Teaching English as a Foreign Language Overseas Journal (TEFLO) is a Journal of English Education Study Program of Universitas Kristen Indonesia Toraja (p-ISSN:2461-0240) is a scientific journal published third a year in April, August and December. It was established on 25th September 2016 for printing. TEFLO publishes articles as the results of research and scientific work either empirical or conceptual. This journal focuses on both research and conceptual articles done by any English teacher or lecturer within Indonesia or overseas countries. It allows any writer to submit up to 8-12 pages or equivalent with 2500 to 4000 words in range. It applies APA style in all articles submitted to this journal. While the scopes include English Language Teaching (ELT) in EFL or ESL context, English applied linguistics (EAL) in any form: empirical or conceptual. Abstract

Improving reading and writing beginning through the synthetic structure analysis method (SAS) as the focus of research departs from the reality in the field and the results of interviews with Indonesian teachers who are also grade 1 teacher at SD Negeri 2 Takimpo, generally in teaching reading and writing beginning using synthetic analysis structure methods but has not been implemented optimally, so students have not been able to read and write fluently. Based on this, this research is focused on learning to read and write beginning. The aim is to improve the reading and writing skills of the beginning students of class 1 SD Negeri 2 Takimpo by using the synthetic structure analysis method. The approach used in this research is a qualitative approach with an action research design. The research design was prepared using recycling cycle units including (1) planning, (2) implementation, (3) observation, (4) reflection. Reflection is carried out at the end of the cycle which is used as the design for the preparation of the next cycle planning. The stages of implementing the action are carried out collaboratively between researchers and practitioners. The form of learning to read and write beginning which is believed to be able to improve students' initial reading and writing skills is a form of learning that uses the implementation of the synthetic structure analysis method which consists of two parts, namely learning without using books and learning using books. The implementation is carried out in three stages, namely (1) the pre-reading and pre-writing stages, (2) the reading and writing stages, (3) the post-reading and post-writing stages. Based on process evaluation and evaluation of results in each lesson and based on success criteria, it was agreed in this study that it had been stated that (1) learning in the first cycle of action, both in terms of process and results had not been successful, there were still reading students who had not been able to pronounce letters perfectly, and in writing there are still deficiencies in letters in words, (2) learning in cycle II, both in terms of process and results have been successful, students are able to read and write sentences, (3) action learning in cycle III, both process and results have been successful, students are able to read and write using books.

Abstract

The Effectiveness of the Application of the Flipped Classroom Model in Class V Thematic Learning at SD Negeri Batulaccu Makassar. Skripsi of Elementary School Teacher Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, University of Bosowa. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the application of the flipped classroom model in the fifth-grade thematic learning at SD Negeri Batulaccu Makassar. The type of research used in this study is a quantitative experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The research sample is class V students, totaling 29 students. The results of the t-test study obtained the results of t Calculate t Table obtained the results of 11.341 2.052 then H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. Thus, it can be concluded that the flipped classroom model is effectively applied to the thematic learning of class V at SD Negeri Batulaccu Makassar.

Abstract

The aims of this study to develop a Responsible App Based on E-Learning as an Online Learning Support for teachers and students in elementary schools. This type of research is development research which refers to the research procedure proposed by Borg & Gall starting from the information gathering stage to the final product revision in the form of the Responsible App application. The research sample was teachers and students, a total of 51 people. The product development procedure begins with preliminary studies, planning, initial product development, validation, revision, limited trials, operational product revisions, operational trials to final product revisions. The data collection techniques used in this study were observations, interviews, questionnaires, and documentation techniques which were analyzed with percentage data analysis and criteria for validity, practicality and product effectiveness. The results showed that the development of the Responsible App application based on E-Learning can be used as Online Learning Support for students in elementary schools based on the validation result of 1.00 on very valid criteria. The results of the practicality test and product effectiveness test, respectively, have a percentage of 91.23% and 93.60% on the very practical and very effective criteria. Thus, it can be concluded that the development of the Responsible App application is appropriate to be used as a support for students' online learning in elementary schools. Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out What are the influence of ELLBOS in speaking anxiety at the eleventh-grade student of SMA Kristen Rantepao. In carrying out this study, researcher used quantitative methods. The subjects of this study were 24 students grade 11 students of Rantepao Christian High School. Data from this study was collected by using a questionnaire. After the data was collected the researcher then used the SPSS 26 program to analyze. The results of this study show that ELLBOS has an influence on students' speech anxiety, especially on the 3 types of speaking anxiety described in this study. Where in communication apprehension before treatment the average achieved by students only reached 3.22. After the treatment is given, the median score that students achieve is 4.00. In test-anxiety, before doing treatment, the average student only reached 2.98. Then after the researcher gave a treatment the normal number of students reached 4.00. Then fear of negative evaluation The average pre-test value only reached 3.14 before the treatment was given. After the treatment was given, the mean number of students reached 4,026. Where from all types of anxiety can be seen that students become more communicating and very enthusiastic. Students also do not feel afraid to make mistakes when learning is carried out. So it can be concluded that ELLBOS has an influence in students' speaking anxiety

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find the level of speaking anxiety of the third semester students’ of English education study program FKIP UKI Toraja. In analyzing the data of this research, the researcher employed quantitative method. The subject of this research were the third semester students’ of English education study program FKIP UKI Toraja. The data of this research was collected by questionnaire. The obtained data were analyzed using likert scale techniques to analyze data. The results of the research indicate that speaking anxiety is experienced by most students. The data obtained from the positive statement is 66,5% and from the negative statement is 65,9%. The mean score of the data is 66,2%. Based on the result of this study the researcher concluded that the level of speaking anxiety of the students’ was on medium anxiety

Abstract

This research discussed The Teaching Variations by Teachers To Increase Student Motivation In Learning English at SMPN 1 Rantetayo’. The goal of this research is to find out the what are the variations by teachers to increase students’ motivation in learning English at SMPN 1. In this research, the researcher used a qualitative method. The participants of the research were all the English teachers at the school. To collect the data, the researcher used observations, interview, and documentation as research instruments. The purposes of this study to find out what are the teaching variations by teachers to increase students’ motivation in learning English. In this study, researcher used qualitative methodology by involving students of SMPN 1 Rantetayo and English teachers as respondents. The researcher used interview, observation, and documentation to collect the data. Then, to nalyzed the data using the theory of Sugiono (2017:294). The result from this research is that the teachers at SMP 1 Rantetayo apply several variations to attract students' attention so that students are more motivated in the learning process, especially English language learning. The variation used are; Teaching Style Variation, Media Variation, and interaction Variation directly between teachers and students.

Abstract

MBKM is a policy that gives students the right to study three semesters outside of the study program. There are eight MBKM programs, namely teaching assistance, student fairs, internships, entrepreneurial activities, research, independent projects, humanitarian projects, and Thematic KKN. In this study, researchers used a qualitative descriptive method. . The participants in this study were students from the English study program. To collect data, researchers used interviews. Researchers used snowball sampling to select students to collect data. The results of the study finally concluded that the answers to the research questions about what were the shortcomings of students in participating in the MBKM apprenticeship program in the UKI Toraja English department, the researchers concluded that there was a lack of self-confidence, lack of information obtained by students about the MBKM program, even a lack of good public speaking make students not participate in the MBKM program

Abstract

The problem statement of this research is “how is the sixth-semester students’ English vocabulary size at English education study program of FKIP UKI Toraja”. The objective of this research is to know the sixth-semester students’ English vocabulary size at English education study program of FKIP UKI Toraja. The method used in this research namely the quantitative method. There were 30 students’ of the sixth semester students’ at English education study program of FKIP UKI Toraja which is taken randomly as the participants of this research. The students’ vocabulary size was measured using with Nation VST formula. It is found that the sixth-semester students’ English vocabulary size at English education study program of FKIP UKI Toraja at level 2.000-word level with 10 students’ who passed this level. Only 3 students’ passed the next level 3.000. At level 5.000, only 1 student’ passed. At the university level, only 1 student’ passed this level. No student’ can reach this level 10.000 since it comprises technical terms from different fields of study, and nouns that we rarely meet in our language use. In summary, the sixth-semester students’ English vocabulary at English education study program of FKIP UKI Toraja is still at the high-frequency level, with a vocabulary size of 2,000-word. As a result, individuals are still classified as having a low vocabulary and must enhance their vocabulary by studying the vocabulary of simplified reading books.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out the impact of reapplying face to face learning in the new normal era on the English achievement of the eighth-grade students at SMPN 1 Makale Selatan. In analyzing the data of this research, the writer used qualitative method. The subject of this research were the English teacher and students at SMPN 1 Makale Selatan. The data of this research was collected by doing interview. The obtained data were analyzed in three major phases namely reduction, data display, and conclusion. The result of the research found out some the impact of reapplying face to face learning in the new normal era on the student’s English achievement, the first there is students learning motivation, the second it is easier for students to understand the material provided by the teacher in class, and the third students English achievement have increased face to face learning is reinstated. Based on these findings, the researcher concluded that the current reapplying of face-to-face learning hase every positive impact on students’ English achievement

Abstract

This research was conducted based on the phenomenon at SDN 02 Makale Utara which showed a diversity of learning motivation between Non-PPA students and Child Development Center (PPA) students. This study aims to determine the difference in learning motivation between Non-PPA students and Child Development Center (PPA) students. The benefits of this research enrich the study of the learning motivation of Non-PPA students and Child Development Center (PPA) students in the world of Education. This type of research is comparative research. The study population was students of SDN 02 Makale Utara class IV, V, VI, and as a sample was the total number of 6 classes, then only 3 classes were taken with 10 children each class consisted of 5 Non-PPA students AND 5 PPA students classes IV, V and VI. Samples were taken by purposive sampling technique. Data collection methods and tools using learning motivation scales. The data analysis technique used is percentage descriptive analysis. The results showed a difference in learning motivation between Non-PPA students and Child Development Center (PPA) students. The percentage difference in learning motivation of Non-PPA students with PPA students based on indicators shows that the percentage value of PPA students is higher than Non-PPA students. Thus, there is a significant difference in learning motivation between Non-PPA students and Child Development Center (PPA) students, namely higher learning motivation of Child Development Center (PPA) students compared to Non-PPA students
