Abstract

The diesel engine is an internal combustion engine that produces heat energy and motion energy. Overheating the engine can cause damage. To prevent excessive heat in a diesel engine, cooling is needed, the component that acts as a coolant is a fresh water cooler. normal temperature condition of fresh water cooler is 65ᵒC. The purpose of this study was to find out how maintenance actions are carried out on the fresh water cooler of the main driving diesel engine cooling system if overheating occurs. The research method used in this research is descriptive research, namely research that aims to describe and describe the object under study. Observation of temperature on the control panel of the main engine from the observation of temperature control there was an increase in temperature of 85ᵒC and an alarm sounded so that a fresh water cooler was checked and repaired. This is thought to be caused by the presence of dirt and corrosion in the cooling holes. And at that time, the pressure of the sea water cooling pump decreased from 3.0 kg/cm2 to 2.0 kg/cm2. The research results obtained a blockage in the sea water filter section so it needs to be cleaned and checked so that the incident does not happen again. The conclusion of this research is that the fresh water cooler maintenance on the ship has been going well, carried out according to the machine instructions work instructions, according to schedule. The results of the maintenance are that the engine temperature returns as expected.

Abstract

Fresh onboard water is required to fulfill the crew's living needs and support the ship's operations. The need for fresh water for the crew and operational support of the boat is fulfilled with fresh water purchased from the land. Water purchases can be made when the ship is in port, either when the ship is at the dock or when the boat is anchored. Additional fresh water supply can be obtained continuously while the ship is sailing. Seawater desalination is a solution to produce fresh water to fulfill the new water needs. Desalination using a freshwater generator (FWG) involves evaporation and condensation processes affected by vacuum and operating temperature. This study was conducted to determine the effect of changes in pressure and temperature parameters on the production capacity of the freshwater generator. The study was conducted using a case study method through observation, and experimentation on board MT.PM REGENT. The vacuum in the FWG chamber was varied based on the suction of the vacuum ejector. Hot water temperature as a heater in the evaporator is taken from the cooling jacket of the main engine. The result of the pump ejector pressure variation greatly affects the vacuum level of the distillation chamber At pump ejector pressures between 8 – 16 Bar, the vacuum rate can reach 99 – 100% after the pump is operated At pressures of 2 and 4 Bar, the vacuum level drops dramatically, reaching only 50 and 80 %, respectively. The lowest production of FWG when operated with 80% vacuum with a heating temperature of 75 OC is 2767 liters/day. In FWG operation with a maximum vacuum of 100% and a heating temperature of 85 OC, it is able to produce the most fresh water around 6879 liters/day. Based on the changes in parameters, it can be concluded that a decrease in the level of vacuum and heater temperature reduces the production of fresh water from the Fresh Water Generator.

Abstract

One of the implementations of project-based learning for electronics courses at the Indonesian State Maritime Polytechnic campus is carried out by making ship steering equipment based on one of the learning outcomes in electronics courses for the Engineering department, namely mastering the basics of electricity, electronics, hydraulics, and pneumatics related to ship control systems. Learning with this method can be applied online and offline, where the government’s budget efficiency is to reduce equipment and maintenance spending. Proteus software, which is open-source software that can be downloaded for free, is used to reduce the cost of purchasing electronic components. In addition, cadets do not need to buy components to minimize the cost of purchasing electronic components. Learning begins with the theory of ship steering simulation by demonstrating ship steering consisting of potentiometer components, Arduino, and connected to a computer via USB serial to view the data on the computer, followed by students practicing doing the project by starting by downloading and installing Proteus software, downloading and installing Arduino IDE software then continuing to create a potentiometer circuit, Arduino and serial monitor using Proteus software. In doing this project, students must learn independently by looking for guides and literature that can be searched on the internet or YouTube. This ship steering simulation model or prop is the result of DAPTV research, which explains ship steering simulation to students in the Engineering department in electronics courses at a low cost.

Abstract

The Reverse Osmosis Plant (RO) is a critical system for supplying freshwater on board ships to meet accommodation and operational needs. This study aims to identify the causes of reduced freshwater production in the RO Plant aboard the MT. Golden Splendor and to propose optimization strategies. A qualitative approach was employed through direct observation, interviews with engineering officers, and analysis of logbook data collected during a 12-month sea training period. The findings indicate that the main causes of inefficiency include clogged filters and membranes, leakage in the ejector pump, and inadequate routine maintenance. These issues led to a decline in freshwater production from 1000 liters/hour to 700 liters/hour. After corrective measures such as filter replacement, membrane cleaning, and pump repairs were implemented, production increased back to 1000 liters/hour. The results highlight the importance of scheduled maintenance and system monitoring to ensure optimal RO performance. The study recommends strict adherence to maintenance procedures and enhanced system supervision to improve efficiency and ensure the sustainability of freshwater production on board.

Abstract

The research method used was a qualitative experiment, starting with taking broken piston rings No. 2 and 3, cutting the piston rings and testing them with hardness tests and composition tests carried out at the Indonesian State Maritime Polytechnic and Undip Central Java Integrated Lab. From the results of this research, it can be concluded that the used broken ring number 3 has the highest hardness of 140.26 HB and the used ring number 2 is 131.50 HB, so it can be concluded that the piston ring that has been used and exposed to high heat causes an increase in hardness and causes it to break. The composition test results showed that the carbon content of the new ring no. 2 was the highest at 15.30% and that in the used ring no. 2 was 12.08% because the compression ring was in direct contact with the compression chamber or in contact with heat. For the used number 3 piston ring, the carbon content is 10.43 and the new one is 11.02 because it is positioned below the compression ring and is not in direct contact with heat. for the used ring no.2, the Silicon (Si) content is low, namely 2.15% compared to the new one, 2.75% because the nature of Silicium is that it is resistant to high temperatures and as a compression ring compared to ring no.3, fracture occurs because there are no Manganese or Phosphate elements. which is wear resistant, strong and elastic. The microstructure of piston ring No. 2 is broken and the new two piston rings are less dense and have rough gaps. The broken piston ring structure of No. 3 and the new one looks a bit gray and has high levels of graphite iron and carbon elements.

Abstract

The paper is The performance of water distribution in buildings is strongly influenced by the relative position of the reservoir and the outlet pipe. This represents an important technology transfer for enhancing building services engineering. This study examines the performance of a hydrophore system under variations in pipe height, water level, and tank pressure. Experiments were conducted using pipe heights of 1, 2, and 3 meters; water levels of ¼, ½, and ¾ of the tank capacity; and tank pressures of 1, 2, and 3 bar. Pressure adjustments were made by adding or releasing compressed air. System performance was evaluated by measuring the mass flow rate through one, two, and three outlet pipes operated individually and simultaneously. The highest mass flow rate for a single outlet pipe was achieved at a ½ water level and 3 bar pressure, yielding 67.87 kg/min through outlet pipe 2. For two outlet pipes, the maximum values were obtained at a ¼ water level and 3 bar, producing 72.75 and 73.25 kg/min. With all three outlets open, the highest flow rate reached 79.69 kg/min at a ½ water level and 3 bar. Overall, water level, tank pressure, pipe height, and the number of open outlets significantly affect distribution performance and must be considered in system design for multi-level buildings
