Abstract

Abstract: Student engagement constitutes a critical aspect of the learning process, encompassing behavioural, emotional, and cognitive dimensions. These three components collectively determine the extent of students' active participation in educational activities and significantly influence their academic achievement. When student engagement is low, students are less likely to reach optimal learning outcomes. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of classical guidance services in enhancing student engagement among 11th-grade students at SMA Al Ma’soem during the 2024/2025 academic year. This research employs a quantitative approach using a pre-experimental one-group pre-test post-test design. The sample consists of 31 students, selected through simple random sampling. The results revealed that classical guidance services did not produce a statistically significant improvement in student engagement, as indicated by a p-value of 0.747 and a t-value of -0.325. Thus, no significant difference was observed between the pre-test and post-test scores, leading to the acceptance of the null hypothesis (H0) and the rejection of the alternative hypothesis (H1). These findings suggest that the classical guidance program, in its current form, is not practical in fostering higher levels of student engagement. Therefore, alternative intervention strategies should be considered, such as incorporating more interactive and experiential learning methods, to better support and enhance student engagement in the learning process.

Abstract

Trust is a key element in the effectiveness of the mental health counseling process, especially in reaching millennials who have unique characteristics in terms of values, communication, and expectations of psychological services. This study aims to identify and analyze effective strategies counselors use in building trust with millennial clients. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data was obtained through in-depth interviews and observations with professional counselors who are experienced in working with clients aged 20-35. The results revealed four main strategies used consistently, namely: (1) empathic and authentic communication, (2) the use of storytelling and personal narratives, (3) the application of inclusive and culturally sensitive language, and (4) the use of digital media as an initial medium for building trust. The findings confirm the importance of cultural competence and adaptation of counseling approaches to the social and technological dynamics faced by the millennial generation. Practical implications of this research include the need for more contextualized counselor training, as well as the development of service policies that accommodate relational and digital approaches in modern counseling practices.

Abstract

The issue of mental health among adolescents is becoming increasingly significant in the educational and social realms, as many adolescents face emotional distress without the support of a safe space to understand and manage their feelings. This study aims to explore the application of health communication principles in adolescent counseling practices, both by practitioners in formal settings such as schools and non-formal communities. Using a qualitative method with a case study approach, data was collected through in-depth interviews with three informants, namely a community mental health activist, an academic in the field of counseling guidance, and an adolescent who acted as a counselee. Findings from thematic analysis show that health communication is not only used to convey educational information, but also to build interactions that are empathic, participatory, and in accordance with the context of the counselee's life. The practice is realized through the use of familiar language, supportive gestures, and easy-to-understand analogies, such as "a tank of emotions" or "a body that asks for help." Communication is understood as a medium of recovery that allows for emotional validation, psychosocial assistance, and space for personal reflection. The results of this study confirm that health communication principles can enrich the adolescent counseling process, especially in strengthening trust and encouraging a deeper recovery process. This approach deserves to be developed in community-based counseling services that are adaptive to the emotional needs of today's adolescents.

Abstract

This study aims to measure the level of internalization of PAGI character values (Caring, Trustworthy, Persistent, and Innovative) among students at Universitas PGRI Adi Buana Surabaya and to identify implementation challenges in the digital era. Using a descriptive quantitative approach, this research involved a survey of 524 students selected through random sampling. The research instrument was a questionnaire with 76 statement items that was tested for validity and reliability, yielding a Cronbach's Alpha value of 0.960. The results show that the majority of students (76.13%) are in the "moderate" category for PAGI character internalization, while 12.35% are in the "high" category and 11.52% are in the "low" category. This finding indicates that although the PAGI character-building program has progressed well, further strengthening is still necessary. Deeper analysis reveals specific challenges, such as the influence of digital culture hindering the 'Caring' character, and passive learning patterns limiting the development of the 'Innovative' character. The 'Persistent' character was also identified as a significant weakness, with students' motivation to persevere when faced with failure remaining relatively low. This study concludes that a more intensive and integrated strategy for strengthening and socialization is required to deeply instill PAGI values and recommends a contextual approach that integrates these values into all aspects of campus life to produce graduates who are not only academically superior but also possess strong, adaptive characters to face future challenges.

Abstract

This study addresses the limited attention given to hearing siblings of individuals with deafness, a group that often remains overlooked within family support structures despite their critical roles. These siblings frequently experience emotional and social challenges as a result of the disproportionate focus placed on the needs of their deaf sibling, potentially impacting their well-being. This research aims to explore the lived experiences of hearing siblings and identify their specific needs for guidance and counseling support. Using a qualitative case study approach, the study involved four participants selected through purposive sampling, all of whom were actively engaged in their deaf sibling’s daily life. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using a thematic analysis approach. The analytical stages included verbatim transcription, open coding, theme categorization, and validation through member checking. The findings revealed five major themes: emotional burden, social challenges, diminished well-being, the urgent need for support, and perception of counseling. Participants described increased responsibility, feelings of neglect, stigma, and social isolation, all contributing to low self-esteem and psychological stress. Importantly, counseling was perceived positively as a “safe space,” but participants emphasized the need for counselors who are knowledgeable about deafness and sibling dynamics. The study recommends the development of tailored guidance and counseling programs that address the specific emotional, educational, and interpersonal needs of hearing siblings of deaf individuals. Additionally, it calls for greater public awareness and further longitudinal research to inform sustainable and inclusive support systems.
