Abstract

Islamic boarding schools are seen as a non-formal educational institution that holds religious-based programs for its students. Nevertheless, Islamic boarding schools are often used as a legitimacy of gender injustice. This issue definitely needs to be reviewed by looking directly at the actual reality of education in it and its influence on the thinking of the students regarding gender equality. Thus, this study took the subject of Fathul Muin Islamic boarding school research by using Paulo Freire's philosophy of humanism because with his philosophical theory it can be studied about the role of Islamic Boarding School in providing awareness, especially for female students about gender equality and justice of rights. The results show that Fathul Muin Islamic boarding school education greatly influences the mindset of its students. The results of the interviews show that there has been an awareness of gender equality. However, the thing that needs to be criticized lies in the learning patterns of Islamic boarding schools which are not much different from other Islamic boarding schools, so reforms need to be carried out as a process towards values of liberation, humanism and equality.

Abstract

This research project aims to explore the relationship between piety, initiative, and the process of self-empowerment in a female cleric, drawing on Saba Mahmood’s theory of piety. The empirical evidence is based on ethnographic research into the transformation of Nyai Khairiyah Hasyim’s religious authority. This article presents two key propositions. First, it analyzes the transformation of Nyai Khairiyah Hasyim, who promoted Islamic boarding school education and became the first female school instructor in the city of Makkah. Second, it examines how her contributions and fatwas have brought about significant shifts in the perception of women in public spaces within a maledominated society. By reflecting on her personal experiences and efforts as a woman and cleric rooted in Islamic boarding school traditions, she has demonstrated a depth of knowledge and insight that challenges the notion of formal diplomas. Her fatwa products include allowing female students to wear hijabs during marching activities, innovating the rubu’ hijab model, and advocating for the family planning (KB) program.

Abstract

The dowry has often been a trigger for domestic violence due to misunderstandings surrounding its purpose. It is assumed that once the husband has paid the dowry to the wife, he has full rights over her. This research aims to explore how dowry exploitation occurs among the Yelipele indigenous people. The study employs qualitative research with a sociologicalnormative approach, focusing on the Yelipele Muslim indigenous society in Jayapura. The findings indicate that injustice and violence, such as physical and psychological abuse by men, persist due to dowry payments. This violence is rooted in the dominance of traditional customs, the patriarchal system, lack of education, and the inability to control emotions.

Abstract

The role of gender in society has undergone significant changes in recent decades. Social transformation, economic advancements, and the increasing advocacy for gender equality have influenced the dynamics of family law. This research aims to analyze the impact of changing gender roles on family law dynamics in the context of the modern era. In this case study, the researcher will examine how changes in gender roles affect child custody, roles in marriage and divorce, and other legal implications using a qualitative approach by collecting data from various sources, such as literature reviews, documentation, and analysis of related legal cases. Data analysis will be conducted using a comparative descriptive approach to identify changes occurring in family law and its relation to changing gender roles. The results of this study indicate that changes in gender roles within family law have significant impacts in the modern era. These changes include the expected roles of husbands and wives in marriage, child custody after divorce, as well as legal protection against gender discrimination and access to fair legal services. Although challenges still exist, it is important for society and the legal system to support these changes and address existing barriers. Thus, marital and divorce relationships can become more balanced, fair, and consider the best interests of the couples and children involved.

Abstract

This paper examines the Qur’ānic transposition of the concept in Bible (Al-Kitab) regarding the creation of women originating from the rib of men. This discussion does not seem to emerge from an explicit narrative in the Qur’anic text but rather from interpretations and hadiths narrated by Bukhari and Muslim. This study addresses two main questions: (1) What is the concept of the initial creation of women in the Qur’an and Al-Kitab? (2) How does the Qur’an transpose this concept to Al-Kitab? Using Julia Kristeva’s intertextuality approach, the research reveals that the transposition involves several elements: namely; the connection of substance or excerpt regarding the purpose of the creation of pairs to complement each other and produce offspring, the contradiction between the text of the Qur’an and Al-Kitab which contains elements of haplology occurs in the abrogation of the Qur’anic text which states that women come from the ribs of men, defamiliarization or changes in meaning conveyed by the Qur’an implicitly about the initial creation of women and demystification which occurs when the Qur’anic text changes the definition of the initial creation of women who are the same as men so that this difference creates Qur’anic opposition to the concept of Al-Kitab or conversion.

Abstract

This article examines gender representation in the Islamic da’wah program on Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI) Purwokerto. The study employs a descriptive-qualitative method, using Norman Fairclough’s discourse analysis approach. Fairclough’s model consists of three levels of analysis: text analysis, discourse practice, and sociocultural practice. The text analysis in this study focuses on the event format and the materials from the guest speakers. Discourse practice analysis looks at how texts are produced and consumed, while sociocultural practice analysis addresses three aspects: situational, institutional, and social. The research findings reveal that gender representation in Islamic da’wah/religious programs on radio in Purwokerto still reflects gender inequality. This inequality can be observed through Fairclough’s three levels of discourse analysis. At the text level, some guest speakers continue to present a mindset that positions men in a superior role compared to women. RRI has not yet provided a space for the ongoing transformation of ideas about equality, such as issues related to early marriage, human trafficking, and so on. The themes discussed mainly focus on morals, jurisprudence, and worship. At the discourse practice level, the guest speakers and broadcasters involved are predominantly male. At the sociocultural practice level, the study shows that the gender representation in da’wah programs at RRI Purwokerto reflects an unequal gender construction in the broader society. This research recommends that radio managers provide more opportunities for female guest speakers and incorporate themes on gender justice.

Abstract

Gender inequality is not solely a social issue; it extends to economic, cultural, political, and scientific dimensions, often compounded by misinterpretations of religious texts. This research arises from the author’s concern regarding the marginalization of women, often perceived as second-class citizens in patriarchal societies. This concern is explored through the lens of gender equality issues depicted in the novel “Perempuan yang Memesan Takdir”. The study aims to analyze the novel and present descriptive findings on various forms of gender injustice, employing a religious perspective grounded in gender equality theory and the concept of mubadalah. The research adopts a content analysis method to interpret the findings within the novel. These findings are categorized into five forms of gender injustice: marginalization, subordination, stereotyping, violence, and the imposition of double workloads. The results reveal that gender inequality stems from three main factors: (1) power dynamics and social stratification that restrict women in multiple domains, (2) cultural and traditional practices that perpetuate patriarchal values, and (3) societal structures that hinder the realization of gender equality.

Abstract

The socialization of positive masculinity perspectives among men is an effort to strengthen the positive aspects of masculinity in society. The goal is for men who embrace positive masculinity to promote equality and reduce genderbased violence. This research aims to describe the roles that men with a positive masculinity perspective can play within the family and how these roles can help reduce the potential for sexual violence. This study employs a literature review and content analysis, focusing on 10 positive values from the positive psychology/positive masculinity framework. The analysis was conducted on the Instagram accounts @bapak2id, @ id_ayahasi, @bumilpamil.id, @ayahbercerita.id, and @ lakilakibaru. The findings identify three key roles for men with a positive masculinity perspective: active involvement in parenting, participation in pregnancy and birth preparation, and fostering healthy family relationships. These roles align with Islamic teachings. The analysis of feeds, comments, and discussions (both offline and online) from these five accounts indicates strong support for the elimination of sexual violence in society.
