Abstract

Centrifugal pumps at the PPSDM Migas Refinery play a crucial role in the continuous fluid transfer process. However, these components are prone to various problems, such as misalignment, bearing wear, and imbalance, which can cause serious damage to production downtime. This research aims to analyze the condition of the P100/3 centrifugal pump with a vibration data-based monitoring method. Measurements were taken using a vibration meter with reference to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 10816-3 standard on machine classification. Vibration data was collected from three main axes (axial, horizontal, and overhang) for four days to obtain the vibration pattern overhang as well as an indication of potential failures. The measurement results showed that at Non-Drive End (NDE) point 1, the average vibration reached 7.15 mm/s, which is included in zone D (danger), so immediate maintenance is required. Meanwhile, the Drive End (DE) 2, DE 3, and NDE 4 points are in zone B, which is still in the safe category, but still requires regular monitoring. In addition, temperature analysis showed an increase in motor and pump temperatures from August 12 to 16, which although still within reasonable limits, could potentially lead to overheating if not anticipated. Based on these findings, it is concluded that pump P100/3 requires immediate maintenance at point NDE 1, while pump P100/1 is still in a safe condition. Continued maintenance and monitoring recommendations are provided to prevent further potential damage and ensure optimal operational sustainability of the refinery

Abstract

Fire on a tanker can cause financial, human, and environmental losses if it is not handled effectively. This research aimed to find out the actions of the captain when conducting an evacuation, to determine the factors inhibiting the evacuation process, and to analyze the effectiveness of the fire evacuation process on MT. Elisabet Satu. This research used qualitative method combined with the root cause analysis (RCA) and fishbone diagram. This research used observation, interviews, documentation, and literature studies to collect the data. The object of this research was the fire evacuation process on MT. Elisabet Satu. The results of this research indicated that the captain had followed the evacuation procedures when conducting the fire evacuation on MT. Elisabet Satu. In addition, there were five main factors that inhibited the evacuation process when a fire occured on MT. Elisabet Satu. However, even though the evacuation procedures had been carried out properly, the evacuation process could not be fully declared effective based on the Risk-Based Evaluation in ISM Code.

Abstract

The Reverse Osmosis Plant (RO) is a critical system for supplying freshwater on board ships to meet accommodation and operational needs. This study aims to identify the causes of reduced freshwater production in the RO Plant aboard the MT. Golden Splendor and to propose optimization strategies. A qualitative approach was employed through direct observation, interviews with engineering officers, and analysis of logbook data collected during a 12-month sea training period. The findings indicate that the main causes of inefficiency include clogged filters and membranes, leakage in the ejector pump, and inadequate routine maintenance. These issues led to a decline in freshwater production from 1000 liters/hour to 700 liters/hour. After corrective measures such as filter replacement, membrane cleaning, and pump repairs were implemented, production increased back to 1000 liters/hour. The results highlight the importance of scheduled maintenance and system monitoring to ensure optimal RO performance. The study recommends strict adherence to maintenance procedures and enhanced system supervision to improve efficiency and ensure the sustainability of freshwater production on board.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the influence of entrepreneurial spirit and selling practices on the business motivation of maritime students. The background of this study is based on the low motivation of students to become entrepreneurs due to limited practical experience and the lack of internalization of entrepreneurial values in maritime education. The study used a quantitative approach, with 65 students in the maritime education study program in Semarang City as respondents. Data collection was conducted using a closed-ended questionnaire, and data analysis used simple and multiple linear regression with the help of SPSS version 26. The results showed that entrepreneurial spirit significantly influenced selling practices (R² = 84.2%) and business motivation (R² = 84.2%). Furthermore, selling practices also significantly influenced business motivation (R² = 65.7%). Multiple regression showed that entrepreneurial spirit (β = 0.640) and selling practices (β = 0.101) simultaneously contributed to business motivation with a strong correlation (R = 0.747). These findings emphasize the importance of an action-based learning approach in entrepreneurship education to improve the entrepreneurial readiness and spirit of maritime students.

Abstract

Air conditioning (AC) systems play a crucial role in maintaining thermal comfort within ship accommodation spaces, especially during operations in tropical climates. However, the use of refrigerants such as R32 raises environmental concerns due to its relatively high Global Warming Potential (GWP). This study aims to analyze the impact of retrofitting 40% by mass of R290 into a 1-HP split AC system originally designed for R32, focusing on the resulting compression ratio and cooling performance. The experimental method involved varying the inlet air temperatures to the evaporator (23°C, 25°C, and 27°C) and condenser (30°C and 35°C). Suction and discharge pressures of the compressor were measured to calculate the compression ratio. The results showed that R32 yielded the highest compression ratio of 3.09 and the lowest at 2.87, while R290 produced a maximum of 2.86 and a minimum of 2.60. These differences reflect the influence of each refrigerant’s thermodynamic properties on compressor operation. R290 demonstrates potential as an environmentally friendly alternative for marine air conditioning systems, although technical adjustments are required to maintain optimal system performance.
