Abstract

Society 5.0 demands adaptive educational transformation, including in Islamic education curricula. This study employs a systematic literature review to analyze the management of curriculum adaptation in Islamic education to address the challenges of Society 5.0, with an emphasis on the integration of Islamic values. Using the Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, ERIC, and ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global databases, a literature search was conducted using keywords related to “Islamic education,” “curriculum adaptation,” “Society 5.0,” and “Islamic values.” The selection process, involving screening of titles, abstracts, and full-text articles, along with quality assessment using the JBI Critical Appraisal Tools, resulted in a synthesis of 65 selected articles. Data analysis was conducted through open coding and axial coding to identify domains of adaptation challenges, management strategies, and implementation recommendations. Key findings indicate that adaptation challenges include technological infrastructure readiness, educator competencies, the balance between tradition and modernity, resistance to change, and curriculum content formulation. Effective management strategies focus on educator capacity building, infrastructure strengthening, curriculum design grounded in Islamic and digital values, change management, quality evaluation, and collaboration. Implementation recommendations emphasize a holistic approach, prioritizing teacher development, integrating Islamic values as a core element, and strengthening partnerships. This study makes a theoretical contribution by offering a cohesive, synthesized framework for managing the adaptation of Islamic education curricula in the digital age, and provides a practical strategic roadmap for Islamic educational institutions.

Abstract

South Africa’s National Development Plan 2030 positions digital transformation as a key strategy for advancing education within the digital economy. This study explored the challenges faced by six purposively selected departmental heads in leading digital transformation across three schools in Mpumalanga Province. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed thematically. Grounded in the right to development, the study emphasizes the need for inclusive professional development for both teachers and school management teams. Findings revealed that older teachers’ anxiety toward digital tools affected departmental heads’ digital leadership. Departmental heads also experienced self-doubt due to limited ICT skills, reducing their capacity to mentor technologically skilled early-career teachers. Their ineffectiveness was further linked to limited in-service training, lack of postgraduate funding opportunities, and inadequate school- and district-level support. The study recommends continuous professional development, funding for specialized postgraduate training, and strategic support to strengthen departmental heads’ digital leadership.
