Abstract

The development of Islam in the Indonesian archipelago is closely tied to the networks of scholars, including those in the Mataraman region, where Mbah Yahuda played a pivotal role in transmitting Islamic knowledge in the southern area of Java. This study contends that Mbah Yahuda significantly contributed to the spread of Islam through pesantren, which served as centers of classical Islamic scholarship. His long-standing influence is seen in the establishment of major pesantren such as Lirboyo, Ploso, and Jampes in Kediri, as well as others in Trenggalek, Ponorogo, and Pacitan. These institutions share genealogical and intellectual connections that can be traced back to him. Preliminary genealogical data reveals three theories regarding Mbah Yahuda’s origins: a Middle Eastern lineage linked to Sayyidina Hamzah, evidenced by the historical gifting of the KamKam Sword; a Cirebon connection suggested by the presence of a nagasari tree near his tomb; and a Mataram royal lineage supported by genealogical records. His descendants, particularly the Egyptian clan, are associated with pesantren traditions focused on Qur’anic studies and Sufism, while others are known as scholars and government officials. Overall, the scholarly networks rooted in Mbah Yahuda underline the strategic contribution of Indonesian Islamic traditions to sustainable development goals, especially in quality education, peacebuilding, and cultural preservation.

Abstract

Reading proficiency is crucial for academic success, yet many university students, including those at Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta, struggle with comprehension due to limited vocabulary, lack of critical thinking, low motivation, and traditional teaching methods; thus, innovative strategies like visual media are needed to foster interest and improve reading skills. One such medium, the wall magazine, has shown promise in primary education but remains underexplored in higher education, prompting this study to evaluate its effectiveness in enhancing students’ reading abilities and to provide insights for more engaging and interactive pedagogical approaches. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method with purposive sampling, involving 39 second-semester English Education students at Yogyakarta State University and several key informants to explore the effectiveness of wall magazine media in enhancing reading skills. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using qualitative descriptive techniques with triangulation strategies to ensure validity and credibility. This study confirms that wall magazine media effectively enhances reading skills by increasing student motivation, comprehension, and engagement. The project-based and collaborative nature of the media fosters critical thinking, creativity, and a sense of ownership in learning. While students and lecturers responded positively, improvements in content updates and display logistics are still needed. Therefore, integrating wall magazine projects into the curriculum offers a sustainable, student-centered approach to developing literacy and 21st-century skills.

Abstract

This study examines how community-based arts education governance at Sanggar Juju in Semarang contributes to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4 (Quality Education) and 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) through cultural preservation. Utilizing qualitative methods, data were collected via observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data analysis included reduction, presentation, and verification, with triangulation used to ensure validity. The findings reveal that the success of Sanggar Juju in managing its programs and growing its membership to 125 students over six years is underpinned by governance practices such as a policy framework, organizational values, participatory principles, and accountability systems. The studio promotes SDG 4 by offering culturally relevant and inclusive learning opportunities in traditional dance and supports SDG 11 by preserving intangible cultural heritage, strengthening social cohesion, and boosting community-based tourism in Kandri Village. Despite these successes, the organization still employs a centralized leadership model, which limits transparency and participation, posing risks to its sustainability and external funding opportunities. The study recommends adopting a collaborative governance model to improve accountability mechanisms, ensuring long-term organizational resilience and enhancing its contribution to the SDGs.
