Abstract

This paper argues that the uptake of social media by the dance community due to COVID-19 challenges the conventional consideration of dance as a live performance and gratifies people with wellbeing experiences. Grounded on Digital Research Method and Theoretical sampling, findings reveal that though the dance community was seriously impacted by the COVID-19 in 2020, they challenged space by re-defining innovative strategies that fuse with the digital world to limit stress, recreate a social connection and empathy. As a strong response to COVID-19, dancers invaded the social media, stimulating various ways to observe, create, and understand space during confinement.

Abstract

The spread of the COVID-19 virus is a huge crisis that the whole world has had to face recently. Millions of lives were lost due to the spread of this virus, and Sri Lanka also had to face the impact of this. In this situation, almost every country in the world has introduced various health guidelines to protect people from the COVID-19 virus. The purpose of this research study was to identify the new trends in communication between each culture in Sri Lanka, specific to the COVID-19 guidelines, and communication during the period of the spread of the Covid virus. COVID-19 can be considered a health as well as a cultural crisis. Studying the behavior of the media in relation to this period, as well as how to inform people by exchanging information between each culture, was focused here. During the study, the data were collected by studying media reports, the use of literature, and the Internet. Accordingly, it was possible to determine how cultures worked more closely during the period when the new conditions of normalization were implemented, compared with the period in which people lived before. It was emphasized that the use of intercultural communication can be identified through measures taken by the government in such a way that it does not interfere with communication between people not only from one linguistic community, but also people with diversity in terms of religious, cultural, and social backgrounds. Thus, this study realized that cultural crises were overcome to a large extent with the help of intercultural communication, which was effectively carried out by the government of Sri Lanka for proper communication with the citizens of Sri Lanka, so-called multicultural state.

So far, Indonesia has only been known as a big market for global products. So positioning Indonesia as a country that making domestically produced products as well as a producer country becomes a very important nation step. President Jokowi through his Instagram often promotes products that made in the country, and the domestic consumers often responded positively. This study seeks to understand how President Jokowi promoted locally made products through his Instagram. Using literature study as a data collection method, content analysis as an analytical technique, and the AIDA Model as a theoretical framework to describe how the uploaded promotional content was being rolled out. This study found that the President's promotional posts are in line with the AIDA framework, and in his posts, the president not only creates awareness and interest, but also seeks to build a sense of pride and confidence towards the locally made products and the nation production capabilities amongst the audiences, particularly the followers. Abstract

The demonstration occurred because of a form of rejection of one thing done by policymakers in making a regulation that would be implemented as a whole. In addition, demonstrations are also one of the ways that have been arranged to convey g the aspirations that want to be conveyed to a problem. In addition, several articles in the Job Creation Law are being submitted to the Constitutional Court for Judicial Review because they are considered to have legal defects in their discussion, where several laws are considered too partial to state organizers. The public assesses the urgency, where the ratification of the Job Creation Law looks like a rush and a rush, so it lacks input from various parties. Recently, there have been large-scale demonstrations carried out in various regions in Indonesia related to the rejection of the ratification of the Job Creation Law, commonly called the Omnibus Law, or it can be said to be the Sapu Jagat Law. This is due to the large amount of speculation and information that develops in the community, causing a negative sentiment from the public toward the government. By using framing theory, the author found that this negative sentiment arises as a result of defects in public communication conveyed from the government as stakeholders and policymakers and regulations that will be applied to the community. In the end, this negative sentiment caused a very massive impact, namely the increasing national instability.

Abstract

In the contemporary world, Public Service Broadcasting plays a decisive and challenging role in creating an informed citizenry through editorial independence, diversity of content, freedom of expression, audience participation, and active democracy. However, in Sri Lanka, the opposite is true, where there are no public service media, but state-owned and privately-owned media enterprises. This paper looks at the absence of public service broadcasting in Sri Lanka, its effect on a democratic society, and its resistance to the initiative. The case study desk review approach was employed to investigate public service broadcasting in the Sri Lankan context. The study finds that in the absence of public service media, citizens tend to consume information reproduced and delivered through a hegemonic media landscape, compiled according to the agenda of radio and television station owners. Such content has been found to be devoid of professionalism, editorial independence, diversity, and pluralism, leading to misrepresentation of facts in the coverage of conflicts, controversial issues, and elections, and by extension the destruction of society. In Sri Lanka, a developing country, state-owned media must be transformed into public service media. The selfish interests of political parties, policymakers, bureaucracy, and trade unions and limited awareness amongst the public makes this task difficult. The study recommended to appoint a public commission to identify processes and actions to transform State owned media to public service media. Nevertheless, suggests to launch a public campaign that would educate the public and influence policy makers’ thinking towards liberating State owned media from government control.

Abstract

This study aims to explain the fantasy theme on the replication of the song Yang Terdalam. The background of this research is the high trend of the replication from December to January 2022 on TikTok. Users on TikTok have their own identity. Identity is an absolute requirement for a user to participate in social networking services. In addition, participation is an indicator of active users in digital culture or a culture where people can produce and consume, distribute and replicate memes in their own way. This shows that users as cultural prosumers do both production and consumption in replicating memes. They dramatize messages into fantasy chains to create effective, fun, entertaining communication and build relationships between users. The author applied a descriptive approach and a conversational analysis method with fantasy theme analysis techniques. User comments are narratives that explain the dramatic message conveyed by the user. The research object is three video replications on TikTok. The results showed three fantasy themes, namely resistance to performance hegemony which was built by two types of fantasy, there are constructive satire on ugliness and metaphors of anime characters, objectification of disabilities, and domestication of women. This suggests that a fantasy can be a situation where the rhetoric is repeated within the group. When fantasy becomes a rhetorical vision, users have created dramatization

Abstract

This research aims to provide information related to news framing analysis on CNN Indonesia online media in the Bali earthquake. This framing analysis research uses the approach by Zhongdang Pan and Gerald M. Kosicki. The method used is descriptive qualitative. The results of this study are based on the use of four structures including 1) The syntactic structure in this news has a headline, 2) the script structure in this news shows that the main purpose of this news is to provide information about the natural earthquake disaster that occurred in Bali, 3) The theme emphasized in this news is about the M 4.8, 4) There are three rhetorical structures in the news, which are shearing, landslides, rock falls. It can be concluded that the syntactic aspect in the headline section is mentioning the Earthquake in Bali. The lead and background information contains information from BMKG. For the quotation section, there is only one source, namely Daryono. Then, CNN Indonesia online media does not write statements and opinions in the news. The script element in this media has reached perfection, where CNN has used the 5W + 1H elements in writing its news properly and correctly. The thematic element in CNN Indonesia media is explanatory coherence. Lastly, the rhetorical element in the media uses a choice of substitute words that are rarely known by the public

Abstract

E- learning was introduced to tertiary education during the Covid 19 Pandemic. Therefore, the study aimed to investigate the opportunities and challenges faced by undergraduates in state universities in Colombo District in relation to e-learning. Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) was used as the main theoretical framework and the qualitative approach was applied through interviews and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs). Data were collected from all state universities in Colombo district using purposive sampling. The results showed that the majority of undergraduates have a positive attitude towards e- learning. Because e-learning is timesaving, convenient and cost-saving during the pandemic and socio-economic issues in the country such as fuel issues, power cuts etc. On the other hand, the undergraduates faced some challenges in e- learning such as a lack of ICT tools and equipment, connectivity issues, the cost of data, background noises, a lack of interaction with peers and teachers, health issues such as eye issues, anxiety etc. The results showed that the challenges of e-learning mainly occur due to the issues connected to ICTs. Therefore, the responsible authorities should take proper measures to provide adequate ICT infrastructure and resources for students to have a convenient and flexible e- learning system. In this context, it is also important that the state universities make the arrangements to have flexible learning for undergraduates. Therefore, hybrid learning allows undergraduates to attend traditional face to face sessions while also attending online classes, reducing transport issues, expenses, optimizing ICT infrastructure and resource utilization.

Abstract

The South China Sea (SCS) is an area of water endowed with rich natural resources and a strategic location for geopolitical interests. As the consequence, China has put the SCS in its list of the Great Rejuvenation Goals. China's modus operandi to attain its SCS ambition has been various in the way. It ranges from making land reclamation and artificial islands, sending citizens to artificial islands and further applying its jurisdiction and administration, conducting military activities, and wielding diplomacy efforts. Another path China undergoes to manifest its maritime empire in the SCS is media framing. This study highlights how China employs Global Times, its state-owned media, to construct the mind frame that the SCS belongs to China. To achieve the objective of the study, this paper use Zhongdang Pan and M Kosicky's framing analysis to identify Global Times' type of framing and qualitative method to seek the intention of the frame. This paper finds that Global Times assist the Chinese government in claiming the SCS by syntactic and rhetorical framing; dominantly quoting pro-China experts/academics/statesman, emphasising 'sovereignty' words and displaying a narration that the SCS belongs to China, using Chinese to name the islands in the SCS, and echoing 'no conflict in the SCS' rhetoric. This study proves that China is also pursuing its South China Sea Dream by exercising noopolitics.
