Abstract

Inflammation is a tissue response towards damaging physical or chemical stimulations. One local sign of inflammation is edema (tumor). Usage of natural herbal medicine has become an alternative way to prevent inflammation. The extract of umbi sarang semut (Myrmecodia tuberosa Jack) has anti-inflammation, anti-bacterial and antioxidant properties. This study is to determine the anti-inflammation effect of the topical application of Myrmecodia tuberosa Jack ethanol extract. This study used 28 white male rats previously induced with carragenin 2% b/v 0,5ml and divided into 4 treatment groups. Groups 1,2 dan 3 were given the ethanol extract with a concentration of 0,5 %; 1%; 2% respectively after induction and on 24, 48 and 72 hours after the first application. Group 4 was the untreated control group. Each treatment group were extracted for their inflammation exudate fluid from their backs using a 1 ml syringe. Edema fluid volume was measured. The results showed a decrease of edema fluid volume on all treatment groups. Statistical data analysis showed a significant difference between group 2 and the negative control; also between group 3 and the negative control. In conclusion, the topical ethanol extract of Myrmecodia tuberosa Jack can reduce inflammation reactions. Keywords: Myrmecodia tuberosa Jack, anti-inflammation, topical, edema fluid volume

Abstract

Composite resin is the most frequently material used for restoring teeth but still failure cases are seen which leading to microleakage. Microleakage might be attributed to various factors, one of them is bonding agent. Various generations of bonding agents have been introduced to overcome the microleakage. The aim of this study was to evaluate the microleakage of composite restorations using the fifth and seventh bonding agent. Class I cavities (3X2X2 mm) were prepared on the occlusal surfaces of 32 human upper premolars. Teeth were classified into two groups according to the type of bonding agent used (n =16). Group I: Fifth Generation of Bonding Agent-Adper Single Bond2. Group II: Seventh Generation of Bonding Agent-Single Bond Universal. All cavities were restored with Filtek Z250 XT composite resin, stored in sterile aquades water at 370C for 24 h. The root apices were sealed with sticky wax, and all the surfaces, except for 2 mm from the margins, were coated with nail varnish. The teeth were immersed in a 1% methylene blue dye solution for 24 h, and then rinsed in running water, blot-dried and sectioned longitudinally through the center of restorations from the buccal to palatal surface. The sections were blindly assessed for microleakage of dye penetration by using a stereomicroscope. Data were collected and statistically analyzed by independent t -test. There was no significant difference (p>0,05) between two groups. The conclusion is fifth generation of bonding agent revealed less leakage compared to the seventh generation even statistically there was no significant difference. Keywords:Microleakage, fifth generation of bonding agent, seventh generation of bonding agent.

Abstract

One of the aesthetic problem which had bother and become a complaint was teeth discoloration that can be overcome by dental bleaching procedures. The use of tooth whitening ingredient can cause side effects such as tooth sensitivity and mucous irritation. Therefore, many researchers have been looking for a safer alternatives materials to be used as tooth whitening ingredients including Strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa) contain of elegat acid and malic acid and Lime (Citrus aurantifolia) contain of citric acid which have potential to whiten the teeth. The purpose of this research is to determine differences strawberry and lime fruit as a natural ingredient of tooth whitening. This research used in vitro laboratory experiment method by using 30 post-extraction premolar on teeth divided into three groups, namely the treatment of strawberry concentration of 100% (K1), the treatment group lime concentration of 2.5% (K2 ) and the treatment control group carbamide peroxide 10% (K3). Color changes measurements was observed pretest and posttest by 15 observers using Shade Guide VITAPAN classical. The research showed that strawberry concentration of 100% have an average difference in the color of teeth is 6.40, lime concentration of 2.5 at 6.20 and carbamide peroxide 10% as the control group amounted to 3.20. Abstract

Palatal rugae or plica palatinae transversae are irregular and asymmetrical ridges on mucosa membrane which extend laterally from incisive papilla and anterior of palatal raphe. Palatal rugae are protected by cheeks, lips, tongue and buccal pad from incineration and trauma. The use of palatal rugae as an alternative way to identify human is needed in many occurrences such as accident, criminal and disaster. Palatal rugae patterns are vary and not identical in each person but have some similarities within family. This can be caused by hereditary and polygenic inheritance mechanism of palatal rugae. This study aimed to identify palatal rugae pattern similarities between father and his biological son in Minangkabau ethnic. This study is a cross-sectional study. The samples used in this study were 78 pairs of fathers and their biological sons. Alginate impression material was used to record the upper jaw.
