Abstract

ABSTRACT EFFECT OF SUBSTITUTION OF YELLOW CORN WITH BANANA (Musa paradisiaca) PEELS IN THE DIETS ON BROILER PEERFORMANCE. A study has been conducted to determine the effect of substitution of yellow corn with banana (Musa paradisiaca) peels in the diets on broiler performance. The present study used 60 broiler chicks and reared for 5 weeks. A Completely Randomized Design was used as an experimental design with 4 treatments and 5 replications. Treatments were formulated as follow: R0: diet without substitution of banana peels or 0% in the diet; R1: diet with the substitution of 7,5% or 4,28% in the diet; R2: diet with the substitution of 15,0% or 8,55% in the diet; and R3: diet with the substitution of 22,5% or 12,83% in the diet. Variables measured were: daily feed consumption, daily gain, and feed conversion. Research results showed that daily feed consumption, daily gain, and feed conversionratio were all significantly (P < 0,05) affected by treatments. Daily feed consumption at R3 significantly (P < 0,05) lower compared with R0 and R1 treatments, but no differences (P > 0,05) were observed  between R2 and R3. No significant (P > 0,05) was observed between R0 and R1, but there was a significant difference (P < 0,05) between R2 and R3 and between R1 and R2. Feed conversion ratio was significantly (P < 0,05) lower for R0 compared with R1, R2 and R3, but no differences (P > 0,05) were observed among R0, R1, and R2 treatments. It can be concluded that banana (Musaparadisiaca) peels meal can be used up to 15% replacing yellow corn or 8,55% in broiler diet. Key words: Broiler chicks, Banana    (Musaparadisiaca) peels,        Daily feed consumption,         Daily gain, feed conversion            ratio.

Abstract

ABSTRACT   EFFECT OF UTILIZATION OF VIRGIN COCONUT OIL (VCO) IN THE DIET ON PIG PERFORMANCE. Utilization of fats and oils in pig diets is of great importance due to their high energy value. VCO is obtained by cold press processing of the kernel from the coconut fruit. Utilization of virgin coconut oil (VCO) in the diets on pig performance.  The present study was designed to elaborate the effect of utilization of VCO in the diets on energy and protein digestibility of growing pigs. The experiment was conducted using 20 castrated male pigs aged 1.5 - 2.0 months weighing 12,0±2,0 kg. The data were analyzed according to the linear model procedure for ANOVA appropriate for Randomized Block Design with 5 treatments and 4 replications. Treatments were formulated as follow: R0 = 100% control diet + 0% VCO; R1 = 99.5% control diet + 1.0% VCO; R2 = 98.0% control diet + 2.0% VCO; R3 = 97.0% control diet + 3.0% VCO; and R4 = 96.0% control diet + 4.0% VCO. Parameters measured were: daily feed intake, daily gain, daily water consumption. The results showed that the utilization of VCO up to 4% in the diets had no significant effect (P > 0.05) on daily feed intake, daily gain, daily water consumption of pigs. It can be concluded that the addition of VCO up to 4.0% in the diets has no significant meaning on pig performance.   Key words: Virgin coconut oil (VCO), Performance, Growing pigs

Abstract

THE APPLICATION OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY FOR BEEF-CATTLE AND COCONUT FARMER GROUPS IN SAWANGAN VILLAGE. Agriculture and livestock development are beneficial and mutually depending each other, so that integrated farming systems provide great benefits for both aspect. But there are some problem for this: Two beef-cattle farmer groups “Habel I” and “Habel II” at Sawangan Village, District Airmadidi, North Minahasa regency do not have any understanding and knowledge about proper cattle-farming development. Based on this, it has made the empowerment of members of the group through the application of science and technology with counseling and training methods. Principally, beef cattle business success is determined by three interrelated elements, e.g. seeds, feed and management. Beef-cattle farmer groups “Habel I” and “Habel II” integrates cattle-farming with coconut plantations simultaneously. Utilization of field under coconut trees to forage also serves as a cover crop. Members of the farmer group responded well to the application of science and technology activities through counseling and training , it can be seen from the availability of dwarf elephant grass in coconut plantations covering an area of 0.5 Ha . Other products produced in the form of silage and compost as well as the implementation of an assisted insemination ( 5 cows) . The application of science and technology through IbM activities can be resumed if there’s any assistance from the universities.   Keywords: Cattle, coconut, science technology, farmer groups
