Abstract

Indonesia is one of the big countries in the world consists of many islands which are separated by oceans and islands that has many tribes as well as their languages. One of the tribes in Indonesia is Bataknese. Batak are an ethnic group from North Sumatra. Most of Bataknese are living in North Sumatra. In this contrastive analysis, the writer chooses two languages, first, English as the source language and Batak Toba language as the target language. The writer contrast the form, distribution, function and meaning of those two language and focused on the prfixes. There is correspondence between English and Batak Toba prefixes in terms of form, that is no prefix in Batak Toba can be attached to cluster; There is partly correspondence between English and Batak Toba prefixes in terms of distribution that there is no prefix in English that can be attached to base form of Adverb, either does Batak Toba; There is correspondence between English and Batak Toba prefixes in terms of function; There is partly correspondence between English and Batak Toba prefixes in terms of meaning of both language is not similar in whole. Therefore, in generally, the writer concludes that English and Batak Toba language are partly correspondence in prefixes. Keywords ; Prefixes , Batak Toba Language , English

Abstract

Differentiated Learning is the process of tailoring lessons to meet each student's interests, needs, and strengths, the goal of this research is to analyze the teachers’ strategies and obstacles in using differentiated learning in Sekolah penggerak. The subjects were four teachers from the Sekolah Penggerak namely SMP Negeri 4 Pahae Julu and SMP Negeri 2 Siatas Barita in North Tapanuli in North Sumatra. Interviews, observation, and documentation were applied to collect the data. Qualitative descriptive was the type of approach used in this study. The data was analyzed using triangulation consisting of three stages, namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion Strategies used by the teachers to accommodate the students' needs were the differentiated content, process, and product by mapping the students’ needs based on the students’ readiness, interests and learning profiles. Thus, this research concludes that the strategies in differentiated learning in class were effective and could help the students to understand the material according to the student’s needs. For further research, the researcher might scrutinize the effectiveness of differentiated learning in teaching English for student outcomes and the schools, the obstacles in teaching using differentiated learning were, that the teachers should facilitate workshops or training about differentiated learning.

Abstract

Animation video is an alternative media to teach listening at senior high-level students. The purpose of this study to improve the listening skill of eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Stabat at Kabupaten Langkat in the academic year 2024/2025. This study used a classroom action research method by applying animation video as an alternative teaching media. The population of this study is the eleventh-grade students consists of ten classes with a total number is 351 students. The sample of this study is 36 students (XI IPA 1). The researchers used purposive sampling to achieve the aim of study. To collect the data the researchers distributed multiple choice of listening test. The finding of this research showed that in pre-test, the students got mean score 43,75. In cycle 1, the mean score is 48,6. In cycle 2, the mean score is 60,5 or categorized moderate. In post-test, the mean score is 75,8 categorized good. So, it can be concluded that the use of animation video improved the eleventh-grade students’ listening skill at SMA Negeri 1 Stabat Kabupaten Langkat.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the levels of speaking anxiety among 11th-grade students at SMK Negeri 1 Meranti Kabupaten Asahan. Using a mixed-method approach, the study employs the modified Horwitz Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) to quantify anxiety levels and qualitative analysis to explore the specific types of anxiety and their triggers. This research used probability sampling to select 105 samples from a population of 142 students from 11th grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Meranti for the 2023 – 2024 academic year The findings revealed that (1)) the majority of students had very low anxiety levels (50.50%), moderately low anxiety (19.00%), moderate anxiety (17.10%), moderately high anxiety (9.50%), and high anxiety (3.90%) levels. The study concluded that speaking anxiety is a complex issue shaped by a combination of these internal and external variables.

Abstract

The text emphasizes the significance of enhancing writing skills among EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students through active learning and meaningful engagement, advocating for a student-centered approach that fosters idea development through discussion and writing. It highlights the challenges faced by Grade 11 EFL students at Singapore School Medan, particularly regarding grammar mastery and practice opportunities, revealing that while 62% of students exhibit good writing skills, a notable portion struggles due to limited engagement and reluctance to communicate in English. The study suggests utilizing news media and guided practice to boost motivation and creativity, ultimately calling for more effective teaching strategies to improve writing outcomes. The sample of this study is 15 students. The researchers used purposive sampling to achieve the aim of study. To collect used the Semi-structure interview is a form of Interview. The finding of this research showed that in pre-test, the students got mean score 43,75. In cycle 1, the mean score is 48,6. In cycle 2, the mean score is 60,5 or categorized moderate. In post-test, the mean score is 75,8 categorized good. Topic writing skills in EFL students by providing one learning topic makes students active to construct meaning, text, dialogue, experience, in expressing his idea clearly at SMA Singapore School Medan

Abstract

This research investigated the benefits of joining English speaking club as an extracurricular activity. The study aimed to find out the benefits of joining English club on students' speaking ability. The study used a qualitative research approach, and data was collected using interview. The participants were five eleventh-grade students who had joined the English club, one boy and four girls. The study found that there were 4 benefits gained by joining the English club. They are, The English club was more enjoyable than regular classes, the students received moral and emotional support to became confident, they got the same turn to speak, and they got new vocabulary. In short, the English club was a place for students to improve their English speaking skills and also a place for those who were interested to join many English competitions.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the paralinguistic aspects of commercial advertising through television media. How important is the paralinguistic aspect in an advertisement, resulting in the conclusion that paralinguistics does not only affect verbal and direct communication, but also communication in the media. In this study, the research is advertising through television media. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method. The source used in this research is the narrative of the conversation in the advertisement. The three commercial advertisements that will be examined in paralinguistic aspects are “Keanu's version of Pentene, Kenyataan yang menyegarkan’s version of Sprites, Indomie Goreng Rica-rica” The success of delivering messages through the media is the main goal of advertising, the communicator aspect in conveying messages is an important sensor in it. Verbal or paralinguistic communication messages are references so that a communicator can look attractive in building perceptions of the advertising image that will be displayed.

Abstract

This research aims to determine whether there is a significant influence of the use of digital systems on the speaking skills of students in ten grade Senior High School. This research is a quantitative with anexperimental design. It was conducted in ten grade SMK NEGERI 1 BERINGIN under the academic year 2020/2021. The total population was 168 students and researchers took 20 students for the experimental class and 20 students for the control class which meant 40 students as a total sample. In collecting data, researchers used speaking test. Tests are pre-tests given before treatment and post tests given after treatment. Then, the data obtained were analyzed using t-test at SPSS 20 with a significance level of 5% (0.05). Furthermore, the t-test resultsshowed that t-test (3.327) was higher than t-table at a significance level of 5% (0.05) with a degree of freedom 38 being 2.024. Therefore, the results of t-test>t-table result that H0 (null hypothesis) is rejected and Ha (alternative hypothesis) is accepted.Thus, the Hello English application has a significant influence on students' speaking skills in ten grade SMK NEGERI 1 BERINGIN.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the language attitudes of students in the English Education Department at UMN Alwashliyah. Language attitude is an important factor in determining how students perceive and interact with the English language, which influences their learning experience and proficiency. The research was conducted using a qualitative-method approach, combining surveys and interviews with a sample of students from the department. The findings reveal that students have generally positive attitudes toward learning English, viewing it as essential for academic success and future career opportunities. However, there are also mixed feelings towards the use of English in social contexts, with some students expressing concerns about the pressure to speak fluently. The study highlights the importance of understanding language attitudes in shaping educational practices and suggests recommendations for enhancing English language teaching strategies in the department.

Abstract

Speaking the target language is often defined by both EFL students and teachers as the principle objective of language learning. However, all foreign language teachers recognise that, this is in fact, one of the most difficult skill to develop, giving that the aim of speaking is hindered by many factors resulting in most being reticent and unforthcoming when asked to speak the target language. Thus, EFL students may have difficulty in speaking fluent and accurate English. The present research took place at Djillali Liabes University of Sidi Bel Abbes (Algeria), exactly in English as a foreign language oral classes. It aims at analysing learners' attitudes in the EFL oral expression and comprehension classroom as well as to detect whether the focus on accuracy could hinder the practice of oral communication as well as cause problems in learning..Thus, both classroom observations and an interview were chosen as tools for data collection. Since the aim of language learning is to enhance EFL learners’ oral proficiency, this paper aims to highlight the value of both fluency and accuracy in the EFL oral expression classroom, for the latter to be reached.
