Abstract

The research aims to explore into defense mechanism used by Locke Lamora, the protagonist of Scott Lynch’s The Lies of Locke Lamora, using a psychoanalytic approach. The research, which is based on Anna Freud’s defense mechanism theory, try to understand how Locke’s psychological defense contributes to his complex identity. The qualitative method of close reading is used on chosen dialogues and narrative section, with a focus on recurring patterns of humor, rationalization, sublimation, denial, projection, and reaction formation. The findings show that Locke has developed defenses as adaptive mechanism that protect him against feelings of guilt, loss, and dread hence his strength, resilience and vulnerability. His tendency to rationalize crimes and injustice, covering up pain with humor, and transform impulse into something artistic demonstrates the ego’s constant effort to maintain order in corrupt place. The research contributes to literary psychology by demonstrating how defense mechanisms function not just as psychological strategies but also as narrative devices, maintaining Locke’s moral ambiguity which defines his character. Abstract

This Mitch Albom’s novel For One More Day explores Chick Benetto’s struggle with family trauma and identity crisis. This study aims to reveal how trauma, parental influence, and identity crises shape Chick’s psychological development via Lacanian psychoanalysis. Using qualitative textual analysis, we apply Lacan’s three orders – the Imaginary, Symbolic Order, and the Real – to trace Chick’s evolution. At the Mirror Stage, Chick forms an “Ideal-I” reflecting imagined wholeness. Disruptions in the Symbolic (a divorced father and broken home) shatter this ego, fueling Chick’s inferiority and identity crisis. Encountering the unsymbolizable Real (his father’s abuse, his mother’s loss) forces Chick to confront repressed trauma. Findings reveal how trauma and parental influence shape Chick’s narrative arc. We conclude that Lacanian analysis illuminates Chick’s journey from misrecognition to self-reconciliation, highlighting identity and resilience in the novel. Abstract

This study aims to examine the discourse structure of U.S. President Donald Trump’s speech on June 21, 2025, using a structural discourse analysis approach. The approach investigates the text through three main levels: macrostructure, microstructure, and superstructure along with interpretative analysis focusing on tone, emotion, and persuasive strategies. The data were obtained from the official transcript of Trump’s “Address to the American People” published by the Miller Center. The study applies a descriptive qualitative method grounded in van Dijk’s, Halliday and Hasan’s, and Barthes’ frameworks. Findings reveal that the speech demonstrates coherence between global meaning (macrostructure) and its linguistic and organizational structures. Interpretatively, the speech exhibits a persuasive tone, patriotic emotion, and rhetorical strategies that combine ethos, pathos, and logos to construct political and moral legitimacy. This study affirms that structural discourse analysis can effectively uncover meaning dynamics and power relations in modern political communication. Abstract

This study aims to explain how inflection, derivation, and compounding function as manifestations of children’s morphological awareness in English word formation within virtual environments. Online games such as Roblox, Minecraft, and Stumble Guys provide a natural space where children not only play but also experiment with linguistic forms. In this context, the development of morphological awareness is understood as children’s ability to consciously recognize, understand, and use word structures—from simple inflectional forms to complex morphological constructions. The research employed morphological content analysis within a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were obtained from transcripts of online game interactions among Indonesian children aged 7–10, which were recorded and categorized according to word-formation processes (inflection, derivation, and compounding). The analysis traced the development of children’s morphological awareness from the recognition stage (form identification) to the use stage (productive application). The findings indicate that children’s morphological awareness develops gradually. The initial stage is marked by recognition of inflectional forms such as loading, winning, and played, often produced through imitation of the game interface. At the intermediate stage, children exhibit derivative understanding through forms like legendary, respawned, and upgrading, reflecting a growing awareness of morphemic function. The advanced stage shows compositional creativity with forms such as bedwars, auto-clicker, and block dash, demonstrating an ability to construct new meanings creatively. These results confirm that the virtual world serves as a natural linguistic laboratory, facilitating the development of children’s morphological awareness from simple to complex forms through repeated and meaningful digital play experiences. Abstract

This study is aims to analyze and identify the forms of translation shifts in the lyrics of the songs To the Bone and One Only by Pamungkas, translated from English to Indonesian. The method employed is qualitative descriptive with a text analysis approach. The translation were conducted by the researcher and analys using Catford’s (1965) theory of translation shifts, which included level shifts and category shifts, namely structure shift, class shift, unit shift, and intra-sistem shift. The analysis result indicates that all five types of shifts were found in both of songs lyrics. In the translation process, these shift employed to ensure the original meaning, adjust to the natural structure of the target language, preserve emotional elements, and maintain the art quality of the song lyrics. The findings of analysis emphasize that the application of shifts in translation is an important strategies for effectively transferring message across languages and cultures, particularly in the context of poetic and expressive the song lyrics. Abstract

This study was conducted to examine the ecranisation process of Lily Brooks-Dalton's novel Good Morning, Midnight into the film The Midnight Sky (2020). The analysis views the narrative changes and their impact on thematic meaning. To be specific, the purpose of this study is to identify the various forms of reduction, addition, and change in the adaptation, as well as to analyze the way these changes affect the representation of characters, redemption, and parenting relationships constructed in both mediums. This study employed qualitative method, and used the Eneste's concept of adaptation. The results have shown that the film adaptation is found to have an impact on the independence of the female characters, partly due to the removal of internal narration and detailed background information. As a result, the theme of redemption becomes less explicit, and the simplification of intergenerational relationships reduces the importance of parental identity in the overall meaning of the story. It can be concluded that the ecranisation process reveals the way adapting a literary work into film can redirect the thematic priorities and reshape the depth through which meaning is conveyed. Abstract

This study analyzes the use of illocutionary acts in the dialogues of James Sunderland and Angela Orosco in Silent Hill 2 Remake (2024). Drawing on Speech Act Theory, as proposed by Austin (1962) and classified by Searle (1979), this research aims to identify the types of illocutionary acts and to examine how dominant acts represent each character. Using a descriptive qualitative method with qualitative content analysis, the data consist of dialogues from five encounter scenes collected through gameplay recording and transcription. The findings reveal four illocutionary acts: representatives, directives, expressives, and commissives, while declaratives are absent. James’s dialogue is dominated by representative acts (42.6%), followed by directive (29.4%), expressive (22.1%), and commissive (5.9%) acts, portraying him as reflective and psychologically conflicted in his attempts to rationalize his situation. In contrast, Angela’s dialogue is strongly dominated by representative acts (53.0%), followed by directive (26.5%), expressive (16.9%), and commissive (3.6%) acts, portraying her as traumatized and defensive through her assertions of trauma-related beliefs and self-blame. Future research may employ a psycho-pragmatic approach to deepen character analysis. Keywords: Illocutionary Acts, Speech Acts, Video Game, Video Game Dialogue, Pragmatics

Abstract

This study investigates the deployment of conceptual metaphors within the lyrical framework of “Transform by Daniel Caesar, employing Lakoff and Johnson’s Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) as its analytical foundation. Through descriptive qualitative methodology, five conceptual metaphors were systematically identified and interpreted, encompassing structural metaphors that map the self onto predatory animals, an ontological metaphor elevating the speaker to divine status, a nature-based metaphor attributing floral imagery to the beloved, and a soteriological metaphor positioning the beloved as a redemptive figure. The findings demonstrate that these metaphors operate as an interconnected cognitive system rather isolated linguistic units, collectively constructing a progressive existential narrative of self-transformation. Abstract

This study aims to identify the Newmark translation method applied to the translation of the song lyrics “Risk It All” by Bruno Mars. The purpose of this identification is to determine whether the translator emphasizes or leans toward the source language (SL) or the target language (TL). The method used for this study is a descriptive qualitative approach, as it is considered appropriate for the study focus based on the characteristics, phenomena observed, and selected data. By comparing 20 lines of source language (English) and the target language (Indonesian) lyrics using Newmark’s theory, the results indicate four translation methods were employed: literal (35%), communicative (30%), free (30%), and lastly faithful (5%). Based on these percentages, it can be concluded that the translator tends to preserve the text structure of the English language while adapting aspects to ensure naturalness that is easily understood by the Indonesian as the target audience. Accuracy of meaning and aesthetic considerations regarding the song lyrics are taken into account to achieve an equivalent emotional impact for the listeners. Thus, this study is titled ‘Newmark’s Translation Methods in the Indonesian Translation of “Risk It All” by Bruno mars’. Keywords: Translation Methods, Newmark, Song Lyrics, Bruno Mars
