Abstract

This research paper is focused to find figurative language in the lyrics of the song "K - 12" by Melanie Martinez. The researcher uses Perrine’s theory to find out the most dominant types of figurative language, implied meaning, and the type of figurative language.  This study is a descriptive study by applying text oriented approach in this research to obtain the require d data.  The song lyrics are categorized into 7 types of figurative languages, and interpreted to find the implied meaning of it. There are 7 types of figurative language used in the lyrics of   the   song   "K - 12"   by   Melanie   Martinez   with   a   total   of   7   metaphor, 2 personifications, 7 hyperboles, 8 imageries, 8 ironies, 5 symbol, and 2 paradoxes. Keywords : Perrine’s figurative language, literature, song lyric, text-oriented approach, Melanie Martinez K-12 album

Abstract

Current literature on the utilization of TikTok reveals the potentials of TikTok in English language education. As one of the most popular social media applications, TikTok has currently gained popularity. The role of TikTok in the field of education remains an interesting issue to study.  The research questions in this study were twofold: first, to investigate the social and interactive features of TikTok commonly used by students, and second, to investigate the perceived benefits of integrating TikTok as a learning tool for English as a Foreign Language development. The respondents for this study were students from 18 private and state universities in Indonesia. The data were collected through online questionnaires administered to 101 respondents. The research findings revealed that students generally have a positive view of TikTok as a platform to improve their English language skills. TikTok is recognized not only as an entertaining medium but also as a valuable tool for language learning. Its social and interactive features allow students to create content and participate in discussions of common interests actively. Thus, users can utilize the features and at the same time improve their English skills. In addition, this application has the potential to increase students’ learning motivation to learn English language.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the adoption of Learning Management Systems (LMS) in educational institutions, highlighting their potential and challenges. This study examines the utilization of LMS EL Nino to enhance language learning quality in the Accounting Department at Politeknik Negeri Semarang (POLINES) post-pandemic. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews and participant observations from 168 students and 5 instructors. Thematic analysis identified key challenges, including technical issues (80%), lack of interaction (70%), and academic dishonesty concerns (60%). Significant opportunities were also found, such as flexible learning schedules (90%), access to diverse resources (85%), and self-paced learning (80%). Students generally viewed LMS EL Nino positively, appreciating its convenience and structured platform. Addressing the identified challenges and leveraging the opportunities can optimize LMS EL Nino for improved language education in the post-pandemic era. Keywords: LMS EL Nino, challenges, Opportunity, Language Learning

Abstract

In this thesis, the writer  discuss two things related to the identity of the second-generation of Asian-American in America. First, the writer analyzing: What factors caused Cathy Park Hong to feel struggle to prove her identity and existence as a second generation of Korean-American in her society. The first is how does Cathy Park Hong's society make her feel struggled to prove her identity and existence as a second generation of Korean-American in Americar? Then the second is how does she overcome problems of her identity and existence as a Korean-American in her society in America. In this research, the writer uses qualitative descriptive research. This study uses data in the form of writing and descriptions of the data sources that have been collected. At the end of this thesis the writer concludes that: Hong has difficulty proving the existence of her ethnic identity as a Korean-American because she is too often traumatized by being abandoned by other people. Ethnicity and also often feel underappreciated by other ethnicities. Hong, in dealing with the problems she faces, prefers to store and vent her feelings of sadness into poetry.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze “The Picture of Dorian Gray”, a novel by Oscar Wilde. The topic of the research is the conflicts that happen in the character, and how the main character’s build the conflicts which are portrayed in The Picture of Dorian Gray. The purpose of this study is to analyze the conflicts. There are two kinds of conflict, namely internal conflict and external conflict, but this study only focuses on internal conflict. The methodology of this study used the descriptive qualitative method. A research method that emphasizes the elements contained in literary works such as characters, plot particularly about the internal conflict. This research uses Objective approach by M.H Abrams, intrinsic theories by Wellek and Warren. The results of this study, first, the writer explain about the internal conflicts are analyzed that is including physical conflicts, psychological conflicts, mental conflicts, moral conflicts, emotional conflicts. This study focuses on the conflicts that happen in the main characters. Meanwhile the main character’s builds the conflict has through the following steps: a) The beginning of conflict; b) The rising of conflict; c) The climax of conflict; d) The falling of conflict; e) The ending of conflict. Then, what are the conflicts experienced by the main characters in the novel. The writer concludes that the conflicts in the novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, especially the internal conflicts that exist in the main character using the theory that has been mentioned above. Keywords: Main Character, Conflict, Intrinsic Theory, The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Abstract

The purpose of this analysis is to describe the main characters and characterizations and find out the theme in The Fault in Our Star. The writer uses qualitative methods to conduct this research. For analysis, the writer uses a qualitative approach. This research is entitled "Life Struggle in The Fault in Our Stars by John Green". The main reason the writer chose this topic is because the novel tells about the life struggle against the characters' illnesses. The second element analyzed in this case is the theme, how does he survive in a sad situation. The third element in the novel that will be discussed is that the writer will discuss in more detail the life struggles faced by the characters in the novel. Finally, the writer hopes that this paper will be useful for the readers, especially to better understand the intrinsic elements of the novel.

Abstract

The use of figurative language adds to the unique of the literature, which can create an imaginative atmosphere for the reader. The analysis is about type’s figurative language of in Maya Angelou's. There are three poems the writer uses in thesis. The research method of this thesis is descriptive qualitative using a descriptive approach. The purpose of this analysis is to find figurative language in Maya Angelou's poem. The selected poems are "Still I Rise", "Caged Bird", and “Alone". The theory used in this research was the theory of figurative language by Gorys Keraf. In analyzing the data the writer analyzes figurative language found in the three poem and draws the final conclusion based on the results of the data analysis. In the analysis and discussion, it is found the meaning of the three poem by Maya Angelou. "Still I Rise" contains seven figurative language, i.e. symbol, simile, irony, repetition, personification, cynicism, metaphor. "Caged Bird" contains four types of figurative language, i.e. personification, metaphor, irony, symbol. "Alone" contains four types of figurative language, i.e. Personification, metaphor, symbol, repetition. The result of the analysis shows that there are many figurative language found in Maya Angelou's poem. Key words: Poetry, Figurative Language, Maya Angelou

Abstract

Students who enter junior high school must have master the basics of the international language, that is English language, so that when entering senior high school students are proficient in English. The purpose of this study is to find out whether the learnenglish.de website is able to influence students' skills in English, especially in mastering English vocabulary. This type of research was included in the type of qualitative research with a descriptive study approach. This research was conducted specifically, detail, and in depth with students. The results of this study include; Many students were helped by online courses, moreover free courses, in improving English skills. In addition, 86,4% of 44 students agreed that the learnenglish.de website was worth using to improve their English skills, especially in terms of vocabulary. Abstract

Critical thinking is important in learning English to understand and comprehend information. This study aims, first, to describe students’ critical thinking in learning agreement and disagreement using debate. Second, to describe the most component of critical thinking used by students in learning agreement and disagreement using debate. Last, to describe students’ perceptions of their critical thinking in learning agreement and disagreement using debate. The subject of this study is X PPLG 1 of SMK N 7 Semarang. This study uses a case study descriptive qualitative research method. The Researchers do observation, use video recording, and students’ work in collecting data. Also, we include students-interview to give validation in this study. In analyzing the data, we use five indicators of critical thinking, a theory from Ennis which are: Giving a simple explanation, Building fundamental skills, Concluding, Providing further explanation, set strategy, and technique. The findings of this study indicates that students can think critically and use five indicators of critical thinking in learning agreement and disagreement using debate. With mostly use of indicators; give a simple explanation and set strategies and techniques. The students combine small discussions and use translation apps in debate as critical thinking indicators of strategies and techniques. It is hoped that this research is useful in terms of implementing critical thinking in students. Critical thinking helps students learn deeper about information, especially English.

Abstract

Pragmatics is the branch of linguistics that deals with language in use and the contexts in which it is used. It encompasses phenomena including implicature, speech acts, relevance, and conversation, as well as non-verbal. One of the topics in pragmatics is speech acts. This research used a pragmatic approach. It is descriptive qualitative research, which takes the data from the dialogues in the movie entitled Turning Red that contain anger expressions. They were classified by using Mac Le Mouse’s classification of types of anger. This research aims to determine data regarding expressions of anger in the movie Turning Red. The data obtained becomes a sample to find out what meaning there is in the angry utterances in the dialogues between Mei Ling and Mother. There are 15 data of direct forms then 2 data of indirect forms. In addition, there are 7 types of anger that analyzed in this research. There are 4 data of judgmental anger, 4 data of volatile anger, 3 data of overwhelmed anger, 2 data of chronic anger, 2 data of self-inflicted, and 1 datum of paranoid anger. From the data analysis, daughter as the most dominant who tend to express direct form of anger. in addition, mother tend to express anger with direct and indirect. Key words: anger expression, script movie, speech act, speech functions,Turning Red..
