Abstract

Collaboration and communication skills were essential as basic skills in the 21st century. This research described the forms of students’ collaboration skills in terms of the teamwork aspect, and the forms of students’ communication skills in terms of the verbal communication aspect, that emerge in Indonesian Language learning through RADEC. A qualitative approach with a case study type was applied in this study. The subjects were 3rd-grade students in one of the elementary schools in Bandung city. Data collection was carried out through observation, field notes, and interviews. Data was analyzed through data collection, data reduction, and conclusion. The results of this study show that 1) the form of student collaboration skills are through contributing to completing group assignments, help each other when having difficulties, appreciating the work of their friend in the group, and exchanging ideas and opinions, and 2) the form of student communication skills are being able to present the results of group discussions, being active argue and asking a question, using an appropriate language, respect each other’s opinions, brave and confident when speaking in front of the class. Collaboration in the discussion stage has yet to be visible; the reasons are that the students have yet to conclude the different opinions or answers even though the essence is the same, one person still dominates the discussion, and some students need to work on pre-learning questions. This research implied that Indonesian Language learning need to be designed to actively involved students to develop collaboration and communication skills by integrating innovative learning model such as RADEC.

Abstract

Character education is the most important factor in shaping good character, especially in primary schools, which can include character values, manners, attitudes, and morals so that students can distinguish good and bad behaviour. Formal education is currently only focused on developing cognitive aspects so the affective aspects of students have not been applied thoroughly in schools. This study aims to analyse the challenges of implementing character education in primary schools. The method used was a systematic literature review (SLR), collecting articles related to problems and solutions in character education in primary schools. Data collected from as many as 181 articles and filtered and obtained into 10 articles through sinta accredited journals. Articles in this study were traced through the Google Scholar database from 2018-2023. Based on the research some students still have problems with poor character such as dishonesty during tests, not being disciplined to follow the rules at school, and not being independent in doing assignments. The implementation of character education must be instilled since elementary school and done well through the example of a teacher and routinely carried out by the school so that students can get used to actions that will become commendable characters that will have an effect in the future. Character cultivation can also be carried out by teachers by slipping character values through the integration of subjects to be taught.

Abstract

The cultivation of local culture and wisdom is important as an effort to minimize the impact of globalization on elementary school students. Sumanget Ka-Sumedang is one of the cultural heritages in the form of ideas or concepts from the Sumedang regency. This research would to analyze the philosophical value of Sumanget Ka-sumedangan in an effort to instill the character of students in Sumedang Regency. This research was conducted using a qualitative approach with a case study method. The data collection techniques in this study used interview techniques, observation, literature study, and documentation study. This research employs qualitative data analysis techniques through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that out of the 7 schools examined in the study, one school implemented a program oriented towards the philosophical values of Sumanget Ka-Sumedang comprehensively. Other schools carried out activity programs without being based on Sumanget Ka-Sumedang, although there were still aspects of character value development present. The predominant types of activities chosen for implementation were through habituation and school culture. Philosophically, Sumanget Ka-Sumedang portrays the ideal Sumedang community, where individuals possess traits such as optimism, critical thinking, spiritual integrity, discipline, intelligence, politeness, and patience. Despite its longstanding existence, Sumanget Ka-Sumedang remains relevant to the challenges faced by the community today. The implementation of activity programs in educational units oriented to the philosophical values of Sumanget Ka-Sumedangan is the right way to instill the character of students.

Abstract

Reading interest is one of the fundamental skills in language and is a highly effective learning activity for acquiring knowledge and literacy. Reading literacy is an essential skill, particularly for prospective educators; however, many students experience challenges in cultivating a reading habit. This research aims to: (1) describe the reading interest conditions of prospective teacher students at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI), (2) elucidate the supporting and inhibiting factors for prospective teacher students (PTS) at UPI in their reading activities. This study employs a quantitative approach with a survey design. The research subjects are UPI PGSD (Elementary School Teacher Education) students. Data collection methods include questionnaires, surveys, and interviews. Data analysis involves descriptive analysis, frequency distribution, and percentage calculation. The findings reveal that: (1) the overall reading interest of PTS is categorized as low, (2) students' activities on campus before class hours mainly involve waiting and chatting with friends; only a small portion of students utilize their free time to read books or visit the library. (3) PTS' preferred books are novels and fiction, while scientific texts are less favored due to unappealing design and layout, (4) the time spent on reading books by PTS is relatively short, with less than 1 hour daily, and some do not allocate any time for reading, except when there are assignments or exams, (5) the major inhibiting factors for PTS in reading are internal, indicated by low reading habits or preferences for other interests over reading.

Abstract

The low awareness and behaviour of environmental care and the increasing cases of environmental damage caused by human behaviour are the background of the research. Environmental problems caused by humans continue to occur and increase every year, ranging from the destruction of ecosystems to the emergence of waste that damages the environment. Environmental care behaviour is an important part that must be owned by every human being on earth, because this is related to the survival of every creature, both plants, animals, and other humans. This study aims to determine the effect of students' participation in environmental education programmes on pro environmental behaviour. This research is a type of quantitative research with survey method. Data collection techniques were obtained by means of observation and questionnaires. The research subjects were 5th grade elementary school students totalling 45 people. Data analysis was conducted using paired sample t test to measure the influence between variables and linear regression analysis to measure the amount of influence given. The results showed that there was a positive influence of student participation on pro environmental behaviour with sig. 0.004 < 0.005, with rcount = 0.419 > rtable = 0.294 so that it can be interpreted that the higher the participation of students in the environment, the better the environmental care behaviour, where R2 = 0.175 shows the influence of student participation with pro environmental behavior by 17%, while 83% is influenced by other factors. From these results, it shows that students' participation in environmental education programs plays an important role in supporting environmental care behaviour that leads to attitudes to protect the environment. The implication of the research is as a database and evaluation of education, especially in the environmental care behaviour of elementary school students.

Abstract

Problem solving difficulty is one of the difficulties experienced by students when choosing the correct strategy to obtain an answer. In general, problem solving problems are contextual in nature that are based on student reality. The difficulty of solving contextual problems, especially in flat building material, causes math subjects to be unpopular with students. In solving contextual problem solving problems, the ability of each student will be different which can be seen from gender differences, namely men and women. The goal of this study is to characterize the disparities in fifth-grade students at Gondang 1 State Elementary School as well as the challenges that male and female students face when attempting to solve contextual problems with flat shapes. Descriptive qualitative research is employed in this kind of study. Teachers and students in the fifth grade served as the research subjects. Semi-structured interviews, documentation, and observation were the methods of data collecting that were employed. Technique and source triangulation were employed in data validity methodologies. Data reduction, data visualization, and conclusion drafting are examples of data analysis approaches. The results showed that male students had difficulty developing a problem solving plan, difficulty counting, especially multiplication and division, difficulty checking or looking back at the results of the work and they were not accustomed to writing conclusions to the problems asked in the problem. Meanwhile, female students have difficulty operating multiplication and division, are less careful in checking back the results of work and are not accustomed to writing conclusions to the problems asked in the problem. The difference in the difficulty of solving contextual problems of flat building material between male and female students lies in the second stage, namely developing a problem-solving plan and the fourth stage, namely checking or looking back.

Abstract

Mathematics is an important subject in elementary school because it is the basis for understanding more complex mathematical concepts in the future. One of them is that students need to study number material in basic mathematical concepts because it is very important to master and understand, for example it can be used in commerce, measurement and technology. However, in the field, elementary school students are still found to have misconceptions about understanding the concept of comparing, ordering or calculating decimal numbers. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. The subjects of this research were 4 class VI students at an elementary school in Banyuresmi sub-district, Garut. Data was collected through observation, interviews, and providing routine practice question sheets. The findings in this research are, 1) Some students have difficulty understanding decimal numbers and ordering them as well as performing addition calculation operations, 2) Some students consider decimal numbers with more digits after the comma as larger numbers, 3) There are also students who make mistakes. Storing numbers after commas can cause errors in calculations. So the alternative solution that can be given is that teachers can identify the source of student misconceptions by providing diagnostic tests, using more interactive learning methods, providing case examples from everyday life, providing more and varied exercises, providing continuous feedback. and be constructive towards student answers, and facilitate discussions that focus on problem solving. This will help students understand the concept of decimal numbers more effectively and efficiently.

Abstract

The material of the five senses in humans is one of the materials that often causes errors for students in solving problems. This study aims to a) identify student misconceptions using the Certainty of Response Index (CRI) method of human sensory material in grade IV elementary school students, b) describe the causes of misconceptions. This study used a qualitative descriptive approach. This research was conducted at SD Negeri Srimulyo 2 Sragen, with the subject of the study being grade IV students as many as 15 children. The data collection techniques used are tests, interviews and documentation. The research instrument used is 15 questions accompanied by CRI that has been tested for validity and reliability. The wetness test in this study used a triangulation method, namely by comparing test results with interview results. The data was analyzed by referring to CRI categorization which was used to measure the level of confidence of learners about the answers they gave, so as to distinguish learners who guessed, understood concepts, did not understand concepts, and misconceptions. The results showed that a) as many as 41.93% or there were 6 students experiencing misconceptions. The highest misconception of this study is on the indicators of the function of the five senses of humans, while the lowest misconception is on indicators of understanding and types of five senses., b) there are several factors that cause misconceptions, namely the difficulty of students in memorizing the material, the lack of interest in learning students, and inappropriate teacher teaching methods. Thus, there is a need for innovation and evaluation for and teachers to improve the use of learning methods and media.
