Abstract

Introduction: Anxiety is a psychological problem that often arises in patients before undergoing surgery, especially in the pre-anesthesia phase. This condition can affect physiological responses such as increased heart rate, irregular breathing patterns, and high blood pressure. At Ajibarang Regional General Hospital, most pre-anesthesia patients are known to experience moderate to severe anxiety, while standardized non-pharmacological interventions to address this problem are not yet available. Therefore, an effective and easy-to-implement approach is needed to help reduce patient anxiety before surgery. Objective: Assessing the effectiveness of deep breathing relaxation techniques as a non-pharmacological intervention in reducing anxiety levels in pre-anesthesia patients at Ajibarang Regional General Hospital. Method: The intervention was carried out using deep breathing relaxation techniques through controlled breathing exercises designed to stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, thereby creating a state of relaxation. The patients' anxiety levels were measured using the APAIS (Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale) instrument before and after the intervention. A total of 30 pre-anesthesia patients underwent this structured therapy process. Result: The results show a significant decrease in anxiety after administering deep breathing relaxation techniques. A total of 30 participants took part in the activity, predominantly adults (96.7%) and women (66.7%). The majority underwent major surgery (83.3%). Before the intervention, anxiety levels were in the moderate (93.3%) and severe (6.7%) categories. After being given deep breathing relaxation techniques, there was a decrease in anxiety, with 93.3% of respondents in the mild anxiety category and no one experiencing severe anxiety. Conclusion: Deep breathing relaxation techniques have been proven effective in reducing anxiety levels in pre-anesthesia patients at Ajibarang Regional General Hospital. This intervention can be recommended as a simple, safe, and easy-to-implement non-pharmacological procedure as part of preoperative preparation in the pre-anesthesia room.

Abstract

Introduction: Cardiac arrest is a life-threatening emergency that requires immediate and effective intervention. In many hospitals, the success rate of resuscitation remains low, partly due to inadequate Basic Life Support (BLS) skills among healthcare workers. Similar conditions were identified in the Emergency Department (ED) of RSUD dr. La Palaloi Maros, where several nurses had not received recent BLS refresher training, leading to decreased proficiency in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Objective: This community service program aimed to improve nurses’ competence in performing rapid and accurate resuscitation through a structured Basic Life Support (BLS) refresh training Method: The program was conducted in November 2025 using a structured health education approach consisting of education, demonstration, hands-on practice, and simulation. Participants received updated materials based on the 2020–2022 American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines, followed by supervised CPR and AED practice using manikins. Skills were evaluated qualitatively through direct observation, focusing on compression quality, ventilation techniques, AED use, and team coordination. Result The training resulted in a significant improvement in nurses’ knowledge and practical skills. Participants were able to initiate chest compressions more quickly, perform compressions and ventilations with better accuracy, and use Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) correctly. Team communication and coordination during cardiac arrest simulations also improved noticeably. Conclusion: BLS refresh training effectively enhanced the resuscitation abilities of ED nurses at RSUD dr. La Palaloi Maros. Regular and continuous refresher programs are recommended to maintain optimal CPR performance and ensure long-term readiness in emergency situations.

Abstract

Introduction: Syncope is a common occurrence in schools, especially among adolescents. First aid skills are crucial in health education, particularly in dealing with emergencies like syncope. Education and training in syncope first aid are needed to ensure students are better prepared and capable of handling emergency situations. One way to improve syncope first aid skills is through interactive demonstration and jigsaw learning methods. Objective: The aim of this community service activity is to provide knowledge and skills through education using demonstration and jigsaw methods regarding the management of syncope in adolescents in the school environment. Method: The activity was implemented through demonstration and jigsaw education. The activity was held for four days, from September 6-9, 2025, at SMPN 3 Kertosono. Participants were 20 students of SMPN 3 Kertosono. Result: The pre-test evaluation results, before being given education, showed that the majority (65%) of respondents were in the adequate category in their syncope first aid skills. The post-test results, after being given education, showed that all (100%) achieved the good category in their syncope first aid skills. Conclusion: Visual and auditory stimuli from demonstrations and jigsaw discussions are processed by the brain into understanding and skills. Repeated observation and practice strengthen motor memory, improving students' overall abilities. This method can enhance students' ability to handle syncope. It is recommended that this method be applied continuously in student learning to optimally improve abilities.

Abstract

Introduction: Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) in pregnant women remains a contributing factor to adverse maternal and fetal outcomes. The limited utilization of locally available nutrient-dense foods and the low capacity of community cadres to develop alternative high-protein supplementary foods (PMT) exacerbate this issue. Strengthening cadre competency in processing affordable and culturally appropriate local food sources is essential to support maternal nutritional improvement programs. Objective: The purpose of this service was to enhance the skills and knowledge of community health cadres in processing locally sourced supplementary foods (PMT) for pregnant women with CED, thereby increasing community-based nutritional resilience. Method: This public service was conducted by implementing a participatory training model involving demonstration, mentoring, and hands-on practice. Cadres were trained to process high-protein local food ingredients—especially fish and plant-based sources—into practical PMT products appropriate for pregnant women with CED. Pre–post assessments were used to measure cadre skill improvement, complemented by direct observation and documentation. Result: The service showed significant improvement in cadre competence related to selecting high-quality local food ingredients, applying hygienic food processing techniques, and producing high-protein PMT suitable for pregnant women with CED. Cadres successfully formulated several PMT variants such as shredded fish (abon lele), and fish nuggets. Post-intervention evaluation indicated increased cadre confidence, improved product safety, and greater readiness to support maternal nutrition programs at Posyandu. Additionally, cadres demonstrated improved understanding of balanced nutrition principles for pregnancy and the importance of local food optimization, with an average increase in knowledge of 32.3%. Conclusion: The mentoring program effectively strengthened cadre capacity in processing supplementary foods for pregnant women with CED using local food sources. This intervention contributes to improved community preparedness in addressing maternal nutrition problems and supports sustainable implementation of food-based solutions at the community level.

Abstract

Introduction: Pain following cesarean section (SC) is a major postoperative issue that can disrupt maternal recovery and breastfeeding. Pharmacological pain control alone is often insufficient, hence complementary approaches like hypnotherapy are essential. Objective: The aim of this activity is to enhance the competence of midwives and empower postpartum mothers in managing pain after sectio caesarea surgery through the application of hypnotherapy as a non-pharmacological intervention based on education and hands-on practice at Mgr. Gabriel Manek, SVD Hospital, Atambua. Method: Conducted from September–October 2025 at RSUD Mgr. Gabriel Manek, SVD., Atambua, this activity used an educational quasi-experimental approach involving 30 postpartum mothers and 10 midwives. Participants received training and practical hypnotherapy sessions. Pain intensity was measured using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) before and after intervention. Result: The average pain intensity decreased from 4.9 (moderate) to 2.8 (mild) after therapy. 83% of mothers experienced better relaxation and sleep, and 90% of midwives reported increased confidence in using hypnotherapy. From a psychological perspective, hypnotherapy has a significant impact on the emotional stability and self-confidence of postpartum mothers. Participants reported an increased ability to cope with pain without fear and experienced a greater sense of calmness during the recovery period. Conclusion: Hypnotherapy has been proven effective in reducing postpartum pain levels among mothers after sectio caesarea at Mgr. Gabriel Manek, SVD Hospital, Atambua. This program provides physiological, psychological, and educational benefits for postpartum mothers while enhancing midwives’ competence in implementing non-pharmacological interventions. The implementation of this program is recommended to be integrated into maternity care protocols in regional hospitals and adopted as a sustainable training model for healthcare professionals in border areas.
