

This article is a report on ethnographic research regarding the social da'wah services of four religious figures, namely Kiai Ghofur, Gus Samsudin, Gus Idris, and Ustadz Ujang Busthomi. The results indicate a shift from magical elements to a more rational approach in their social da'wah services, integrating religious literacy and faith-moral therapy with social, economic, and health solutions. These kiai emphasize the relevance of religion to the needs of modern society, the strengthening of social cohesion, and the importance of responding to contemporary challenges. This study identifies four main themes: the transformation of religious practices, the integration of social needs and the community, inclusivity and egalitarianism in social services, and social empowerment and stability.

Abstract

This study explores the metarhetoric KH Muhammad Iqdam Kholid's, known as Gus Iqdam, sermons in "Rutinan malam Selasa". Through qualitative text analysis, the study reveals that his use of classical rhetorical elements—ethos, pathos, and logos—is strategically developed to help the audience grasp religious teachings logically while fostering a sense of connection with the audience. Gus Iqdam employs deductive, causal, and comparative reasoning not only to convey religious messages but also to demonstrate their rational basis. His pathos-based metarhetoric is expressed at times through emotionally charged spiritual appeals. Meanwhile, his ethos-driven metarhetoric serves to establish credibility and encourage emotional, intellectual, and spiritual trust from the congregation.
