Abstract

William Blake's Songs of Innocence and of Experience is an important work in English Romantic poetry, known for its use of symbolism and allegory. This study looks at how Blake uses symbols and allegories to show the differences between innocence and experience and how these themes criticize the society and religion of 18th-century England. The goal of this research is to identify important symbols and allegories in Blake's poems and explain their meanings. Using close reading of selected poems like The Lamb, The Tyger, and London, the study examines how these symbols work. The analysis also includes insights from other studies, such as Juanda's work on understanding hidden meanings in modern media (Putri & Juanda, 2021). The findings show that Blake’s symbols, such as the contrast between innocence and experience or nature and industrialization, reflect Romantic ideals and criticize power structures in society. For example, the contrast between The Lamb and The Tyger shows the mix of gentleness and violence in the world. The study concludes that Blake’s use of symbols and allegory adds depth to his poetry, allowing readers to find multiple meanings in his work. This research helps us better understand Blake’s poems and the value of symbolic interpretation in literature. Keywords: William Blake, Symbolism, Allegory

Abstract

This study aims to identify positive politeness strategies used by Henk Rogers as the Tetris movie's main character. The analysis is conducted on Henk's dialogues that contain positive politeness strategies according to Brown and Levinson's theory. This research uses the descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data, while data collection is done through observation. The results found 48 data of positive politeness strategies used by Henk. Of the 15 existing strategies, 13 strategies appeared in Henk's dialogues. The most dominant strategies are Notice, attending to Hearer and Assert or Presuppose Speaker's Knowledge of and Concern for Hearer's Wants, each appearing in seven dialogues. The factors that influence the use of these strategies include power (P) differences, social distance (D), and rank of imposition (R). When dealing with higher-position interlocutors, Henk used more diplomatic and respectful language, especially when meeting for the first time. However, if the relationship is already closer, his language style becomes more casual and informal. Through the analysis, readers can understand how positive politeness strategies are used in business communication, whether in a company, government environment or when interacting with new people. Abstract

As a popular form of mass media, film effectively conveys the realities of society through the interactions between characters within its storyline. This means it can serve as an object of study in language sciences. In pragmatics, every utterance carries a hidden meaning depending on the context, including the action, known as a speech act. Speech acts can also be found in films, such as Twelve Angry Men (1957). This study focuses on the utterances of the film’s main character. The objective is to identify the types and forms of directive speech acts using the pragmatic identity method and the pragmatic competence-in-equalizing technique. The research identified three forms of directive acts: declarative, imperative, and interrogative, with interrogative being the most used. These acts are used for several purpose, including suggestions, questions, requests, commands, prohibitions, and reminds. Keywords: Film, Pragmatics, Directive Speech Acts

Abstract

This research discusses the denotative and connotative meanings found in the film The Truman Show (1998), directed by Peter Weir. The story tells about a man named Truman Burbank who lives in a world that he believes is real, but actually everything around him is a television show created by a production team. This film is full of signs that can be analyzed using semiotic theory. The aim of this study is to analyze the signs in the film based on Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory, especially his idea about two levels of meaning: denotation (the literal meaning) and connotation (the hidden or cultural meaning). This research uses a qualitative method by observing important scenes and objects in the film, such as the ocean, the hidden cameras, the artificial sun, and Truman’s daily routines. The result shows that many of the signs in the film have deeper meanings. For example, the ocean doesn’t only mean water or a barrier, but also represents Truman’s fear and how the media controls him. The hidden cameras show how Truman is always being watched, which can be seen as a sign of surveillance in modern society. These signs help us understand how the film talks about freedom, control, and reality. The Truman Show is a good example of a film that can be analyzed using semiotics. It shows how media can shape reality and control people's lives. Using Barthes’ theory helps us to see the deeper meanings behind simple objects and actions in the film.
