Abstract

This study investigates how expressive speech acts in Indonesian contribute to digital identity formation by an Indonesian Virtual YouTuber (VTuber). The research focuses on Mikazuki Arion, a VTuber on the YouTube platform, and aims to analyze how expressive speech acts such as praise, gratitude, greetings, complaints, and humor function in constructing a distinctive digital persona. Using a qualitative descriptive method with a sociopragmatic approach, data were obtained through observation and note-taking from Mikazuki Arion’s live broadcasts. The analysis examined the forms, functions, and pragmatic features of expressive speech acts that support self-representation in virtual communication. The findings show that expressive speech acts serve three key function in constructing VTuber identity: (1) establishing emotional intimacy and social bonds through repetition and affective language, (2) demonstrating authenticity and self-reflection via humor, irony, and stance softening, and (3) enhancing audience engagement through inclusive and performative interaction. These strategies enable Mikazuki Arion to present an appreciative, humorous, and relatable digital persona, reinforcing parasocial relationships and community belonging. The study concludes that expressive speech acts are not merely emotional expression but pragmatic tools for identity negotiation and relationship-building in digital interaction. Language thus becomes a central medium for performing self-representation and maintaining authenticity in Indonesian Vtuber culture, contributing to broader discussion of sociopragmatics and digital identity.

Abstract

This study is based on culture ideally should be a noble guideline that unites and elevates human dignity, but in practice it becomes a source of conflict between people .Culture is not a static entity, but rather an arena in which society assigns value and meaning. The purpose of this study is to reveal the contestation of culture and power in the novel Kubah. The theory used is Raymond Williams' Cultural Materialism, which focuses on the analytical framework of dominant, residual, and emergent cultures. This study uses a qualitative method with a textual analysis approach to the novel Kubah. theory. The main objective is to classify and analyze how these three cultures interact, clash, and shape the social landscape as embodied by the characters and main figures in the novel. The steps involved briefly consisted of reading the novel in depth, then classifying words, phrases, sentences, and quoted discourse related to cultural contestation. The data was then analyzed by interpreting the meaning of how the characters and narratives in the novel reflect and maintain their respective identities amid cultural tensions in society. The results of the study show that Karman, as the main character, was alienated by the dominant culture that destroyed communal relations in his village as a result of the events of 1965. However, he found acceptance again through residual culture, namely Javanese traditions and religious values. Karman created new meaning for himself, opening up a space for existence outside the pressures of dominant and residual culture.

Abstract

This research examined social inequality and the resulting conflicts in the movie "Fantastic Mr. Fox." The objectives were to identify and analyze the portrayal of social inequality within the film using Max Weber's theory of social stratification. Using descriptive qualitative method, the study involved detailed analysis of the movie script to uncover these themes. The findings revealed that the farmers, representing the upper class, oppress the animal community, which symbolizes the lower class. This dynamic led to various conflicts, highlighting the struggles and resistance of the underprivileged against the powerful. Film analysis demonstrated how animated films can reflect real-world social hierarchies. In conclusion, the research provided a deeper understanding of the use of popular media to comment on societal issues and emphasizes the importance of empathy and collective action to address inequality. This study contributes to the field by showcasing the potential of animated films as tools for social commentary and education. This study highlights the capacity of animated films to serve as effective mediums for social critique, urging viewers to recognize and challenge societal inequalities. The findings underscore the necessity for empathy and collective action in addressing systemic oppression

Abstract

This paper aims to find out the real role of Severus Snape in the Harry Potter book series by J. K. Rowling. This research is also intended to describe Severus Snape's efforts in defeating Lord Voldemort as well as to figure out the characterization and description of the actions taken by Snape; the writer uses a deconstruction analysis proposed by Jacques Derrida. The image of Severus Snape's character and the relationship between the character's image and the forms of deconstruction are identified by the deconstruction analysis. The method used in this research is the descriptive qualitative method. This research tried to examine the elements of deconstruction of the character Severus Snape in the Harry Potter series of novels, interpreting the new meanings contained implicitly in the novels. The results of the research showed that Severus Snape is described as a character who is rude, arrogant, and cruel. Through the perspective of deconstruction, it was found that Snape has characteristics that are paradoxical to what appears on the surface. He is a caring, helpful, and brave character. In addition, it was found that nine actions of Severus Snape were intended to protect Harry Potter and to defeat Lord Voldemort. The results of the analysis suggested that Severus Snape has a significant role in moving the story. Through his role in the story, Harry Potter can defeat the antagonist or villain in the Harry Potter Series.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the extent of vocabulary and kinship changes in Javanese dialects in Yogyakarta Special Region between 2019 and 2023. Data tapping was conducted at a number of observation points, namely in the villages of Kebonrejo (Kulonprogo), Pakem Binangun (Sleman), Segoroyoso (Bantul), Planjan (Gunungkidul), and Ngringin (Gunungkidul). The data were obtained using the basic Morris Swadesh vocabulary, the universal vocabulary of the world's languages. By looking at the data obtained from the same observation points in 2019 and 2023, it is possible to compare the vocabulary developed in Javanese dialects. From the data comparison, it is also possible to compare the level of kinship between dialects to see if there is a shift in their status from different speech, subdialect, dialect, or language. The data were obtained by tapping method with recording and note-taking techniques, then analyzed by comparison, introspection, and dialectometry methods, and presented by formal methods in the form of tables and figures and informal methods in the form of ordinary narratives. The results show changes in vocabulary and kinship levels caused by internal elements, namely vocabulary development, heterogloss, and dialectometry, and external language, namely factors of dialect supporting communities, dialect area development, and the Covid-19 pandemic.
