Abstract

Introduction: The Emergency Department (ED) is a critical service unit that requires rapid assessment and decision-making to ensure patient safety. The triage system plays a key role in prioritizing patients based on clinical severity. However, observations during a residency program at the Emergency Department of RSUD Dr. R. Sosodoro Djatikoesoemo Bojonegoro revealed that family members often experienced anxiety and dissatisfaction due to limited understanding of the triage process and ineffective communication from healthcare providers. These issues frequently led to misconceptions regarding waiting times and perceptions of unequal service. Objective: This community service activity aimed to improve family members’ understanding of the triage process, reduce anxiety related to waiting time, and strengthen trust in emergency care services. Method: A descriptive participatory approach was used through observation of ED service flow and interviews with nurses to identify communication gaps. An educational intervention was implemented using an audiovisual medium in the form of a short animated video explaining triage categories, which was displayed in the ED waiting area. Family members’ knowledge was assessed using pre-test and post-test questionnaires. Results: Post-test results showed a clear improvement in family members’ understanding of triage compared to pre-test findings, where most participants initially demonstrated low knowledge levels. Qualitative observations indicated reduced complaints, improved cooperation during admission, and more effective communication between nurses and families, although variability in staff communication skills remained a challenge. Conclusion: Audiovisual-based education effectively improved family understanding of the triage process and supported better communication and trust in emergency services. Structured educational media and consistent communication strategies are recommended to sustain service quality improvements in the ED.

Abstract

Introduction: Medical emergencies require rapid, accurate, and coordinated responses to prevent disability and mortality. Family members in the Emergency Department (ED) hold a crucial role as potential first responders within the chain of survival; however, their level of knowledge and preparedness is often inadequate. Objective: This emergency nursing residency project aimed to enhance the awareness and preparedness of patient families in responding to medical emergencies through a strucred educational intervention at RS Dik Pusdikkes Puskesad Jakarta in 2025. Method: A pre-post educational intervention design wa employed with a total of 120 ED patient family members, selected through lectures, instructional videos, and demonstrations of Basic Life Support (BLS), recovery position, and activation of the 119 emergency system. Data were collected using pre-post test tests and a preparedness questionnaire. Analysis included descriptive statistics and problem mapping using Fishbone, USG (Urgency-Seriousness-Growth), and SWOT. Result: Pre-test results indicated low baseline knowledge, with an average score of 42.5%, particularly in BLS (37%), recovery position (32%), and activation of the 119 emergency service (40%). Following the intervention, knowledge significantly increased to 86.3% (an improvement of 43.8%). The greatest improvement was observed in the activation of 119 (+51%) and the recovery position (+50%). Additionally, 87% of participants reported increased confidence in responding to emergencies, and 98% expressed high satisfaction with the program. Conclusion: The educational intervention effectively improved the knowledge, preparedness, and emergency response capability of patient families. This program is recommended to be implemented as a routine ED activity supported by standardized operating procedures, digital learning media, and facilitator training for ED nurses. These findings highlight that empowering patient families can contribute significantly to patient safety and srengthening hospital emergency system.

Abstract

Introduction: Hypertension remains a major global public health problem due to its high prevalence, chronic course, and substantial contribution to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Although pharmacological therapy is widely available, long-term blood pressure control remains suboptimal, largely due to inadequate implementation of self-care behaviors. Objective: This community service program aimed to enhance the capacity of patients with hypertension to manage their condition independently through comprehensive and sustainable self-care by integrating health education and health coaching. Method:The program was conducted at Wonomulyo Primary Health Care Center, Polewali Mandar Regency, on January 17, 2026, using a promotive and preventive approach. Implementation was carried out in several stages, including preparation, core activities, and evaluation. Core activities comprised participant registration and blood pressure measurement, hypertension-friendly exercise, interactive self-care education, and structured health coaching sessions. Result: A total of 80 participants were involved, consisting of 40 patients with hypertension and 40 supporting participants. Initial assessments revealed that most hypertensive participants had uncontrolled blood pressure. After the intervention, participants demonstrated improved understanding of hypertension management, increased motivation and self-efficacy, and greater readiness to adopt self-care behaviors. Health coaching facilitated the development of realistic self-care plans, while family and community involvement strengthened social support for sustained behavior change. Conclusion: Integrating self-care education and health coaching within primary health care–based community service effectively empowered patients with hypertension to improve self-management behaviors and shows promise as a sustainable model for hypertension control and health promotion.
